• MINUTES ENGINEERING COMMITTEE THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO Tuesday 6:00 PM March 12, 1985 Nile Cruise Attending: Mr. Hedlund, Mr. Harbert, Dr. Hunsberger, Dr. Ezabi, Mr. Jungers Guests: Dr. Hitami, Dr. Nassar, Mr. Shalaby, Mr. Carr Reporter: Ms. Saad El Din 1) Approval of the Agenda 2) Approval of the minutes of the last meeting. 3) Status report on Engineering. Mr. Hedlund briefed the committee on the history of the under­graduate program in Mechanical Engineering, with reference to the Advisory Committee on Engineering that is comprised of many prominent Egyptians. Following was Dr. Hunsberger's report on the structure of the Engineering Department: the newly appointed chairman, Dr. El Wakil, full-time and part­time faculty, and the student body. Dr. Hunsberger also introduced the "Engineering Project Management Certificate" jointly offered by the Departments of Engineering and Management. In relation to this new program, the following issues were raised: 1) the relevance of this program to the needs of the Egyptian community. 2) the importance of avoiding duplication with other institutions following the same line (ex. Cairo University, Arab Contractors). 3) the possibil ity of granting academic credit for the program, as was proposed by Mr. Jungers. A report on future development in the Department of Enginnering was presented: the principal plan is to acquire an "Engineering Microcomputer Laboratory" at a cost of $100,000. This laboratory will not only serve engineering students but will also be made available to the computer science major and minor . Meeting was adjourned
