SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES of the AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO in NEW YORK CITY Wednesday, March 3, 1943. On Wednesday, March 3, 1943, a group of New York Trustees held an informal lunch meeting at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Present were: Dr. John H. Mac- Cracken, Dr. Douglas Horton, Dr. J. T. Addison, Dr. W. H. S. Demarest and Mr. Samuel Thorne. Professor Vandersall and Dean Badeau were also present. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Mr. Vandersall's plans for the continuation of his graduate study. Mr. Vandersall reported that owing to the war it would be difficult to continue tne program of graduate study at the University of Chicago which he had planned, since most of the men with whom he needed to work were not available. He presented two alternative suggestions: (a) that he accept a position teaching physics at Wooster College, (b) that he become a research assistant to Dr. Compton at the University of Chicago, being employed on research connected with the war effort. After discussing these alternatives, the Trustees expressed their opinion in the following motion: Moved, THAT we accede to Professor Vandersall's request to associate himself with Dr. Compton at the University of Chicago in war work, until the end of his furlough (September 1944) . During this time he shall remain a full member of the University staff and receive his salary as usual with the under-standing that any salary received from the University of Chicago shall be paid to the American University at Cairo. Dean Badeau reported the various offers that had come to him from the Govern-m mnt, Ind the reasons why none of them had eventuated in a position. The Trustees urged that he continue to make connection with the O.W.I. and Mr. Thorne asked him to write a letter to him, stating the present position of negotiations. He thought that he might find some way of bringing his letter to the attention of the authorities in Washington. JOHN S. BADEAU
