Disseminated solid contaminants in soils and sediments related to the fossil fuel geology of adjacent energy resources

The aim of the present thesis is the characterization of soil/sediment organic matter (SOM) in areas adjacent to places of coal deposit exploitation for power generation in Greece. The study isfocused on the surroundings of Megalopolis (Prefecture of Arcadia, Peloponnese, Southern Greece)and Aliveri Power Plants (Prefecture of Evia, Central Greece). Despite their common feature regarding the domestic lignite exploitation, including mining and combustion, for the generation of electric power both areas display significant differences concerning other human activities, their historical, geomorphological and geological backgrounds. The Megalopolis Lignite Centre (MLC) hosts the only heavy industrial activity taking place in the intermontane Megalopolis Basin, where large water bodies, which would enable the deposition of modern sediments under relatively stable conditions, are lacking. The basin is drained by Alfeios River and its tributaries, the flow of which has been diverted at several sites due to the activities of the MLC. On the other hand, Aliveri area is a coastal one, providing the opportunity to study not only soil samples but marine sediments from the adjacent Aliveri Gulf and lake sediments from the Dystos basin with the homonymous lake, as well. Additionally, beyond the domestic lignite, Aliveri Power Plant utilized a variety of fuels including coal of various rank and crude oil, whereas since the early 1980s a cement factory is also operating in the region. All the above along with the different mining techniques applied in Megalopolis and Aliveri Mines (opencast vs. underground mining) provide an excellent opportunity for the comparison of the organic matter composition with respect to human activity among soils of both areas but also among sediments deposited in various environments such as marine, fluvial and lacustrine ones. The study focused on the tracing of particulate organic matter sources (natural and anthropogenic) taking into consideration the geological background of both areas and on the determination of the extent each of these sources contributes to the organic matter composition implying the extent into which each of them affects land’s major carbon pools. Additionally, potential pollution in the form of toxic trace elements and organic pollutants caused by human activity in both areas was also investigated.Ninety (90) soil samples taken from 40 sites in Megalopolis area, along with 57 soil and lake sediment samples taken from 26 sites in Aliveri area and 18 marine sediment samples taken from 11 sites in Aliveri Gulf, were the objective of the study. Lignite, bottom- and flyash samples obtained from the MLC were also studied, whereas the sampling of similar material from the Aliveri Power Plant was not possible because the power plant is being fueled with natural gas since 2008 and lignite mining ceased in the area since the early 1980s. In all soil and sediment samples the pH and electric conductivity values were determined, along with particle size and mineralogical composition. The chemical composition, including major, trace and rare earth elements, was determined in selected samples, whereas in a smaller number of samples the distribution of elemental concentration in five geochemical fractions, namely the exchangeable, the carbonate, the Fe-Mn oxides, the organic matter/sulphide and the residual ones, was determined applying sequential extraction. Organic matter and total organic carbon (TOC) contents were determined in all samples, whereas the concentration of the carbon fraction deriving from combustion and being thermally-resistant (Ctr), the so-called “black carbon”, was determined in selected samples. According to the organic matter content and the relative position certain samples were picked out and subjected to organic petrography examination. This was performed on polished blocks prepared from the light fraction obtained after density separation of the samples using ZnCl2 solution (1.8 g/mL). The examination included maceral point counting, reflectance and fluorescence spectra measurements on proper macerals. For the needs of point counting, a classification scheme based on three major groups of particles, namely coal, carbonized and modern organic matter particles was developed combining widely adopted classification schemes for the petrographic classification of each of these groups. Finally, the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in the marine sediment samples from the Aliveri Gulf applying Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Aliveri soil samples were proved to be slightly coarser, as their majority is characterized as sandy mud and muddy sand, than Megalopolis soil samples, which are mostly characterized as sandy mud. The marine sediments from Aliveri Gulf contain higher silt content than the soil samples of the same area. The pH values mostly lay in the alkaline region for samples from both areas with Megalopolis samples displaying slightly higher values. On the contrary, Aliveri soil samples display higher electric conductivity values than the Megalopolis ones, presumably due to their proximity to the sea. The highest values for both pH and electric conductivity were measured in the marine sediment samples from the Aliveri Gulf.Organic matter content determined as weight loss after long-term oxidation at 440°C was slightly higher than this determined applying the same technique at 375°C, by a factor ranging between 1.05-1.55 for all three groups of samples with a very good correlation coefficient (r>0.90, r=0.94). Organic matter determination after H2O2, oxidation constantly underestimated this parameter, whereas the correlation with thermal oxidation was also proved to be poor in a few cases. Megalopolis soils revealed higher average organic matter contents than the Aliveri marine sediments and the Aliveri soil samples; the latter display the lowest organic matter average. The TOC values determined after thermal treatment for the removal of carbonates (TOCth) revealed more or less the same trend to organic matter content, with the latter being higher than the former by a factor ranging from 1.98 for Aliveri soil samples to 2.76 for Megalopolis soil samples. The determination of TOC applying wet oxidation (TOCwb) constantly yielded lower values for all samples pointing to underestimation. Quantitative mineralogical analysis revealed the predominance of silicate mineral on expense of carbonates in soil samples from both areas, except for those developed on carbonate-rich sediments. On the contrary, carbonate content was higher in the marine sediment samples. Quartz is the dominant mineral from the silicate group with clay minerals being second and feldspars participating at low concentrations. Carbonates are usually represented by calcite in soil samples, whereas in the marine sediments they also include aragonite, Mg-calcite and to a lesser extent dolomite. Proportionally to the mineralogical composition major oxide composition revealed the predominance of SiO2, with CaO, Fe2O3 and Al2O3 displaying lower concentrations in the three groups of samples. CaO is dominant in the marine sediment samples and in the Alfeios River sediments, whereas in the soil samples from both areas Fe2O3 and Al2O3 prevail. A plethora of trace elements is enriched in soil and sediment samples compared to the average concentrations in both upper continental crust and soils worldwide, although the enrichment factor always depends on the referencebasis. Independently on the calculation method Co, Mo, Ni and to a lesser extent As can be considered enriched elements in Megalopolis soils. In Aliveri soils Co, Cr, Ni, V and to a lesser extent Mo and U can be considered enriched elements. According to the results of the sequential extraction Co is mostly associated with the Fe-Mn fraction, Cr with the organic matter/sulphide fraction, whereas the otherelements are evenly distributed between the same fraction and the residual one. Relatively high concentrations in the exchangeable fraction were only determined for Mo in samples from both areas, posing an environmental hazard. Rare earth element analysis showed a positive anomaly in Ce concentrations in a significant number of samples. This anomaly is attributed to pedogenic processes and points to in-situ weathering of parent rock and soil formation. A positive Gd anomaly determined in a small number of samples can be attributed to their organic matter content. The petrographic analysis of the soil/sediment light fraction accounting for the organic matter contained in each sample revealed a wide range of organic matter composition. Comparing the average of the three major groups of petrographic constituents it is evident that anthropogenic organic matter accounts for 32.2% of the total organic matter in Megalopolis soils, for 47% in Aliveri soils and for 71% in Aliveri-Gulf marine sediments. The proximity of the latter to both the Aliveri Power Plant and the cement factory is the main reason for the elevated anthropogenic organic matter content in the marine sediments. There is a significant difference in the composition of the anthropogenic matter in the samples from both areas. In Megalopolis soils it is mostly composed of lignite particles derived from mining, transportation and weathering of stockpiles. On the contrary, in Aliveri soil and marine sediment samples the major part of anthropogenic organic matter is composed of char particles derived from the combustion of lignite and medium-rank coal. The presence of medium-rank coal particles was ascertained through reflectance measurements, along with the presence of anisotropic particles, which usually derive from the combustion of medium-rank coal. Medium-rank coal particles displayed higher content in the Aliveri soils, where according to reflectance measurements at least four coal groups of the same rank have been used in the past. In Megalopolis soils reflectance measurements suggest the utilization of at least two groups of coal of similar rank in the MLC power plants. The most evident effect from the operation of the cement factory on soil/sediment organic matter composition is the presence of pet coke particles in the sediments from the Aliveri Gulf and in soil adjacent to this industrial unit. Additionally, the petrographic examination revealed that a significant number of coal and modern organic matter particles showed traces of thermal alteration, along with reflectance and fluorescence spectra values not consistent to their expected rank. This can be attributed to partial oxidation induced from soil heating mostly due to wildfires. Another evidence is suggested by the presence of biochars, with their reflectance values pointing to a formation temperature ranging between 250° and 400°C.PAHs concentrations in the Aliveri Gulf marine sediments are within regular Mediterranean Sea levels and below the effect range-low (1000 ng/g), which is considered hazardous to human health. PCBs concentrations are negligible. PAHs source appointment revealed a mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic origin. PAHs concentrations in seawater from the same sampling sites are extremely low suggesting enhanced sorption to char and to a lesser extent to medium-rank coal particles. It is evident that human activity in the form of heavy industry has significantly affected the composition of organic matter in soils and sediments from both areas. However, no severe pollution neither in the form of toxic trace elements (with the exception of Mo) nor in the form of organic pollutants was traced in both areas. On the contrary, in the case of organic pollutants it was proved that anthropogenic organic matter, particularly the fraction deriving from combustion plays a restraining role disabling PAHs mobility and preventing their escape to seawater and to the food chain consequently. The application of Organic Petrography techniques in the study of complex natural systems such as soils and sediments, and the processes that control their formation can provide useful information concerning the composition and origin of organic matter. Additionally, it can provide useful information for the interpretation of pedogenic processes such as weathering and thermal alteration of a soil profile, whereas it is a powerful tool in the environmental study of soil and sediments as it provides evidence on the origin of both inorganic and organic pollutants but also assists in the interpretation of phenomena controlling their mobility, such as this of sorption.Ἡ παρούσα διατριβή έχει ως στόχο τον χαρακτηρισμό της οργανικής ύλης, που περιέχεται σε εδάφη και ιζήματα που βρίσκονται στην ευρύτερη περιοχή κέντρων εκμετάλλευσης κοιτασμάτων γαιάνθρακα για την παραγωγή ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας στην Ἑλλάδα. Πιο συγκεκριµένα η έρευνα εστίασε στις περιοχές των Ατμοηλεκτρικών Σταθμών (ΑΗΣ) της ΔΕΗ στη Μεγαλόπολη (Ν. Αρκαδίας) και το Αλιβέρι (Ν. Εύβοιας). Οι δύο περιοχές εμφανίζουν το κοινό χαρακτηριστικό τής εξόρυξης και καύσης λιγνίτη για ηλεκτροπαραγωγή αλλά και πολλές διαφορές τόσο ως προς τις λοιπές ανθρώπινες δραστηριότητες, την ιστορία, καθώς και το γεωμορφολογικό και γεωλογικό τους πλαίσιο. Στην ενδοηπειρωτική λεκάνη της Μεγαλόπολης η µόνη βιομηχανική δραστηριότητα αφορά στην παραγωγή ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας στο εκεί Λιγνιτικό Κέντρο (ΑΛΚΜ), ενώ πρόκειται για µια περιοχή, η οποία δεν γειτονεύει µε μεγάλα υδάτινα σώματα που επιτρέπουν την απόθεση σύγχρονων ιζημάτων σε σχετικά ήρεμα περιβάλλοντα ιζηµατογένεσης. Ἡ περιοχή αποστραγγίζεται από το σύστημα του Αλφειού Ποταμού, ο οποίος διασχίζει την έκταση του ΛΚΜ και σε ορισμένα σηµεία έχει υποστεί εκτροπή της κοίτης του. Η περιοχή Αλιβερίου είναι µία παράκτια περιοχή, που επιτρέπει τη λήψη δειγμάτων όχι µόνο εδαφών, αλλά και πρόσφατων θαλάσσιων ιζημάτων εντός του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου και λιµναίων ιζημάτων από τη Λίμνη Δύστο, η οποία βρίσκεται σε γειτονική λεκάνη, ΝΑ του Αλιβερίου. Ακόμη στον ΑΗΣ Αλιβερίου οι διαφορετικοί τύποι καυσίμων, που έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί κατά καιρούς τόσο για ηλεκτροπαραγωγή. Όσο και στο παρακείμενο εργοστάσιο παραγωγής τσιμέντου της ΑΓΕΤ-ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ σε συνδυασμό µε τη διαφορετική μέθοδο εξόρυξης (υπόγεια) σε σχέση µε την περιοχή της Μεγαλόπολης (επιφανειακή εξόρυξη) προσφέρουν ευκαιρία σύγκρισης της σύστασης της οργανικής ύλης μεταξύ των εδαφών των δύο περιοχών, αλλά και μεταξύ ιζημάτων, που αποτέθηκαν σε διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα ιζηµατογένεσης, ὀπως είναι το ποτάμιο, το λιμναίο και το παράκτιο πάντα σε σχέση µε τις ανθρώπινες δραστηριότητες στη γύρω περιοχή. Η έρευνα εστίασε στον εντοπισμό των πηγών (φυσικών και ανθρωπογενών), που συνεισφέρουν στη σύσταση της οργανικής ύλης του εδάφους και των πρόσφατων ιζημάτων σε σωματιδιακό επίπεδο και σε σχέση µε το γενικότερο γεωλογικό και μορφολογικό πλαίσιο της κάθε περιοχής. Επιχειρήθηκε να προσδιοριστούν ο βαθµός που η καθεμιά από αυτές τις πηγές επηρεάζει αυτήν τη σύσταση και κατ΄ επέκταση ο βαθμός, στον οποίο οι ανθρώπινες δραστηριότητες επηρεάζουν κάποιες από τις σημαντικότερες δεξαμενές άνθρακα της ξηράς και της θάλασσας. Επιπλέον διερευνήθηκε ενδεχόµενη ρύπανση στις δύο αυτές περιοχές από συγκεντρώσεις ιχνοστοιχείων και συγκεκριμένων οµάδων οργανικών ρύπων. που έχουν προκύψει από τις δραστηριότητες, που αναφέρθηκαν παραπάνω. Αντικείμενο της έρευνας αποτέλεσαν 90 δείγματα εδάφους και ιζημάτων του Αλφειού Ποταμού, που λήφθηκαν από 40 θέσεις της περιοχής Μεγαλόπολης, καθώς και 57 δείγματα εδάφους και λιµναίων ιζημάτων από 26 θέσεις της περιοχής Αλιβερίου µαζί µε 18 δείγματα θαλάσσιων ιζημάτων από 11 θέσεις δειγματοληψίας εντός του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου. Συμπληρωματικά εξετάστηκαν δείγματα λιγνίτη, τέφρας εστίας και ιπτάµενης τέφρας απὀ τους ΑΗΣ Μεγαλόπολης, ενώ δεν κατέστη δυνατή η δειγματοληψία αντίστοιχων δειγμάτων από τις εγκαταστάσεις του ΑΗΣ Αλιβερίου καθώς η εκμετάλλευση του τοπικού κοιτάσματος για την παραγωγή ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας έχει σταματήσει στην περιοχή από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980. Σε όλα τα δείγματα εδαφών και ιζημάτων προσδιορίστηκαν το pH, η ηλεκτρική αγωγιμότητα, η κοκκοµετρική και η ορυκτολογική τους σύσταση. Επιπλέον σε επιλεγμένα δείγµατα προσδιορίστηκε η χημική σύσταση σε επίπεδο κυρίων στοιχείων και ιχνοστοιχείων, καθώς και οἱ συγκεντρώσεις των σπανίων γαιών. Σε 13 δείγματα πραγματοποιήθηκε προσδιορισμός της συγκέντρωσης των ιχνοστοιχείων στις γεωχημικές φάσεις (ανταλλάξιμο κλάσμα, ανθρακικά ορυκτά, οξείδια Fe-Mn, οργανική ὑλη/θειούχα ορυκτά και υπολειμματικό κλάσμα), που προέκυψαν µέσω κλασματικής εκχύλισης. Στο σύνολο των δειγμάτων επιπλέον προσδιορίστηκαν η περιεκτικότητα σε οργανική ύληκαι οργανικό άνθρακα, ενώ σε επιλεγμένα δείγματα προσδιορίστηκε ἢ περιεκτικότητα στο κλάσμα του άνθρακα, που έχει προέλθει από τις διεργασίες της καύσης και είναι θερμικά ανθεκτικό (Ctr) το οποίο έχει επικρατήσει να ονομάζεται «μαύρος άνθρακας». Βάσει της περιεκτικότητας σε οργανική ύλη και της θέσης των δειγμάτων επιλέχθηκαν συγκεκριµένα δείγματα για ανθρακοπετρογραφική εξέταση. Η εξέταση πραγματοποιήθηκε σε στιλπνά δοκίμια που παρασκευάστηκαν από το ελαφρύ κλάσμα των δειγμάτων, το οποίο συγκεντρώθηκε µετά τον βαρυτικό διαχὠρισµό των τελευταίων µε χρήση διαλύματος ZnCl2 (1.5 g/mL). Η εξέταση περιέλαβε σηµειακή καταμέτρηση των μικροσκοπικά αναγνωρίσιµων συστατικών (PAHs), μετρήσεις ανακλαστικότητας και φάσματος φθορισμού σε επιλεγμένα και κατάλληλα προς μέτρηση maceral. Για τη σηµειακή καταμέτρηση εφαρμόστηκε ένα σύστημα ταξινόμησης των σωματιδίων µε τις τρεις κύριες οµάδες σωματιδίων να διακρίνονται σε σωματίδια γαιάνθρακα (coal particles) εξανθρακωμένα σωματίδια (carbonized particles) και σύγχρονη οργανική ύλη (modern organic matter), τροποποιώντας και συνδυάζοντας τα υπάρχοντα συστήµατα ταξινόμησης για κάθε κατηγορία σωματιδίων. Τέλος στα θαλάσσια ιζήματα του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου προσδιορίστηκαν οι συγκεντρώσεις των πολυκυκλικών αρωματικών υδρογονανθράκων (ΡΑΗs) και των πολυχλωριωμµένων διφαινυλίων µε τη βοήθεια της αέριας χρωματογραφίας-φασματομετρίας µάζας. Από. πλευράς κοκκοµετρικής σύστασης τα δείγματα της περιοχής Αλιβερίου είναι πιοχονδρόκοκκα, καθώς μοιράζονται μεταξύ των πεδίων της αμμούχας ιλύος και της ιλυούχας άμμου, από εκείνα της περιοχής Μεγαλόπολης, η πλειοψηφία των οποίων προβάλλεται στο πεδίο της αμμούχας ιλύος. Τα δείγματα θαλάσσιων ιζημάτων του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου είναι πιο πλούσια στο κλάσμα της ιλύος σε σύγκριση µε τα εδαφικά δείγματα της ίδιας περιοχής. Οι τιµές του pH για τις δύο περιοχές κυμαίνονται στη βασική περιοχή για τα δείγµατα εδάφους µε εκείνα της Μεγαλόπολης να εμφανίζουν ελαφρά πιο αυξημένες τιµές. Αντίθετα τα εδάφη της περιοχής Αλιβερίου εμφανίζουν υψηλότερες τιµές ηλεκτρικής αγωγιμότητας σε σύγκριση µε αυτά της Μεγαλόπολης, πιθανότατα λόγω της επίδρασης της θάλασσας, ενώ οι υψηλότερες τιµές και για τις δύο παραμέτρους σημειώθηκαν στα δείγµατα θαλάσσιων ιζημάτων από τον Κόλπο Αλιβερίου. Η περιεκτικότητα σε οργανική ύλη, όπως υπολογίστηκε µετά την οξείδωση στους 4400C είναι υψηλότερη αυτής που υπολογίστηκε µετά την οξείδωση στους 3750C, κατά ένα συντελεστή που κυμαίνεται μεταξύ 1,05-1,55 για τις τρεις οµάδες δειγμάτων µε τη συσχέτιση μεταξύ των τιµών των δύο παραμέτρων να είναι πολύ καλή (r2>0,90, r>0,94). Ο υπολογισμός της οργανικής ύλης µετά την οξείδωση του δείγματος µε Η2Ο2 οδηγεί συνήθως σε υποτίμηση της περιεκτικότητας σε οργανική ύλη και η συσχέτιση µε τις τιµές που προέκυψαν από τη θερµική οξείδωση δεν είναι πάντα ικανοποιητική. Πιο πλούσια σε οργανική ύλη κατά µέσο όρο αποδείχτηκαν τα εδαφικά δείγµατα από την περιοχή Μεγαλόπολης, µε τα δείγματα θαλάσσιων ιζημάτων της περιοχής Αλιβερίου να ακολουθούν και τα εδαφικά δείγματα της ίδιας περιοχής να είναι τα φτωχότερα. Η τάση των τιμών της περιεκτικότητας σε ολικό οργανικό άνθρακα (ΤΟC), όπως αυτή προσδιορίστηκε µετά τη θερμική οξείδωση των δειγμάτων για την απομάκρυνση των ανθρακικών ορυκτών (ΤΟCth). Ακολουθεί εκείνην της οργανικής ύλης µε τη δεύτερη να είναι μεγαλύτερη της πρώτης κατά ένα συντελεστή. που κυμαίνεται από 1,98για τα εδαφικά δείγµατα της περιοχής Αλιβερίου έως 2,76 για τα εδαφικά δείγματα της περιοχής Μεγαλόπολης. Ο προσδιορισμός της περιεκτικότητας σε ΤΟC µε βάση την τεχνική της υγρής οξείδωσης (ΤΟCwb) οδηγεί σε υποτίμηση σε σύγκριση µε την πρώτη τεχνική. Η ποσοτική ορυκτολογική ανάλυση αποκάλυψε την επικράτηση των πυριτικών ορυκτών σε βάρος των ανθρακικών για τα περισσότερα δείγματα µε εξαίρεση εδάφη, που αναπτύχθηκαν επί πλούσιων σε ανθρακικό ασβέστιο ιζημάτων. Αντίθετα στα θαλάσσια ιζήματα του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου το ποσοστό των ανθρακικών ορυκτών είναι σηµαντικά αυξημένο. Ο χαλαζίας είναι το πιο κοινό από τα πυριτικἀ ορυκτά µε την ομάδα των αργιλικών ορυκτών να ακολουθεί και τους άστριους να εμφανίζονται σε χαμηλότερες συγκεντρώσεις. Τα ανθρακικά ορυκτά αντιπροσωπεύονται συνήθως από τον ασβεστίτη στα εδάφη, ενώ στα θαλάσσια ιζήματα εμφανίζονται επίσης αραγωνίτης, Μg-ούχος ασβεστίτης και λιγότερο δολοµίτης. Κατ᾽ αναλογία µε την ορυκτολογική σύσταση το SiO2 είναι το πιο άφθονο οξείδιο κυρίων στοιχείων µε τα CaO, Fe2O3 και Αl2Ο3: να ακολουθούν κατά σειρά μειούμενης µέσης συγκέντρωσης σε όλες τις οµάδες δειγμάτων. Στα περισσότερα εδάφη των δύο περιοχών επικρατούν τα δύο τελευταία στοιχεία, ενώ το CaO επικρατεί έναντι των άλλων δύο στα θαλάσσια ιζήματα του Κόλπου Αλιβερίου, αλλά και στα ιζήµατα του Αλφειού Ποταμού. Πλήθος ιχνοστοιχείων βρέθηκαν να είναι εμπλουτισμένα σε σχέση µε τις μέσες συγκεντρώσεις τους στον ανώτερο ηπειρωτικό φλοιό, αλλά και µε εκείνες στα εδάφη παγκοσμίως. Παρόλα αυτά η έννοια του εμπλουτισμού αποδείχτηκε ότι εξαρτάται άµεσα απὀ τη βάση αναφοράς, στην οποία αυτός εξετάζεται. Ανεξάρτητα µε την τελευταία αποδείχτηκε ότι για την περιοχή Μεγαλόπολης εμπλουτισµένα θεωρούνται τα στοιχεία Co, Μο, και Νi και σε μικρότερο βαθµό το As, ενώ για την περιο
