PRESENT: President Watson, In the chair; Messrs. Cleland, Badeau, Conn, McClenahan, Vandersall. Dr. Watson led in prayer. 1868. MINUTES: The minutes of the meeting of March 29, 1939, were approved. 1869. UM KALTHUM: a) Dr. Watson submitted a draft of a letter to be addressed to The General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church, The Board of Foreign Mission of the United Presbyterian Church, and the Trustees of the American University at Cairo, stating our reaction to the protest which the Synod of the Nile has recently sent to these bodies regarding the renting of Ewart Hall to the Egyptian State Broadcasting Company for Urn Kalthum. Council members were asked to write out any suggestions regarding this letter, the final form to be left to Dr. Watson, Dr. McClenahan and Dr. Cleland. See memo FduLovf/rc- b) Council asked Dr. Cleland and Dr. McClenahan to confer with Mr. Ferguson, of the E.S.B., and find out his present attitude toward our purpose to improve the broadcasts set up in Ewart Hall. 1870. ADMINISTRATIVE REORGANIZATION IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES Council approved and passed on to the College Faculty a scheme for reorganization, providing: a) The Dean shall have under him two part-time administrators, to be called "Supervisors" (Arabic mushrif). They shall carry a lighter teaching load (say twelve hours) and direct the routine administration. b) Rizk Eff. Girgis is asked to head up the Secondary Section and Dr. Harold B. Smith the Junior College. c) Habib Eff. Iskander is to be given the post of principal teacher of science in the Secondary Section. Details are set forth in a letter, copy of which is filed with the minutes. ■*-871. COMMENCEMENT COMMITTEE: The President announced the appoint- ment of a Commencement Committee, and announced that he had secured Saba Bey Haba shi as the speaker. PAE
