The aim of the present thesis is the characterization of soil/sediment organic matter (SOM) in areas adjacent to places of coal deposit exploitation for power generation in Greece. The study isfocused on the surroundings of Megalopolis (Prefecture of Arcadia, Peloponnese, Southern Greece)and Aliveri Power Plants (Prefecture of Evia, Central Greece). Despite their common feature regarding the domestic lignite exploitation, including mining and combustion, for the generation of electric power both areas display significant differences concerning other human activities, their historical, geomorphological and geological backgrounds.
