Combustion of lignite - organic solid waste for energy production: quality, modelling, environment

The global economic and social growth during the past century has led to environmental issues that threat the resources that are essential for the survival and further development of humans in the planet. Sustainable development (consumption and production), besides optimum production with minimum consumption concerns the disengagement of economic growth from environmental impact, the increase of the resources’ yield and a more sustainable lifestyle. Until recently, the energy production in Greece and other European countries, was based on carbon combustion. Various discussions have taken place on the choice of transition fuel in the post-coal transition era, with natural gas predominating. The country's energy sector is adversely affected by the price of fuels such as natural gas and oil, which varies according to the current socio-political circumstances. In addition, for self-sufficiency purposes, (e.g. economic development, case of war) the development and utilization of alternative fuels is deemed essential. Biomass fuels could be an alternative option. Therefore, the systematic and multiparametric characterization (taking into account combustion characteristics, emissions and ash) and the objective categorization of various solid organic wastes and / or composite fuels (mixtures) with lignite, is of major interest.Biomass-based fuels come from a variety of different sources (raw materials), have a high energy content, produce less emissions than other conventional fuels and most importantly are carbon neutral fuels. Organic solid waste (e.g. agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, etc.) is a type of biomass. The combustion of organic solid waste but also the co-combustion of organic solid waste with lignite (mixed / composite fuels), in conventional steam power plants, may be a solution for the smoother transition to the post-lignite era and in general to the energy self-sufficiency of Greece.In the framework of this dissertation, samples from various categories of organic solid waste were studied: municipal solid waste, MSW (food waste, green waste, organic waste and paper / cardboard waste), biodegradable (compost-like outputs of municipal solid waste), agricultural wastes (barley straw, almond and walnut shells, sunflower wastes such as husk, seed, stem, disk florets, plate etc., maize wastes such as stalk, husk leaves, stems, cobs etc.) and industrial solid wastes (brewers' spent grain, extracted olive pomace, olive stone, grape marc, peduncle grape) as well as four samples of domestic lignite (Agios Dimitrios, Kardias and Agios Dimitrios, Melitis, Amyntaio). Each organic solid waste was tested / analyzed as a primary fuel but also as an auxiliary, mixed with domestic lignite, in different weight % (30 wt.%, 50 wt.% and 70 wt.%). A total of 94 samples and mixtures of organic solid waste with lignite were analyzed (24 samples of waste / biomass residues, 4 samples of domestic lignite and 66 mixtures of waste with lignite in different % by weight ratios), in terms of combustion characteristics and co-combustion characteristics with domestic lignite, using multiple analytical methods such as calorific value determination, proximate analysis, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, ion chromatography (determination of sulfate ions and chlorine ions), electron microscopy spectroscopy (elemental analysis of ash) and multiple computational methods such as kinetic modelling (determination of activation energy and pre-exponential factor), thermodynamic analysis (determination of enthalpy change, Gibbs free energy and entropy change). The maximum theoretical emissions of CO2, NO and SO2 per unit of produced energy and the empirical chemical formulas of the samples / mixtures were calculated, and the emissions produced by the combustion of samples / mixtures (COx, and NOx) were modeled using the software ANSYS Chemkin Pro. Also, based on sulfur capture reactions, SO2 emissions were modelled to evaluate the possible occurrence of natural desulfurization effect in pure biomass fuels and their mixtures with lignite. Based on this modelling, the maximum theoretical SO2 emissions were corrected. In addition, within the framework of the doctoral dissertation, new innovative solid fuel quality tools were developed and implemented (solid fuel quality indices, ash quality indices and the tool fuel quality label). These tools were developed by taking into account a combination of multiple parameters, in order to enable the objective and easier evaluation of alternative solid fuels, which to date, no specific quality standards have been declared in order to classify and place them on the energy market. As for other established fuels e.g. gasoline, there are objective specifications based on the number of octane, it is self-evident that in the near future and due to the increasing use of biomass, there will be a demand to define and evaluate the specifications of different types of biomass (e.g. municipal solid waste, agricultural biomass residues, mixed / composite solid fuels etc.) as fuels. The tools developed in this dissertation, are a substantial step in this direction. More specifically, the few existing solid fuel quality indices (available in the literature) were studied and a comprehensive innovative fuel quality index (Fuel Quality Index, FQI) was developed by taking into account key parameters (such as calorific value, ash, humidity, chlorine, etc.) and various new ones while innovative ideas proposed through this dissertation: i) New innovative optimal and maximum parameter values were selected (in comparison to the FQI parameters that exist in the literature), ii) All parameters except activation energy and calorific value ,were expressed per unit of produced MJ (taking into account the experimental results of the gross calorific value), iii) Carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) were expressed as environmental emissions (gCO2 / MJ, gΝO / MJ, and gSO2 / MJ), iv) The ratio 1 / GCV was used as a parameter instead of GCV, for compatibility reasons with all other parameters, v) The activation energy was selected as an additional parameter of fuel quality index (taking into account the results of the determination calorific value and the results of kinetic modeling). In addition, the existing quality indices (for ash) of solid fuels (Bed agglomeration index, Rs index, Fouling index, Slag viscosity index, etc.) were studied and calculated for all analyzed samples, while new innovative modified ash quality indices were developed, where in addition to the chemical analysis of fuel ash, additional parameters were included: the ash content and the calorific value of the fuel. In addition, by taking into account the above modified indices, the total Ash Quality Index (tAQI) was developed. Furthermore, an environmental footprint index was developed for the evaluation of the production of solid waste (ash) from the combustion of fuels. With the new innovative FQI (fuel) and tAQI (ash) tools, the solid fuel quality ‘Label’ tool was created and used for each biomass waste / residue biofuel that was studied as well as for every biomass-lignite blend that was studied. In addition, various case studies were examined for the evaluation of the potential coverage of energy demand (energy production) in Greece, in Europe and worldwide, by using the organic solid waste as biofuel, that were analyzed in this dissertation.Among the main results of the present dissertation were that the energy content of the analyzed organic solid waste was found to be much higher than that of lignite, with the waste fuels having almost twice the content of volatile matter, lower total ash content and higher weight loss, higher reaction rates, higher Gibbs free energy values and in most cases lower activation energy. Increasing the proportion of biomass in the mixtures with lignite improved the properties of the composite fuels (compared to the properties of lignite). The nitrogen content of biomass fuels was found to cover a wide range of values with some wastes showing lower values than those of lignite while others exhibited higher values. The chlorine ion content of the waste in some samples was found to be similar to that of lignite and in some other samples much higher. In most samples the main elements of the ash resulting from the burning of the samples were calcium (Ca), silicon (Si), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P) and sodium (Na) while the main elements of lignite ash were Si, Ca, Mg and K. From the modelling of combustion emissions of biofuels and composite fuels (lignite with organic waste) it showed that about 99.8% of the emissions of C-containing species were CO2, and more than 79% of the emitted items containing N were NO emissions. The modelling also showed that 99.9% of the maximum theoretical CO2 / MJ emissions were emitted, while only 5 to 26% of the maximum NO / MJ emissions emitted. The SO2 emissions of combustion modelling was held by taking into account synergy phenomena (capture of S to ash, reaction with Ca and Mg of the fuel) showed that increased sulfur content is not necessarily translated into increased SOx emissions. Verification of NOx emissions was performed using real data of Agios Dimitrios steam power plant, of the year 2018, concluding that only 1.98% of the maximum NO2 emissions had been emitted. In many analyzed wastes, through modelling, was found that they show reduced SOx emissions compared to the maximum possible ones. Verification of sulfur capture in the ash was carried out by taking into account real data of the annual report of Agios Dimitrios steam power plant, for the year 2018, where the maximum theoretical SO2 emissions were calculated and compared with the actual SO2 emissions of the station, concluding that only 4.17% of the maximum SO2 emissions was emitted as natural desulphurisation (binding of S) by Ca and Mg presence in domestic lignite resulted in negligible sulfur emissions during the study year. Most biofuels and most composite fuels (lignite - biomass) showed a much lower value in the environmental footprint index (in terms of solid waste production) than the corresponding value of lignite. In mixed fuels, the increase in the proportion of waste in the mixture, led to a decrease in the value of the environmental footprint index and an increase in the combustion efficiency index in relation to the corresponding values of domestic lignite. More intense synergy phenomena related to the kinetics of co-combustion, in the stage after the removal of moisture, but also before the end of co-combustion, appeared in the mixtures of the categories of agricultural waste and industrial solid waste. From the case studies regarding the potential covering of the energy demand (energy production) from the combustion of the analyzed waste (biomass residues) it was revealed that a large part of the energy demand can be covered by the combustion of the samples of the agricultural waste category while the combustion of industrial solid waste can result in very small covering of energy requirements (e.g. meeting local energy industry requirements) both short-term and long-term (taking into account forecasts for future energy requirements, future waste generation, etc.). This dissertation provides answers to questions concerning various qualitative and environmental characteristics of a very wide variety of biomass waste for potential use as fuels either as primary fuels or in mixtures with lignite in the context of a gradual transition to the post-lignite era and generally for the energy on dependency of every country. Furthermore, not only the possibility of using compost-like outputs of municipal solid waste as a fuel (due to other potential uses, e.g. fertilizer) limited scientific articles exist in the literature, but also the seasonal variation of quality characteristics was examined. Careful selection and mixing of biomass waste and / or lignite can lead to the creation of new mixed / composite fuels (eg biomass-lignite, biomass-biomass with or without additives, etc.) with specific (desirable) quality characteristics. Solid biofuels may could cover a significant part of the energy required for the energy autonomy of the country. In the present dissertation various case studies have been developed on the possibility of cover energy demand (energy production) using biomass residues taking into account multiple parameters (biomass/waste production, waste utilization, primary energy production, future forecasts, results of this dissertation, etc.) concluding that some of the biomass/wastes can cover a significant part of the energy demand and others can cover only a small part of the energy demand (they can cover only local needs). The Fuel Quality Index (FQI) tool developed in this dissertation is a useful and innovative solid fuel rating tool that takes into account multiple parameters that were not taken into account in the existing indices in the literature. The novel modified ash indices can assist in characterizing a fuel in relation to the long-term tendency for slagging whilst the existing ash quality indices related to instantaneously trend for slagging/fouling. The novel modified ash indices and the total ash quality index (tAQI) can assist in characterizing a fuel in relation to the long-term tendency for slagging. The application / use of the proposed tool 'Fuel Quality Label' (FQL) which does not exist in the current market, can solve the problem of evaluation and classification of new alternative solid fuels (waste / biomass residues, composite / mixed fuels, etc.), so that these fuels have 'identity' quality, to be more easily accepted by consumers, and can be marketed as fuels of specific quality standards.Η παγκόσμια οικονομική και κοινωνική πρόοδος του προηγούμενου αιώνα, οδήγησε σε περιβαλλοντική υποβάθμιση η οποία έθεσε σε κίνδυνο τους ίδιους τους πόρους από τους οποίους εξαρτάται η μελλοντική ανάπτυξη και η επιβίωση του ανθρώπου στον πλανήτη. Η βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη (κατανάλωση και παραγωγή) εκτός της βέλτιστης παραγωγής με την ελάχιστη κατανάλωση, αφορά στην αποσύνδεση της οικονομικής ανάπτυξης από την υποβάθμιση του περιβάλλοντος, την αύξηση της αποδοτικότητας των πόρων και την προώθηση ενός πιο βιώσιμου τρόπου ζωής. Έως σήμερα, η παραγωγή ενέργειας στην Ελλάδα, αλλά και σε πολλές χώρες της Ευρώπης, βασιζόταν κυρίως στην καύση του άνθρακα. Διάφορες συζητήσεις έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί σχετικά με την επιλογή του καυσίμου μετάβασης της μεταλιγνιτικής εποχής, με το φυσικό αέριο να κυριαρχεί. Ο ενεργειακός τομέας της χώρας επηρεάζεται δυσμενώς από την τιμή των καυσίμων όπως φυσικό αέριο και πετρέλαιο, η οποία μεταβάλλεται σύμφωνα με τις εκάστοτε κοινωνικοπολιτικές συγκυρίες. Για την ενεργειακή αυτονομία της χώρας (πχ. οικονομική ανάπτυξη, περίπτωση πολέμου), αποτελεί άμεση επιτακτική ανάγκη η εύρεση εναλλακτικών καυσίμων. Τα καύσιμα βιομάζας θα μπορούσαν να αποτελέσουν μια εναλλακτική επιλογή. Ως εκ τούτων, ο συστηματικός και πολυπαραμετρικός χαρακτηρισμός (λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τόσο τα χαρακτηριστικά καύσης, όσο τις εκπομπές και την τέφρα) και η αντικειμενική κατηγοριοποίηση διαφόρων στερεών οργανικών αποβλήτων ή/και σύνθετων καυσίμων (μιγμάτων) τους με λιγνίτη, αποτελεί αντικείμενο μείζονος ενδιαφέροντος. Τα καύσιμα βιομάζας προέρχονται από πληθώρα διαφόρων πηγών (α’ υλών), διαθέτουν υψηλό ενεργειακό περιεχόμενο, παράγουν λιγότερες εκπομπές από άλλα συμβατικά καύσιμα και κυρίως αποτελούν καύσιμα με ουδέτερο αποτύπωμα άνθρακα (carbon neutral). Τα οργανικά στερεά απόβλητα (πχ. αγροτικά υπολείμματα, αστικά στερεά απόβλητα, κ.α.) αποτελούν τύπο βιομάζας. Η καύση οργανικών στερεών αποβλήτων αλλά και η συν-καύση των οργανικών στερεών αποβλήτων με λιγνίτη (μικτά / σύνθετα καύσιμα), στις συμβατικές ατμοηλεκτρικές εγκαταστάσεις, ίσως αποτελεί λύση τόσο για την ομαλότερη μετάβαση στη μεταλιγνιτική εποχή όσο και γενικότερα στην αυτονομία της χώρας.Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής μελετήθηκαν δείγματα από διάφορες κατηγορίες οργανικών στερεών αποβλήτων: αστικά στερεά απόβλητα, ΑΣΑ (απόβλητα τροφίμων, πράσινα απόβλητα, οργανικά απόβλητα και απόβλητα χαρτιού/χαρτονιού), βιοαποδομήσιμα (κομπόστ των αστικών στερεών απορριμμάτων κάθε εποχής του έτους), αγροτικά απόβλητα (άχυρο κριθαριού, κέλυφος αμυγδάλου και καρυδιού, απόβλητα ηλίανθου όπως φλούδα, κορμός, πιάτο κλπ., απόβλητα αραβοσίτου όπως φύλλα, μίσχος κλπ.) και βιομηχανικά στερεά απόβλητα (εξαντλημένοι σπόροι κριθαριού ζυθοποιίας, ελαιοπυρήνας και πυρηνόξυλο ελαιοτριβείου, στέμφυλά και βόστρυχες στεμφύλων οινοποιείου) καθώς και τέσσερα δείγματα εγχώριου λιγνίτη (Άγιος Δημήτριος, Καρδιάς και Άγιος Δημήτριος, Μελίτης και Αμυνταίου). Κάθε οργανικό απόβλητο εξετάστηκε/αναλύθηκε ως αυτόνομο καύσιμο αλλά και ως βοηθητικό, σε μίξη με τον εγχώριο λιγνίτη, σε διαφορετικές %κ.β. αναλογίες (30 %κ.β., 50 %κ.β. και 70%κ.β.). Συνολικά αναλύθηκαν πειραματικά 94 δείγματα και μίγματα οργανικών στερεών αποβλήτων με λιγνίτη (24 δείγματα αποβλήτων/υπολειμμάτων βιομάζας, 4 δείγματα εγχώριου λιγνίτη και 66 μίγματα αποβλήτων με λιγνίτη σε διάφορες %κ.β. αναλογίες), ως προς τα χαρακτηριστικά καύσης και ως προς τα χαρακτηριστικά συν-καύσης αυτών με τον εγχώριο λιγνίτη, κάνοντας χρήση πολλαπλών αναλυτικών μεθόδων όπως προσδιορισμός θερμογόνου δύναμης, προσεγγιστική ανάλυση, στοιχειακή ανάλυση, θερμοσταθμική ανάλυση, ιοντική χρωματογραφία (προσδιορισμός θειικών ιόντων και ιόντων χλωρίου), ηλεκτρονική μικροσκοπία σάρωσης – φασματοσκοπία ενεργειακής διασποράς (προσδιορισμός κύριων στοιχείων τέφρας) και πολλαπλών υπολογιστικών μεθόδων όπως κινητική μοντελοποίηση (προσδιορισμός ενέργειας ενεργοποίησης και προ-εκθετικού παράγοντα), θερμοδυναμική ανάλυση (προσδιορισμός μεταβολής ενθαλπίας, ελεύθερης ενέργειας Gibbs και μεταβολής εντροπίας). Υπολογίστηκαν οι μέγιστες θεωρητικές εκπομπές CO2, NO και SO2 ανά μονάδα παραγόμενης ενέργειας και οι εμπειρικοί χημικοί τύπου των δειγμάτων/μιγμάτων και πραγματοποιήθηκε η μοντελοποίηση των εκπομπών που παράγονται από την καύση των δειγμάτων/μιγμάτων (COx, και NOx) κάνοντας χρήση του λογισμικού ANSYS Chemkin Pro. Επίσης, με βάση αντιδράσεις δέσμευσης του θείου, πραγματοποιήθηκε μοντελοποίηση των εκπομπών SO2, για την αξιολόγηση της ύπαρξης ενδεχόμενου φαινομένου φυσικής αποθείωσης στα καθαρά καύσιμα βιομάζας και στα μίγματα αυτών με λιγνίτη. Με βάση αυτήν την μοντελοποίηση πραγματοποιήθηκε διόρθωση των μέγιστων θεωρητικών εκπομπών SO2. Επιπλέον, στα πλαίσια της διδακτορικής διατριβής, αναπτύχθηκαν και εφαρμόστηκαν νέα καινοτόμα εργαλεία ποιότητας στερεών καυσίμων (δείκτες ποιότητας στερεών καυσίμων, δείκτες ποιότητας τέφρας καυσίμων και το εργαλείο ετικέτα ποιότητας καυσίμου). Αυτά τα εργαλεία αναπτύχθηκαν λαμβάνοντας υπόψη συνδυασμό πολλαπλών παραμέτρων, έτσι ώστε να καταστεί ικανή η αντικειμενική και ευκολότερη αξιολόγηση εναλλακτικών στερεών καυσίμων, των οποίων έως σήμερα, δεν έχουν δηλωθεί συγκεκριμένες προδιαγραφές ποιότητας με σκοπό την ταξινόμηση και διάθεση αυτών στην αγορά ενέργειας. Όπως π.χ. για τη βενζίνη υπάρχουν αντικειμενικές προδιαγραφές με βάση των αριθμό οκτανίων, είναι αυτονόητο ότι στο προσεχές μέλλον και λόγω της ολοένα αυξανόμενης χρήσης της βιομάζας, θα υπάρξει απαίτηση για τον καθορισμό και αξιολόγηση των προδιαγραφών των διαφόρων τύπων βιομάζας (πχ. αστικά στερεά απόβλητα, αγροτικά υπολείμματα βιομάζας, μικτά/σύνθετα στερεά καύσιμα κλπ.) ως καύσιμα. Τα αναπτυχθέντα στην παρούσα διατριβή εργαλεία αποτελούν ένα πρώτο ουσιαστικό βήμα προς αυτήν την κατεύθυνση. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, μελετήθηκαν οι ελάχιστοι υφιστάμενοι δείκτες ποιότητας στερεών καυσίμου οι οποίοι υπάρχουν στη βιβλιογραφία και αναπτύχθηκε ένας συνολικός καινοτόμος δείκτης ποιότητας καυσίμου (Fuel Quality Index, FQI) λαμβάνοντας υπόψη βασικούς παραμέτρους (όπως θερμογόνος δύναμη, τέφρα, υγρασία, χλώριο κλπ.) και διάφορες νέες καινοτόμες ιδέες οι οποίες προτείνονται μέσω της διατριβής αυτής: i) Επιλέχθηκαν νέες καινοτόμες βέλτιστες και μέγιστες τιμές των παραμέτρων (σε σχέση με τις παραμέτρους των FQΙ που υπάρχουν στη βιβλιογραφία), ii) Όλοι οι παράμετροι, εκτός από την ενέργεια ενεργοποίησης και τη θερμογόνο δύναμη, εκφράστηκαν ανά μονάδα παραγόμενου MJ (λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα της ανώτερης θερμογόνου δύναμης), iii) Ο άνθρακας (C), το άζωτο (N) και το θείο (S) εκφράσθηκαν ως περιβαλλοντικές εκπομπές (gCO2/MJ, gΝO/MJ, και gSO2/MJ), iv) Ο λόγος 1/GCV επιλέχτηκε ως παράμετρος έναντι της GCV, για λόγους συμβατότητας με όλες οι υπόλοιπες παραμέτρους, v) Επιλέχθηκε, η ενέργεια ενεργοποίησης του καυσίμου ως επιπλέον παράγοντας ποιότητας καυσίμου (λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα αποτελέσματα της θερμοσταθμικής μεθόδου και τα αποτελέσματα της κινητικής μοντελοποίησης). Επιπλέον, μελετήθηκαν οι υφιστάμενοι δείκτες ποιότητας (τεφρών) στερεών καυσίμων (Bed agglomeration index, Rs index, Fouling index, Slag viscosity index κλπ.) και υπολογίσθηκαν για όλα τα αναλυθέντα δείγματα ενώ παράλληλα αναπτύχθηκαν νέοι καινοτόμοι τροποποιημένοι δείκτες ποιότητας τεφρών έχοντας ως αναφορά τους υφιστάμενους δείκτες, όπου εκτός από τη χημική ανάλυση των τεφρών των καυσίμων, συμπεριλήφθηκαν επιπλέον παράμετροι: η περιεκτικότητα της τέφρας και η θερμογόνος δύναμη του καυσίμου. Έπειτα, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τους παραπάνω τροποποιημένους δείκτες, αναπτύχθηκε ο συνολικός δείκτης ποιότητας τεφρών των καυσίμων (total Ash Quality Index-tAQI). Επιπλέον, αναπτύχθηκε δείκτης περιβαλλοντικού αποτυπώματος ως προς την παραγωγή στερεών αποβλήτων (τέφρας) από την καύση των καυσίμων. Έχοντας τα νέα καινοτόμα εργαλεία FQI (του καυσίμου) και tAQI (της τέφρας) πραγματοποιήθηκε η δημιουργία του εργαλείου σήμανσης ‘Ετικέτα’ ποιότητας στερεών καυσίμων για κάθε βιοκαύσιμο αποβλήτων/υπολειμμάτων βιομάζας τα οποία μελετήθηκαν και για κάθε σύνθετο καύσιμο βιομάζας-λιγνίτη.
