Quantative analysis of green manure effect on the water use efficiency in its application in corn crop, in the plain of Thessaly

The aim of this research is the study of the combined effect of irrigation and green manure on maize growth and productivity, on the improvement of Water Use Efficiency, on soil improvement and on environmental protection under Thessaly (central Greek) conditions.The originality of the present research is based on the study of intermediate pea cultivation and of the incorporation of its total aerial biomass as green manure prior to the cultivation of maize as main crop. Improvement of soil properties and productivity have also been studied under different levels of irrigation, while the increase of production potential due to increased soil fertility and Water Use Efficiency is clearly apparent.Prior to the installation of the experiments, the main soil physical and chemical properties were determined. The average clay content of 12 collected soil samples was 39.7% (for the surface depth 0-30 cm) and 42% (for the subsurface depth 30-60 cm). Therefore, the texture of the soil samples was clay, without particular fertility problems, with the exception of the low exchangeable potassium content in the subsurface soil layers.The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) values were relatively high, while the organic matter content was satisfactory at the surface (2.9%) and rather low at the subsurface horizons. The pH values ranged from 7.6 to 7.8 in the surface soil and between 7.8 and 8.0 in the subsoil.For the purpose of this thesis, field experiments were conducted in the experimental farm of the University of Thessaly in Velestino (Magnesia-central Greece). The field experiments lasted three years, starting in 2015. In the first experiment, the growth and productivity of maize, sunflower and cotton was studied for two sowing seasons and three levels of irrigation. Fertilization and other cultivation conditions were optimal. The aim of this experiment was to select among the three crops the crop that better ensures the production of statistically significant results. Finally, corn was selected because of its manifested greater productivity and its higher nutrients and irrigation water requirements, as well as its lower productivity fluctuation depending on sowing date and irrigation levels.After the harvesting of the above crops, pea (Pisum sativum L.) was sown in autumn 2015 and was grown during winter and early spring to be eventually incorporated into the soil before the sowing of a new maize crop by the end of April, 2016. The maize was harvested in autumn 2016 and the soil was plowed and prepared again for a new pea cultivation that was grown during winter 2016 to early spring 2017 and was finally incorporated into the soil. Then the soil was prepared again and sown with maize in the beginning of May 2017. The experiment ended with the harvest of maize in October 2017.Each experimental year and until the final harvest, intermediate distracting samplings (harvests) were performed. In the second and third year of maize experiments (2016 and 2017), a factorial split-plot design was applied in three blocks. Different irrigation inputs were applied to the main plots e.g. I1 = 33%, I2 = 66%, and I3 = 100% of maximum evapotranspiration. The subplots comprised to the application or not of green manuring. The crops were overhead irrigated 4 times during 2015 cultivation period receiving 170 mm of water. Then drip irrigation was applied in 6 applications for all treatments with a total of 193.6 mm, 336.0 mm and 510.0 mm water applied for I1, I2 kai I3 treatments, respectively.Drip irrigation was also used during the 2016 irrigation period, and 9 irrigations were applied with corresponding total water amounts of 184.9 mm, 363.8 mm and 545.6 mm for I1, I2, and I3, respectively. Before germination, irrigation with 30 mm was applied for good emergence. For the growing period of year 2017, a pre-sowing sprinkler irrigation was performed, and 8 drip irrigations were carried out with corresponding total water amounts of 153.7 mm, 319.7 mm and 479.6 mm.Systematic recording of the soil moisture content was carried out with a DIVINER 2000 instrument, each experimental year. The measurements were carried out at regular time intervals (7-10 days) down to a depth of 1.0 m at 10 cm intervals (10 measurements per measurement area) for all 3 irrigation levels. Based on the measured soil moisture distribution curves along together with the irrigation water amount per irrigation, the soil water balance could be approximated. An infiltration experiment was also carried out at two sites in the experimental field, one site representing the soil undergone green manuring, and the other site in the control (without pea incorporation). Hydraulic conductivity values of these two soils were determined.The results indicated that green manure had a great positive effect on the growth, biomass and seed productivity of maize, already after the first year of green manure application on the well-irrigated plants throughout the growing season and until the end of cultivation. Significant part of this biomass comprises to storage organs (cobs) so that the final seed yield increased by 1,700-2,000 kg/ha above its already high yield (12,000-12,500 kg/ha).This conclusion is very important and confirms that green manuring increases significantly the potential crop productivity, even after the first year of application. This is attributed to the improvement of soil characteristics and soil structure that significantly affect the water use efficiency, actually converting the soil to a counterpart with much improved characteristics and crop productivity.This positive effect of green manure is maximal under conditions of full irrigation; in moderately irrigated plants, the increase in biomass and final yield was reduced to 1,300-1,700 kg/ha, but even under conditions of greater water stress - such as in the poorly irrigated plants- green manure resulted in 500 kg/ha higher yields comparing to the control.In terms of water availability, full irrigation (480-> 510 mm) fully covers the water requirements of the crop in the study area and ensures potential production of biomass (18,500-23,000 kg/ha) and seed 12,000-14,000 kg/ha. On the other hand, moderate irrigation (66% of the maximum) can largely meet these needs. Thus, application of 336 mm of water in 2015 and 364 mm of water in 2016 gave an insignificant difference in biomass and production of storage organs, while application of 320. mm in 2017 resulted in lower biomass and seed production by 3,000 and 2,000 kg/ha, respectively. In all cases, irrigation application at 33% of the maximum (155-185 mm) results in a large decrease in corn seed (7,000-8,000 kg/ha) and total biomass production (12,000-13,000 kg/ha).Intermediate pea cultivation grown in the study area may yield 5,200-8,600 kg/ha of dry biomass rich in NPK and other nutrients. Considering an average annual incorporation of about 7,000 kg dm/ha, a total of 70 t organic matter or 45-50 t of organic carbon will be added after a 10-years period per hectare corresponding to an increase of Corg by 1%. It is also expected an increase in organic nitrogen by 1,500 kg/ha and potassium about 2,100 kg/ha.These data show the great improvement of soil fertility caused by green manure application, which might be the only possibility of substantial improvement of the degraded, sloping, eroded soils occurring in the country's xerothermic zone.Apart from the improvement of soil fertility, green manure improves soil structure and the rest physical properties and the θ-h relationship due to the decompression of the topsoil. As a result, the soil moisture distribution with soil depth remains at greater levels corresponding with greater periods of stomata opening and maximum assimilation rates, in contradiction to soils receiving similar inputs but no green manure, where soil moisture ranges at lower levels, e.g. below the critical region where stomata closure and depression of assimilation occurs. The improvement of soil structure through green manuring was also reflected by the significant decrease of hydraulic conductivity (to 0.743 cm/min from 1.114 cm/min that was the value of hydraulic conductivity without previous green manuring), which was apparently due to the appreciable reduction of surface cracks.The significant increase of production cost in combination with the increasing degradation of soil fertility in recent years are responsible for the pronounced reduction trend of maize cultivation, especially in the drier regions of the country (east Thessaly plain). This cannot be allowed to be continued any further, considering the great shortage of livestock production in Greece. On the contrary, the wide spread of maize should be supported using modern low-input practices that will considerably increase its yield and production. The twofold of the proposed practices is the application of drip irrigation with parallel application of fertigation, and the intermediate cultivation of legumes as green manure, as concluded by the present study.In particular, a high percentage of maximum yield can be achieved by applying ca. 30% less irrigation, while the application of green manure will drastically reduce the transpiration coefficient and increase the effective production potential. Combined with the results from previous relative studies it is proved that the cost of green manure application is over helmed by the productivity increase and the reduction of fertilization inputs so that the final result will be the increase in the farmer income. This comprises a conclusion of paramount importance, according to which producers can be encouraged to immediately apply green manuring without failure risk. This is necessary for the dissemination of this important cultivation technique on a desired scale.So, by applying green manure at regular intervals, within a few years the soil fertility will be greatly increased, which will also affect both yield and cost-effectiveness of many crops and the return to cultivation of many abandoned lands. In the case of maize, the application of green manure will result in the increasing of the cultivated area, the increase in the total seed and livestock feed production, and finally the reduction in the large animal production deficit of the country. Quantitative Analysis of the Effect of Green Manure on Water Use Efficiency in its Application to Maize Crop in the Thessalian Plain. 2nd Congress for Sustainable Agriculture, Larissa 22nd February 2020.Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας ήταν η μελέτη της συνδυαστικής επίδρασης της άρδευσης και της χλωρής λίπανσης στην αύξηση και παραγωγικότητα του αραβόσιτου, την αύξηση του λόγου ωφελιμότητας του νερού (Water Use Efficiency), τη βελτίωση του εδάφους και την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος υπό θεσσαλικές συνθήκες.Η πρωτοτυπία της παρούσας διατριβής έγκειται στη μελέτη της ενδιάμεσης καλλιέργειας μπιζελιού και της ενσωμάτωσης της συνολικής βιομάζας ως χλωρής λίπανσης πριν την εγκατάσταση του καλαμποκιού, με ταυτόχρονη μελέτη της αύξησης και παραγωγικότητας κάτω από διαφορετικά επίπεδα άρδευσης και της βελτίωσης των εδαφικών ιδιοτήτων. Επίσης, εξετάστηκε η αύξηση του δυναμικού παραγωγής λόγω της αύξησης της γονιμότητας του εδάφους αλλά και του λόγου ωφελιμότητας του νερού (Water Use Efficiency). Πριν την εγκατάσταση των πειραμάτων έγινε προσδιορισμός των κύριων εδαφικών φυσικοχημικών ιδιοτήτων. Ο μέσος όρος της περιεκτικότητας σε άργιλο των 12 εδαφικών δειγμάτων που συλλέχθηκαν ήταν 39.7% (για το επιφανειακό βάθος 0 - 30 cm) και 42% (για το βάθος 30-60 cm). Συνεπώς, η υφή των εδαφικών δειγμάτων ήταν αργιλώδης, χωρίς ιδιαίτερα προβλήματα γονιμότητας, με εξαίρεση τη χαμηλή περιεκτικότητα σε ανταλλάξιμο κάλιο στις υποεπιφανειακές εδαφικές στρώσεις. Oι τιμές της Ικανότητας Ανταλλαγής Κατιόντων (ΙΑΚ) ήταν σχετικά υψηλές, ενώ η περιεκτικότητα σε οργανική ουσία ήταν ικανοποιητική στους επιφανειακούς (2.9%) και αρκετά χαμηλή στους υποεπιφανειακούς ορίζοντες. Οι τιμές pH των επιφανειακών εδαφικών στρώσεων κυμαίνονταν από 7.6 έως 7.8, ενώ οι αντίστοιχες τιμές στους υποεπιφανειακούς ορίζοντες μεταξύ 7.8 και 8.0. Για τις ανάγκες της διατριβής εγκαταστάθηκαν πειράματα στο αγρόκτημα του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας στο Βελεστίνο. Τα πειράματα είχαν τριετή διάρκεια με έτος έναρξης το 2015. Το πρώτο έτος μελετήθηκε η αύξηση και παραγωγικότητα του καλαμποκιού και επιπρόσθετα του ηλίανθου και του βαμβακιού, κάτω από τρία επίπεδα άρδευσης και δύο εποχές σποράς. Η λίπανση και οι λοιπές καλλιεργητικές συνθήκες ήταν βέλτιστες. Σκοπός του πειράματος ήταν η επιλογή μιας εκ των τριών καλλιεργειών για τη συνέχιση των πειραμάτων με βάση την καλύτερη διασφάλιση εξαγωγής των στατιστικά σημαντικότερων αποτελεσμάτων. Τελικά επιλέχθηκε το καλαμπόκι, λόγω της μεγάλης του παραγωγικότητας που ξεπερνά κατά πολύ τις αντίστοιχες αποδόσεις του ηλίανθου και του βαμβακιού, ενώ χαρακτηρίζεται από τις μεγαλύτερες ανάγκες σε θρεπτικά στοιχεία και αρδευτικό νερό, και τη μικρότερη διακύμανση της παραγωγικότητάς του σε σχέση με τα επίπεδα άρδευσης και την εποχή σποράς.Μετά το τέλος της συγκομιδής των παραπάνω καλλιεργειών, έγινε σπορά κτηνοτροφικού μπιζελιού (Pisum sativum L.) το φθινόπωρο του 2015, το οποίο αναπτύχθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα και νωρίς την άνοιξη για να ενσωματωθεί τελικά στο έδαφος πριν την εγκατάσταση του καλαμποκιού στα τέλη Απριλίου 2016. Μετά την τελική κοπή του καλαμποκιού το φθινόπωρο του 2016, ακολούθησε όργωμα και καλλιεργητής και νέα σπορά μπιζελιού, το οποίο αναπτύχθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα 2016 και νωρίς την άνοιξη του 2017, για να ενσωματωθεί και πάλι στο έδαφος πριν την εγκατάσταση του καλαμποκιού στις αρχές Μαΐου 2017. Το πείραμα τελείωσε με τη συγκομιδή του καλαμποκιού τον Οκτώβριο του 2017. Κάθε πειραματικό έτος και μέχρι την τελική συγκομιδή, πραγματοποιούνταν ενδιάμεσες δειγματοληπτικές κοπές. Το δεύτερο και τρίτο έτος των πειραμάτων αραβοσίτου (2016 και 2017) εφαρμόστηκε παραγοντικό σχέδιο διχαζομένων συγκροτημάτων σε τρεις επαναλήψεις. Στα κύρια τεμάχια εφαρμόσθηκε διαφοροποιημένη άρδευση με εφαρμογή τριών διαφορετικών επιπέδων νερού άρδευσης, Ι1= 33% της ΕΤο, Ι2 = 66% της ΕΤο και Ι3 = 100% της ΕΤο, ενώ τα υποτεμάχια ήταν η εφαρμογή χλωρής λίπανσης με μπιζέλι που αναπτυσσόταν την περίοδο Νοεμβρίου – Απριλίου και η μη εφαρμογή χλωρής λίπανσης στους μάρτυρες. Το πείραμα αρδεύτηκε 4 φορές με καταιονισμό την καλλιεργητική περίοδο του 2015, ενώ πραγματοποιήθηκαν επιπλέον 6 στάγδην αρδεύσεις, για όλες τις μεταχειρίσεις. Με καταιονισμό εφαρμόστηκαν 170 mm νερού, ενώ με τη στάγδην άρδευση εφαρμόσθηκαν συνολικές ποσότητες 193.6 mm, 336.0 mm και 510.0 mm, για τις 3 διαφοροποιημένες μεταχειρίσεις. Η μέθοδος της στάγδην άρδευσης χρησιμοποιήθηκε και την περίοδο άρδευσης 2016, κατά την οποία εφαρμόσθηκαν 9 αρδεύσεις με αντίστοιχες συνολικές ποσότητες νερού 184.9 mm, 363.8 mm και 545.6 mm για τα 3 επίπεδα άρδευσης αντίστοιχα. Πριν το φύτρωμα, χρησιμοποιήθηκε καταιονισμός με ύψος άρδευσης 30 mm. Το 2017, έγινε μία άρδευση με καταιονισμό πριν το φύτρωμα και εφαρμόσθηκαν 8 στάγδην αρδεύσεις με αντίστοιχες συνολικές ποσότητες νερού 153.7, 319.7 και 479.6 mm.Η συστηματική μέτρηση της περιεχόμενης εδαφικής υγρασίας, κάθε πειραματικό έτος πραγματοποιούταν με όργανο DIVINER 2000. Με το όργανο αυτό γινόταν κατά τακτά χρονικά διαστήματα (7-10 ημέρες) μέτρηση της εδαφικής υγρασίας σε βάθος 1 m ανά διαστήματα 10 cm (10 μετρήσεις ανά περιοχή μέτρησης). Τέτοιες μετρήσεις υγρασίας πραγματοποιήθηκαν και για τα 3 υπό μελέτη επίπεδα άρδευσης. Με τις μετρήσεις κατανομής υγρασίας με το βάθος και τα ποσά άρδευσης ανά ημερομηνία άρδευσης και τις ημέρες που μεσολαβούσαν μεταξύ των μετρήσεων, ήταν δυνατός ο προσδιορισμός του υδατικού ισοζυγίου στο έδαφος. Επίσης έγινε μέτρηση της διηθητικότητας σε δύο θέσεις του πειραματικού αγρού (σε μια θέση όπου έχει εφαρμοστεί ενσωμάτωση μπιζελιού και σε μια θέση μάρτυρα) και προσδιορισμός των τιμών της υδραυλικής αγωγιμότητας των δύο αυτών εδαφών.Από τα αποτελέσματα προέκυψε ότι η χλωρή λίπανση έχει μεγάλη θετική επίδραση στην αύξηση και παραγωγικότητα της βιομάζας και του σπόρου του αραβόσιτου ήδη από το πρώτο έτος μετά την εφαρμογή της χλωρής λίπανσης στα καλώς αρδευόμενα φυτά, καθ’ όλη την περίοδο ανάπτυξης και μέχρι το τέλος της καλλιέργειας. Μεγάλο μέρος της βιομάζας αυτής αφορά στα καρποφόρα όργανα (σπάδικες) και στο τελικό οικονομικό προϊόν (σπόρο) που αυξήθηκε κατά 170-200 kg/στρ πάνω από την ήδη υψηλή τιμή του (1200-1250 kg/στρ).Το συμπέρασμα αυτό είναι πολύ σημαντικό και επιβεβαιώνει ότι με τη χλωρή λίπανση το δυναμικό παραγωγής αυξάνει σημαντικά, και μάλιστα ήδη από το πρώτο έτος εφαρμογής της. Και αυτό γιατί βελτιώνονται σημαντικά τα εδαφικά χαρακτηριστικά και η εδαφική δομή που επιδρούν στο δείκτη ωφελιμότητας του νερού και ουσιαστικά στη «μετατροπή» του εδάφους σε ένα άλλο έδαφος με σαφώς βελτιωμένα τα χαρακτηριστικά παραγωγικότητας.Η θετική αυτή επίδραση της χλωρής λίπανσης είναι μέγιστη υπό συνθήκες πλήρους άρδευσης. Στα μετρίως αρδευόμενα φυτά, η αύξηση της βιομάζας και της τελικής απόδοσης περιορίστηκε στα 130-170 kg/στρ. Όμως ακόμα και υπό συνθήκες μεγαλύτερου υδατικού στρες (όπως στα φυτά της ελλιπούς άρδευσης), η χλωρή λίπανση έδωσε κατά 50 kg/στρ μεγαλύτερες αποδόσεις από αυτές του μάρτυρα.Από πλευράς διαθεσιμότητας νερού, η πλήρης άρδευση καλύπτει απόλυτα τις υδατικές ανάγκες της καλλιέργειας και εξασφαλίζει δυναμικό παραγωγής βιομάζας (1850-2300 kg/στρ) και σπόρου (1200-1400 kg/στρ). Όμως και η μέτρια άρδευση (66% της μέγιστης) μπορεί να ικανοποιήσει σε μεγάλο βαθμό τις ανάγκες αυτές. Η εφαρμογή 336 mm νερού το 2015 και 364 mm νερού το 2016 έδωσε μη στατιστικά σημαντική διαφορά παραγωγής βιομάζας και οργάνων καρποφορίας, ενώ το 2017 εφαρμογή 320 mm είχε ως αποτέλεσμα μικρότερη παραγωγή βιομάζας και σπόρου κατά 300 και 200 kg/στρ, αντίστοιχα. Αντίθετα, εφαρμογή άρδευσης στο 33% της μέγιστης επιφέρει σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις μεγάλη πτώση της παραγωγής βιομάζας (1200-1300 kg/στρ) και του σπόρου καλαμποκιού (700-800 kg/στρ).Η εγκατάσταση κτηνοτροφικού μπιζελιού το φθινόπωρο και η ανάπτυξή του τη χειμερινή περίοδο στην περιοχή της ανατολικής θεσσαλικής πεδιάδας (Βελεστίνο) μπορεί να εξασφαλίσει μέχρι την ενσωμάτωσή του πριν την εγκατάσταση του καλαμποκιού (και οποιασδήποτε άλλης εαρινής καλλιέργειας) περίπου 520-860 kg ξηρής βιομάζας ανά στρέμμα με μεγάλη περιεκτικότητα σε NPK και λοιπά θρεπτικά συστατικά. Έτσι, εφαρμογή χλωρής λίπανσης με μπιζέλι για μια δεκαετία και ετήσια ενσωμάτωση περί τα 700 kg ξηρής ουσίας ανά στρέμμα μπορεί να αυξήσει την οργανική ουσία του εδάφους κατά 7 t ή περίπου κατά 4.5 t οργανικό άνθρακα ή αύξηση του επιφανειακού Corg κατά 1% και περισσότερο. Επίσης προβλέπεται αύξηση του οργανικού αζώτου κατά 150 kg και του καλίου περίπου κατά 210 kg. Τα στοιχεία αυτά δείχνουν τη θεμελιώδους σημασίας βελτίωση της γονιμότητας του εδάφους που προκαλεί η χλωρή λίπανση, η οποία αποτελεί και τη μοναδική ουσιαστική δυνατότητα βελτίωσης πολύ υποβαθμισμένων, επικλινών, διαβρωμένων εδαφών της ξηρο-θερμικής ζώνης της χώρας. Εκτός από τη βελτίωση της γονιμότητας του εδάφους με την προσθήκη οργανικής ουσίας και θρεπτικών συστατικών, μέσω της χλωρής λίπανσης βελτιώνεται σημαντικά η δομή και οι λοιπές φυσικές ιδιότητες του εδάφους, όπως και η σχέση μεταξύ υγρασίας και δυναμικού πίεσης (μύζησης) λόγω μείωσης της συμπίεσης των (ανώτερων) εδαφικών στρώσεων, ώστε η κατανομή υγρασίας με το βάθος να βρίσκεται σε υψηλότερα επίπεδα στο έδαφος που έχει υποστεί χλωρή λίπανση σε σύγκριση με το έδαφος - μάρτυρα. Όπως προέκυψε από τις σχετικές μετρήσεις με τη συσκευή DIVINER, στα εδάφη που έχουν υποστεί χλωρή λίπανση, η εδαφική υγρασία μπορεί να βρίσκεται σε επίπεδα μέγιστης διαπνοής (πλήρως ανοικτά στομάτια και μέγιστος ρυθμός αφομοίωσης) όταν σε ίδια εδάφη που έχουν δεχθεί τις ίδιες καλλιεργητικές φροντίδες και εισροές (άρδευσης, λίπανσης και φυτοπροστασίας), αλλά χωρίς
