FIGHT! 1' l"WLie It We are experiencing one of the greatest revolutionary epochs of human history. Over the past few years vast new upheavals have been breaking through the crust of tradition and established knowledge. New dynamic social concepts have been emerging; ancient prejudices and privileges have been challenged; horizons evrywhere have been expanding; and perhaps most disturbing of all — moral and social values have been shifting and changing. For some, the challenge is viewed with pessimism. They see us stand­ing on the bring of another Dark Ages. They foresee a nuclear holocaust, a hightening of the racial conflict, a deterioration of human morals, and a world full of hate and revolution. This is a gloomy picture indeed and its supporters can at best be called defeatists and cynics. On the other side of the ledger, there are those who view the world of today in a far brighter perspective. They realize that the world has always been plagued with problems — many of which have never been solved. They have faith and hope. They see the birth of a new world, a new age, a new and better humanity, with unlimited opportunities. They visualize the attainment of racial equality and the universal brotherhood of man. We look to our graduands as torch bearers of the new tomorrow. We have good reason to believe that they will play an important role in the enhancement of the positive aspects which make a better and more harmonious life ahead. ADOCA * .Uiv^N IfCAfTASTPopular Teacher Retires Mrs. Helen Bennett, one of L.C.I.'s finest teachers, is retiring this year after some 42 years in the classroom. At seventeen, she made the decision to attend Teacher's College, and now Mrs. Bennett has made another decision — to devote her time to rest and recipes; then use her spare time in amateur iheatre. The only bell she'll need to hear is the oven timer when she and her husband return from a concert, play or rehearsal. Seven university summer sessions at the University of Alberta gave Mrs. Bennett her B.A. with a major in social sciences. Her teaching experience has been varied, ranging from elementary to junior high. For the past 13 years Mrs. Bennett has been on the staff of the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute where she has taught mathematics and drama. Mr. Sterndale-Bennett. who was later Director-Manager of the Eaton Players of Toronto, first intro­duced her to amateur drama. She has had roles in such plays as "The Man Who Came to Dinner". "Cradle Song". "Born Yesterday". "Rebecca". "Five to Five-Thirty" and various other one-act plays. She won a Provincial Finalists' Oscar for her portrayal of Lottie in "Dark at the Top of the Stairs”. These are the reasons why wo have such a great drama teacher! Mrs. Bennett is the originator of Highlites 101 and has been director of its ten presentations. Mrs. Bennett believes that there are definitely not sufficient drama facilities at the Collegiate. A stage, workshop, and practice facilities are badly needed. Mrs. Bennett is greatly pleased by the fact that the public has come to realize the importance of education. Her students have always been people who wanted to learn and she's glad that a greater liberty of thought has developed. Over the years Mrs. Bennett has travelled to Hawaii, the British Isles and to many parts of tfie U S A. and Canada. Now. perhaps she'll have the time to continue her travels. Mrs. Bennett, your Math students. Drama students, the staff and student body in general would like to thank you for your interest and dedication and wish you the best of luck in your retirement. Corol lenc ond Cr. Isabel Wilkins. CAROL LANE has been selected to represent the Collegiate in a cultural exchange program sponsored jointly by the Alberta Department of Youth and the Government of Canada. One of a group of young people chosen because of their interest in French and their ability in having achieved a certain fluency in the language, these students will spend three weeks in France this summer on an all-expense paid trip. Felicitations Carol, et Bon Voyage.VRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Do you ever stop to think what a great year this has been for L.C.I.? Evory- one in the school can be proud of his role, small or large, in making it a great year. Basketball was the field of major achievement as the L.C.I. captured three major championships. But this was only one area of success because we also top­ped the league in football. Yet another area of success for the Collegiate was in the form of a musical comedy. Before we look at these things in detail, let's look back at September. All of us remember the sight of bibs and beanies as Frosh Week invaded L.C.I. Lots of new friends were made that week as a pleasant time was had by all. Dancing was the order of the day as the guitar smashing antics of Edmonton's Warp Fact­or took over Wednesday night. Rounding off the week were other ovonts such as a concert by tho Shai Karak and the Kangaroo Court. Yes, another unforgettablo Frosh Week. Then it was time for our football Rams to roam the field as our boys ground out another league championship. They wore undefeated in league play and split an exhibition schedule winning three and losing three. Next, the 1969 edition of the Rams, Colts and Clipper Queen took to the basketball courts. Tho Rams went all the way to the championship gamo in our second annual Invitational Basket­ball Tournament while our Colts won their league championship and tho Clippers not only won their leaguo championship, but also carried homo tho top honors in the Provincial A Girls Tournament for the third time in their history. Our cheer­leaders are not to be forgotten either. After winning the cheer competition at our Invitational Tournamont, they received a letter complementing them on their cheer­ing technique and precision. Thoy were recognized as one of Alberta's bost. Hi-lighting our year was "Oliver" which only became the success that it was through the co-operation and hard work of many. It certainly boosted our public relations and showed the community what fine entertainment wo are capable of displaying. Replacing last year's "Western Days" was "Potpourri". While people weren't busy growing beards, visiting tho museum, watching the movie, decorating tho halls, decorating themselves, or dancing, they were in tho sloppy joe eating con­test or listening to folk music. That was one week when we said anything goes, and it did! The Gainsborough Gallery were featured for a second time, at the dance on Friday night. The Students' Council has tried to provide an interesting social life at school and I hope wo have accomplished this for you in some way. Thank you for bringing us your complaints and ideas. I think we have all gained a valuable learning experience from each othor. We hove attempted to produce a book worthy of its substance—you, the students. More candids and no advertisements are only a few. Helping to bring about these changes has provided me with many new and rewording experiences. My thanks go to Mrs. MacPhcrson for all her advice, to Mr. longair and the Photography Club for the great supply- of pictures they pro­vided us with, and especially to my staff for the wonderful job they hove done. For us graduates, the past twelve years have held many challenges and experiences. We have, in these years, become aware of ourselves and others in many different aspects of life. Even more challenges owoit us. As we meet them, we must try to overcome the obstacles they present. It helps if we have an imagination and can use it to take us away from reality for even the shortest time. Parents ond Follow Graduonds. Graduation night has traditionally been a time for assessment of one's past and appraisal of one's future, for graduation represents a vital change in the life of a groduand. It domorks the end of the era of preparation ond the commencement of inde­pendent living. Some graduonds will begin work; others will continue studies, but parental and schol­astic controls will never again bo os firm. Graduation is perhops the closest equivalent in Western society of primitive manhood rites. It rep­resents a coming of age. This being the case, the transformation in the course of our lives at this moment is indeed worthy of scrutiny. Wo hove evolved from very different posts: different towns, different homes, different parents and different backgrounds. From our diverse origins we began to converge, meeting one another more and more frequently, congregating to attend the same school, and finally, focusing altogether in this one room for Graduation Night. Looking nostalgically back we can see that each of us has spent the lost twelve years in preparation for tonight ond what comes after. But there is little opportunity to savor the end- ing of this era. for time flows rolcntlossly on. We cannot grasp this instant, what is presont is whisked off to become the post, while the future looms up before us. Therefore we must tear our oyes from that receding past ond look forward toward what will be. Wo wonder, os all men hove wondered, what the future will bring. Whero will we go? What will we do? What adventures and misadventures await us in the years that lie ahead? We shall certainly never again meet as a group. We shall all go our separate ways, each of us moot­ing his future in his own fashion. Some will go on to become famous, while others will live lives of ob­scurity. Some will attain wealth, others—ond prob­ably most of us—will not. Some will bocomo per­sons of stature, while perhaps others may become infamous. Most, we fervently hope, will be happy, but it seems inevitable that in some cases this will not be. We will, of course, always be interested in the lives of our fellows, but we wonder most of all what the coming years hold in store for oursolves. Wo viow the future with a degree of foreboding because, no matter how set it may seem to be, it is mysterious and uncertain for all. If everything is uncertain, then anything is possible, and from this wo gain our freedom. Therefore, we should not be apprehensive but rather rejoice that our futures are not pre determined and established. We ore not pawns moving along on on immutable course; rather we con change ond act according to our wills. No rut is so deep; no status quo so rigid as to lock us in an inescapable groove. I cannot agree with the fatalistic clich6, "what will be, will bo." What we make, will bo. In a similar manner, our generation collectively will determine what the world will bo. This ability to mould our own world for the first time will bo on intoxicating experience. All our institutions and all our mores will fall under our scrutiny, and if they arc found lacking wo shall have the power to change thorn. What an opportunity! What a re­sponsibility! Let our generation use the same dis­criminating judgment in determining what the world will be as each member of it uses in dociding his own destiny. We have examined our pasts, noting that they were directed in preparation for this dote. We have peered into tho nebulous future, drawing not fear, but strength and freedom and responsibility from its uncertainty. Let us use tho manifold skills acquired in tho past to construct o better future. And now my friends, who hove listened pationf- ly, and I hope not without interest, to my remarks on our pasts ond our futures, it is time for mo to bring these efforts to on end. The moment is post; time moves forward and with it so must wo move. If I may, I shall closo with a little rhyme which perhaps sums up better than anything that I have said, the attitude not only of this but probably every graduat­ing doss who has suffered through a valedictory speech. The nx>nth of June approaches And now across (tic land The graduation speakers Tell lit where we stand. We stand at Armageddon, In f/ie vanguard of the press. We're standing at rite crossroads. Of a future of success. We're standing at the threshold Of careers alt brightly lit, But in the midst of nil this standing We sit and sit and sit. He's sure to be o success in business with his intense interest in World Affairs, cs exhibited in our own club. His participation has re­worded him with a minor letter. AITKEN. Debra Ann "To our dear LCI we will be true." Debbie has the distinction of being our only Gr. 12 cheerleader. She belongs to BOP. and when she's not exclaiming "yeah, Groce!" she's out manhunting. Debbie hopes to attend modelling school in September of 1969. ALLAN, Robert Bruce Mystery surrounds Bruce's main in­terest - LGAC. A future political science major, Bruce may decide to become a teacher. With his in­terest in basketball, football, ond swimming and his enjoyment of the hard vibrant sounds of acid reck music. ALLAN, Sandra Elizabeth Sondi comes across strong! She is a member of tumbling ond trampoline club, folksinging club, Tcendcfs. as well as being a car­hop at Bridgevicw. Her future is ot SAIT in television, stage ond radio arts. She has one last word for all — "Hope you make ill" ALLEN. Charlotte Chorlottc. o member of SOX Sor­ority. is also octivc in the Red Cross Club, church activities ond enjoys dancing. Charlotte, who has won some public spooking awards, plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, ond eventually enter the field of nursing. ALLSOP, Dorothy Jeanne Dor's favorite saying, "Grcol!", exemplifies her attitude towards everything involving her. Tennis courts, swimming, curling, hockey games. Sorority ond Red Cross club are all graced by her presence. Nursing at Edmonton is her future goal. ANDERSON. Arthur Macdonald "Don't just do something stand there!!" Arthur belongs to the photo club, plays football and is octivc in scouting. He likes girls in general . . . and one in par­ticular. Next year will probably see Arthur in training os on X Ray or lab technician with the Cana­dian Armed forces. ANDERSON. Randall Blake "Work hard", Randy advises fut­ure students easy to say when he'll be hundreds of miles away in Hawaii to "further his education", for now he spends his soare time working on cors. reading, ond having a good time, constantly chortling "fettefetti", (with no translation provided). ANOERSON. Raymond Blessed arc they who have nothing to say ond who connot be per­suaded to say it. ANDREWS. Judith Diane Judy's time is taken up by curl- ing. skiing. She plons to start earning money immed­iately after graduation by finding employment in Colgory. ATKINSON, Brian Gregory ’ Thought itself is probably a sup rrstition." Brian enjoys golfing and ploying hockey for the Leth­bridge Kinsmen W. Be cause of his astuteness ot golfing, he has won several tournaments. In the future Brian's plans include attending the Simon Proscr Univer­sity. AYOUNGMAN, Adeline Riding fills olmost all of Angelina's spare time. Angelina, along with the rest of the crowd, dislikes wait­ing in line for the Cafeteria. A nursing career awaits Angclinc, and next year will find her head­ing to Colgory for her training. BACEOA. Patricia Faye Pot likes everything especially fun. ond she keeps busy by work­ing at Loblaws, acting os Sorority secretory, playing badminton, golf, and being a good curler, for which she won a club championship trophy and a club bracket trophy.
