MINUTES OP THE MEETING OF COUNCIL JANUARY 7, 1939. 11:00 A.M. 1837. PRESENT: President Watson, in the chair; Messrs. McClenahan, Amir, Cleland, Badeau, Conn, Vandersall. Dr. Watson opened the meeting with prayer. 1838. INFORMATION: Dr. Watson reported the substance of recent correspondence, viz., a) A cablegram td the Madras conference, and a letter in reply from Dr. John R. Mott. b) A letter to the trustees regarding items to be brought to their meeting on Jan. 27th. c) Letters indicating the possibility of securing Mr. Chas. A. Gunn to serve as supervising architect in connection with new buildings on the site in Giza. The earliest possible date that Mr. Gunn might come is Oct. 15, 1939. 1839. PROPERTY: Council approved the minutes of the meetings of Dec. 10th and Dec. 31st, 1938, covering a proposed charge for police used at Ewart Hall, proposal for flood lighting a basketball court, a preliminary consideration of a request for students1 dances on the campus, and routine matters. 1840. FURLOUGHS: a) Council discussed and accepted a suggested schedule of shifts in furloughs of members of the permanent staff, to avoid undesirable absence of two or more men from the same school at the same time. b) In connection with his furlough which commences in Feb. 1939, Dr. Amir reported 1) Mrs. Conn is continuing to teach the course in Comparative Education through the second semester. 2) Dr. Smith will teach the course in Philosophy during the second semester. 3) Dr. Amir has already made adequate arrangements for material for the "Journal of Modern Education" for the remaining issues of this academic year. 4) During the second semester Dr. Smith will occupy Dr. ArairTs office. c) Council recommends that the Education Committee make specific arrangements before the departure cf Dr. Amir to take care of the questions which will arise in the Department concerning admission of students, determining those who have qualified for degrees, etc,
