Born and raised in Lethbridge, Mr. Watson received most of his education on the North Side. After many years of teaching, he retired in 1961 to become the Attendance Officer in the Lethbridge Public School District No. 51. His work on behalf of the students of this city will long be remembered.PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE This has been a year of real progress towards our major goals of inde­pendent learning by students, organization to get maximum value from our efforts. I invite the students, who are the best judges, to consider whether or not we are succeeding in: — Making our procedures and rules clear to everyone. — using time saving routines for attendance, examinations, announce­ments, etc. — planning in advance for activities, special events, student programs, etc. — organizing a balanced program of physical, social and mental activi­ties. — developing a well disciplined but relaxed atmosphere in classes and assemblies. — promoting mutual respect between the students and the teachers. If the verdict of the students is that we are doing well in these areas, then I would feel that we are working along the right lines to make Churchill one of the best high schools in Alberta. In any event, I know that many of the people in this school have given their best to produce a strong school spirit and the kind of morale that will lead to success. Although individuals may not be mentioned here, I do wish to say that the outstanding contributions of our students, teachers, office staff, and care­takers has been noticed and appreciated. Your reward is the knowledge that you are helping to build a great school out of what otherwise might be­come a prison type institution. Kitagawa, Pot Hutton.Vresidents Message It's the end of another school year and time to laze about in the sun and project our minds back on those things which happened during this term. School spirit between studentst hemselvcs has always been very re­freshing. This healthy attitude is reflected in the exchange of greetings be­tween students and teachers. One doesn't say "hello" to a few, but to every­one he passes. I hope the student body never loses this attitude, because it helps to lighten the cumbersome task of going to school. The kind of school spirit which shows that we are proud of who we are and where we're going rose greatly this year. Although the Students' Council had as many activities as we were allowed, it still was not enough. This year three to four hundred people ct a function was an average, but last year it was about as rare is a blue moon. Some must be reacting! Since most of the grad class won't be back next year, the burden of school affairs falls on the nines, tens and elevens. You can either make or break this school. If you decide to help make it, talk to Mr. Turner often. After all, he's always given the students a fair deal before, why change it now. Thanks for your support last year and we'll see you all in university in a few years. Statesman Message Another school year has drawn to a close and everyday routine occur­rences are now only wonderful memories. The Statesman's purpose is to reflect these memories so they are always fresh in our minds. You should not only remember the happy times, but also the little happenings that make life livable. We hope we have recorded these events so that when you grow older, you can look through this yearbook and it will bring back fond memories. We want to give a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Alvau and Miss Thurston for all the help they have given us in producing this year's Statesman. Thanks also to the photographers for their candid shots (and those who posed for them). We would also like to thank Mr. landeryou for his financial advice. An end to the corofree irresponsibility of schooldays regulated by older, wiser heads. We griped about arbitrary assignments — whot we must do, how we must do it. The decisions were mado for us; our courses were charted, and all we had to do was follow, not lead. And end to the security which this organized little school-world offered, with its cloor-cut and annoying set of rules and comparatively simple distinction between right and wrong. No more will the familiar teachers scold us, lecture us, direct us, help us. An end to old friendships among tcachors as well as students. How many of us will retain the old tics, shore the same thoughts and feelings and hopes? An ond and a beginning — the human race stands at the commencement of a road lead­ing to a whole new world, to many new worlds. Planet earth was man's beginning, his school, his home, and a relatively secure refuge from dangers that he is only starting to appre­ciate. We graduates also stand on the edge of entry into new worlds; this is our beginning. We too will discover hazards we never considered before. Perhaps some of us will face the challenges of frontiers beyond our earth, but each and every one of us will find a personal frontier to challenge. The coveted freodom from supervision is now ours, a frightening free­dom; for if the decisions are ours to make, the consequences arc ours to face. But we shall not go entirely alone. The tools of learning that our teachers tried so pain­fully to give us arc not easily lost. Nor arc memories of past offorts and the results they boro; and how can we forget the consequences of shirking our duties — as painful as some of those memories might be, they are port of our education. And with us will also go the goodwill ond fond (or not so fond) wishes of our teachers. The future lies before us, vague and untouched by our actions. Not all of us know whot we intend to do with — and to — that future. There is much to be done; we are young and eager and still idealistic, unmarked by tho ravages of disillusionment ond cynicism. Wo may help to correct the evils ond tho mistakes of post year; wo may never correct them; we may odd to them instead; but the seeking, not the finding, can be a goal in itself. Yes, an end and a beginning — or is it an end or a beginning? A beginning to edu­cation that can novor come out of dry ond musty textbooks, however admirable those textbooks moy nonetheless be. A beginning to education that comes of life itself. It is up to us to use well those ;hining years ahead, years bright with promise and with youthful dreams. And good fortune to all of us in the fulfillment of those dreams, wherever they may take us! THERESA ICHINO Pcge FourteenCLASS HISTORY For a long, long time now, many of us have eagerly looked forward to the day when we would bo graduating from Grade Twelve. Finally the great day has arrived, and it is on such an occasion that we may enjoy looking bock at the things wo have gone through to reach this goal. In particular, we recall experiences of the recent years *n Winston Churchill High. Probably no one will over forget the big-time gambling at tho Mardi Gras, or watching Mr. Daw sip tea in physics class, or even listening to Dennis McCowon reciting Shake­speare in English class. There were days when smoke drifted lozily through the halls of the high school wing. Usually it did not require an exceptionally sensitive sniffer to determine whether the smoko was coming from the Home Economics room, the Chemistry Lab, or the boys' "can". Everyone thought it was quite a joke when a certain group of fellows would take off a period or two every morning to go for coffee — especially when they got caught, and Chuck Sudoikot was chaperoned to school that afternoon by his mother. We will always remember our personal experiences best of all. Our first visit to "Thorky's" office back in Grade Nine probably cost us more sweat that a hard day's work in a hot sun. On the other hand, the fine times many of us had together on school teams provide for more pleasant memories — both the thrill of winning a close championship gome, and tho tears which could not be held back after we played our hearts out and wero narrowly defeated. Above all, as we look back, we think of that first romance — those rostlcss nights of tossing and turning and sighing passionately on our pillows until we managed to fall asleep in the wee hours of the morning. We shall never forget that day last year whon an energetic, smiling Bob Thompson finally refused to ride his bike to school, but with his hair neatly combed, he preferred to walk — even if she did live a few blocks out of the way. This last year, in particular, has been a good year os for as school spirit is concerned. This boost in spirit has reflected upon the ploying ability of our school teams. The mighty Bulldogs won on even half of their games in a tough football season. In basketball competition, our Griffins finally trounced the L. C. I. Clipper Queens, and the boys' "A" team came very close to winning a game on more than one occasion. Sinccroly, we must admit that we have always hod a fine staff in our school. Some of the teachers wero excellent instructors, some wore close friends to the students, and some of them were just good for laughs. Thus we liked them all, in one way or anothor. There was Mr. londcryou • tho pool shark, and Mr. Effler - tho golfer. Mr. Hamilton loved quoting his poetry; Mrs. Grantham relished writing out misconduct slips; Mr. C. Turner modelled the latest fashions in men's wear; and Mr. 1. Turner shall be remembered for his interesting comments and discussions about s - • ocial studies. Although the comical experiences arc perhaps more easily remembered, I om sure that the more serious episodes of high school life shall also remain in our book of memories. We have learned much in the past three grades of schooling. We have indubitably discovered that our rewards are often in proportion to our efforts. Similarly we have learned to accept responsibility and to work towards a goal. It is with such a goal in mind, and due to diligent efforts that many of us aro here tonight. We have not made it largely by ourselves, however. We must thank Mr. Turner and tho staff for their continued efforts to educate us and prepare for a happy, full life after high school, or for preparing us for fur­ther education. If teachers were not so concerned about us, they would not have ulcers, and Mr. Daw would not have to wear his hand made toque to keep his head warm. Very shortly wo will have to soy farewell to Churchill High, not just for a few months, but forever. I am sure we all feel very thankful for all tho good times wo hove had together. In years to come wo shall indi­vidually choose our own pathways in life. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, mechanics, laborers — it will be inter­esting to see who will be what. When members of this graduating class and other graduating classes moot in future years (and I hope we shall, especially at alumni meetings), I om sure our thoughts will carry us back to those priceless experiences we shared in our truly "dear old Churchill High". Donna Baceda Donno's future plans include at­tending t.J.C. next year. She is "peeved'* by dirty sneakers. Her activities include C.G.I.T., a job ond teaching Sunday School. Dennis Bogusky Dennis, a member of ihe basket­ball. football, badminton, hockey and fastball teams and of the Orchestra ond Trampoline Club, plans to attend the L.J.C. His philosophy is — One in the hand is worth two in the bush. Sandra Brummitt future plons for Sondy include university. French is her pet peeve and her favorite saying is "Oh nol I went through another stop sign." Her activities include work and o sorority. Shirley Capron To poss chemistry is Shirley's am­bition. She plans on attending U.C., then U.A.C. to become a teacher. Activities include teach­ing dancing, and working. "You're kidding," is her fovoritc saying. P a g e Six tee n Darryl Asplund Darryl's future plans include tak­ing a holiday. Achievements—not many, "live ond let live", is his philosophy. Activities include hockey, football and baseball. Dawn Bennett To bo o passenger agent for Air Canada is Dawn's ambition but first she plans to work os a stenographer. She works on the school paper and her pet peeve it writing poetry. "The amount of work you put in. is the credit you get out." it her philosophy. Diane Brandle Diono would like to go to Toron­to or Edmonton. "Really" is her favorite saying while her pet peeve is two-faced friends. Diane's philosophy is "You con hove any­thing you want. All you have to do is wont it bod enough." She belongs to the school chorus ond newspaper. La Donna Callfas Donna it planning to go into nurses training after sho finishes school. Her pet peeve it stuck up slobs. Sho it a N.Y.P.S. lead­er. Her philosophy it "A person's reputation does not depend on whol he it going to do." Sharon Chapman Sharon, who plans to otlend the Alberto Bible College in Calgary, achieved Grade IX honors ond received the highest marks in Math ond Science 20. She is an active member in choir and hor philoso­phy is "Don't worry — everything will turn out."Stan Chervinski 8csebo!l, motorcycles, can and girls (in that ordor) ore Stan's favorite activities. He plans to work for a year and then go to university, ond hit favorite toying is "What's that blonde's name?" Susan Cook Boring movies and snobs ore our Sweetheart Princess' pet peeves end curling ond M.R. are her fa- vorito activities. She plans to attend N.A.I.T. after graduating, specifically. Dietary Service Tech­nology. Robert Coutts Bob's future plons ore undecided. His pet peeve is homework and his activities include parties, pool, etc. Mis philosophy is, "If you can't take it easy, take it anyway." Hazel Dahl Hazel's pet peeves ore home­work ond stuck up boys. Her ac­tivities include tennis, houselcogue, N.Y.P.S. and sports in general. She plans to attend the C.N.C. College in Winnipeg ond her phil­osophy — "You're just os gcod os the next person." Marilyn Doughty "Live and let live" is Marilyn's philosophy ond her favorite saying is — I doubt it. Her activities include sorority and homework ond she plans o career in nursing at St. Michael's Hospital. Ed Cole Ed, o future- banker, activities in­clude football, hockey ond look­ing at girls. His achievement is getting through school ond his favorite saying is — "You're out of your tree." Joyce Coutts Joyce plans to do secretarial work in Lethbridge. Her pet peevo is the tenth period class and her favorite saying is "Goad Lordl" Activities include docoroting com­mittee, basketball ond bowling. Wendy Cowan Wendy is planning on attending the Mount Royal Junior College. Her pet peevo is "Now Kiddies" (by C. Turner). Her activities in­clude curling and sorority. "All is fair in love and war," is her philosophy. Willy DeJager Willy keeps herself busy in house- league and Young People's So­ciety. She plans to become a lab technician and her pet peevo is studying. Veronica Drinkell Veronica plons to attend the Loth- bridge Junior College. She can always be heard to soy "Oh." Philosophy —A smile is the best way to mark someone in. Pat Evins This yeor, Pot belongs to the school chorus and school paper. In the future, she plans to attend university. Her pet peeve is tenth period classes. Bill Ferby Bill, who plans to work or go back to school, dislikes big cars with slow drivers. His activities include pool, sleeping end cars, and his philosophy is — Do not do what you do not want to do. Pat Freeman Pot would like to work with A.G.T. Homework is her pet peeve. Her philosophy — put off everything until tomorrow. Activities—work. Terry Godsalve Terry's plans are undecided. "Don't get too smart is his favorite say­ing." Pool, baseball, and football ore his favorite pastimes. Brian's favorite saying is "It oil depends on whether you walk to school or take your lunch." He is the president of Young People's and ho enjoys folk singing and climbing. Martha Feenstra Mortha's favorite saying is "Yes sir?" Her pet peeve is peoplo who fell her Africa is no place for her. Activities include Track and field Club, I.S.C.F., Young People's Society, Sunday School teacher and school paper. Leonard Flexhaug "Flex" plans to go to the Edmon­ton Tech and his pet peeve is McConnell. The Hoochmongers take up most of his time. Donna Galambos Donna plans to go to Edmonton to work. Her favorite saying is "Son of o snake," and her brothers and homework are her pet peeves. Philosophy—work on your own. Don Going Don plans to work at the A.G.T. and his activities, liko many Grade Twelves, include cars, girls and pool. His pet peovo is homework and snobby girls. Connie Hall Connie's fulur© plans include tak­ing a Medical-Dental Secretarial course of the Junior College. Her favorite saying is — "Givo my Seagram's pencil case bock!" As cn achievement, Connie was awarded the D. R. Yates Scholar­ship. Laurie Harding Laurie plans to take an I.8.M. machine course at the LJ.C. Her pet peeve is getting in and out of cars with o tight skirt on. laurio, a students' council trea­surer, and finds time for piano, school paper, curling and sorority. Margaret Henderson Morg, whose futuro plans are undecided, enjoys sewing. Her pet peeve is largo exams. Phil­osophy — "Everyono should have a high school diploma." Richard Hirotsu After groduoting, Richard plans on attending the Calgary Tech. His pet peeve is English. Philosophy— "Do os little work as possiblo and get away with It." Donna plans on attending Bible School a* Prairio Bible Institute. Activities include choir, youth group, piano and teaching swim­ming. Mark Hall Art teachers and resistance aro Mark's pet peeves. Ho is plan­ning to fake Veterinary Medicine at 6.Y.U. His activities indudo art and hunting. Philosophy — "Enjoy life; you only live once." Bev Hegland Bcv's moin activities are home­work and synchronized swimming. She has won swimming awards and plans to become o nurses' aide. Favorite saying — "Just like that!"
