Mr. Tamraz emphasized that as an alumnus the most important and lasting memory he had of AUC was the quality of the American faculty. He hoped this could be maintained. 11. ~~Q~r! ~f !~~ ~~gl~~~rl~g g~~l!!~~: Mr. Baird. The Committee reported that as a result of new requests from the Department and confirmation from Dr. Thomas of Texas A & M, the costs of the new program in engineering were significantly revised upwards. This was true of the space, equipment, and staff requirements. Finding appropriate U.S.-trained Staff for the program has also proved difficult, and with the help of the Engineering Committee steps are being taken to determine appropriate candidates. The Committee is impressed with the quality of the Egyptian staff currently involved in the program. In general, the Committee feels the program is off to a good start. Members of the Committee have agreed to offer assistance in securing used equipment and have asked the University for a schedule ~f when the items specified in the equipment list would need to come on line. The Committee recommends solidifying mechanical engineering first and does not recommend introducing -electrical engineering until the fall of 1983. Because of the higher costs, the Committee feels that the implementation of chemical engineering should be postponed for the time being. The Committee also recommended that computer science should be expanded from a minor to a major as soon as is practicable. The Committee felt that eventually the engineering programs should be housed in an independent unit, even though it realizes that it may take some time to effect that change. 12. Alumni & StUdent Affairs Committee: Mr. Aldrich. The Committee was impressed with the activities of the Alumni Council under the leadership of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak and Mrs. Iskander. The achievements of the Council both in the area of alumni activities and fund raising has been outstanding. The Board asked Dr. Lamont to draft a suitable resolution from the 'Board for Mrs. Mubarak; and Mr. Saunier was asked to draft a letter to Mrs. Iskander for her excellent efforts. The Committee reported that tuition for Egyptian students next year would rise from LE650 to LE770 and for foreign students from $3200 to $3600
