r 1X753. 1754. 1755. 1756. 1757. I 1753. I 1759. MINUTES OF THE MEETING‘OF COUNCIL January 8, 1938 - 11 a.in. PRESENT: President Watson in the chair; Messrs. Cleland, Badeau, Conn, Amir, Vandersall. Dr. Watson led in prayer. MINUTES: The minutes of the meeting of October 23, 1937 -were approved. INFORMATION AND RECORD: a) Dr. Cleland reported that the filling of the ditch at the Giza site is practically completed, (see $1747) b) Dr. Boktor reported that the Customs Administration will not commit themselves regarding the Stratton pictures until they know the exact value, and only in terms of a specific consignment. (See $1748) c) Dr. Watson reported that since Victoria College is not taking space in the "Golden Book," he had dropped the natter. (See $1750) d) Dr. Watson reported that a reply to Labib Mishriqi had been duly sent to "Al Huda," as requested in $1751. He also presented a copy, in Arabic and in English, of a reply he had recently sent to the W.C.T.S., when they raised objections about Urn Kalthum. Dr. Cleland was asked to send a copy of this letter to the Egyptian Broadcasting Co. A copy of the letter is filed with these minutes. FINANCE: Council approved the minutes of the Finance Committee meetings of September 13 and December 18, 1937, dealing with routine matters: acoustical treatment and curtains in Ewart Hall, equipping, a shower room for women students, arrangements for a room for Journalism. STUDENTS' HALL: The Committee reported that they had received formal notifi- cation from Bishop Gwynne that the present building will not be available after June, 1938. The Hostel and Property Committees have already had one joint meeting, to consider moving the hostel to the flats at present being occuoied *by Mr. Badeau and by Mr. Farrell. i PROPERTY: Council approved the minutes of the Property Committee meetings of June 9, September 13, October 9, October 23, October 3U, November 6, and November 20, 1937. The items covered are mostly routine. A complete survey has been made of the uses of all rooms in the University; provision has been made for the Journalism department to have a large room for their work, in what was formerly the main kitchen. HOSTEL: Council approved the minutes of the Hostel Committee meetings of June 3, June 4, October 21, November 29, and December 13, 1937 dealing with routine matters: administration for 1937-38, contract with caterer to feed teachers ana students, increase in fees, amending and printing the rules, report of reasons why last year's boarders did not return, plans for the future. (See $1757) USE OF SWART HALL BY ALUMNI: Since the Alumni Association proposes, through funds to be raised at a cinema show in Ewart Hall, to relieve the University of expenses hitherto carried by the University in its behalf, it was voted to grant the Association the use of the Hall at the nominal charge of L.S. 3. The exceptional conditions connected with this action forbid it being regarded as a precedent for other requests
