MINUTES OF MEETING OF TRUSTEES FROM NEW YORK AND VICINITY June 3 1 2. A meeting of the Trustees of New York and vicinity was held in Dr. Sizoo's study, 48th Street and Fifth Avenue on Wednesday June 3rd, 1942 at lO a.m. The following Trustees were present: Chairman J. H. MacCracken, Dr. W. H. S. Demarest, Mr. Samuel Thorne, Dr. E. E. Calverley, Dr. Joseph R. Sizoo, and Mr. Lum. Mr. Lum reported on the cultivation activities in America during the year 1941-42 stressing the outstanding contribution made by Dean John S. Badeau in presenting the presentday situation in the Near East and University's relationship to it. At the same time he told of the situation in Egypt as far as the American staff is concerned, touching on the summer of 1941 when the staff had no vacation because of the necessity of looking after the evacuees from Greece, Turkey and Syria, the current year with its heavy teaching loads because of the increased College enrollment, the added war duties, and the nervous strain and feeling of uncertainty brought about by the war in Egypt itself. He then presented a resolution adopted by the Pittsburgh Trustees, urging Dean Badeau to remain in America from July 1 to December 31, 1942 (See Appendix A). After a very thorough discussion, Trustees MacCracken, Demarest, Thorne, Calverley, and Sizoo voted their unanimous opinion concerning Dean Badeau's return to Egypt as follows: 1. THAT we favor the return of Dean John S. Badeau to Cairo in time for the beginning of the college year 1942-3 if transportation by air can be made available. 2. THAT the Secretary confer with Dean Badeau relative to some agreeable ar-rangement for his family, and that Dr. Demarest make inquiries relative to this arrangement. It was the feeling of this group that Dean Badeau should be consulted immediately by Mr. Lum, that the Pittsburgh Trustees be informed of the action taken by the New York group,and if agreeable to them, circular action be taken by the entire Board of Trustees concerning Dean Badeau's return to Egypt. After accommodations by air have been secured for Dean Badeau, action should then be taken to get accommodations for Mr. Harlan D. Conn and Mr. J. H. Ludlum in the order namea. The following actions were taken by the New York Trustees with regard to the Faculty in Egypt, their vacation and their teaching loads: 1. The Trustees insist that each member of the American staff take at least one month of complete rest and relaxation away from Cairo during the summer of 1942. The Trustees stand ready to provide approximately 650 extra vacation allowance to help insure the carrying out of this suggestion which should be considered as a Trustees' order. The dispensing of this extra vacation bonus is left to the discretion of Dr. Watson. 2. While the Trustees appreciate the value of the outside war work being done by the members of the staff, they do not look with favor on the continuance of this work since it is evident to all that it is interfering seriously with the staff's efficiency as teachers and administrators of the American University at Cairo.
