Shaw once wrote, "Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future gen­erations." I feel this expresses the thought of every teacher on the Staff. We are justly proud of each and every teacher on our Staff. It is with much reluctance that one must announce that some of our teachers are leaving our school. At the time of writing this message, we have the word that Miss V Gray and Miss M. Clark are transferring to the Wilson Junior High School and the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute respectively Mr R. Lindsay is leaving the profession entirely and is engaging in another business. Mrs. R. Daw also plans to leave the profession. To these teachers we bid farewell, wishing them the best of luck in their future plans. To the new teachers, Miss J. Curry Mr C. Harvey Mr R. Erickson, Mrs. A. Thibault and Mr. D. Newton, we extend a hearty welcome and hope they will enjoy working in our school. I am sure all teachers and students are looking forward to the new school year with the hope it will be another milestone in the history of this junior high school. To Mr George Watson and his Yearbook Committee, the Staff and students join me in saying "Thank You" for another excellent annual. Such books as this are not produced without much time and effort. Finally to our students leaving to advance their education by at­tending High School, we have the hope that they have received the necessary fundamental education that will serve them well throughout their lifetime. May they all appreciate the thought expressed in the following- "Life itself can't give you joy Unless you really will it. Life just gives you time of space— It's up to you to fill it." GEORGE C. McLELlAN TREASURER After a long and enjoyable vacation, school got back in full swing early in September. The school elections were one of the first activities in thte new term. These were preceded by a vigorous and colorful campaign and the nominees' speeches, all of which were well spoken and contained a pleasant tang of amusement. The voting was very close and those elected to the Students' Coun­cil are the persons appearing in the above picture. Mr. Watson ,as always, was on hand to help the Executive over the rocky spots encountered through the term and he had his hands full trying to keep the proposals of the Council's more excitable members down to a sensible level. Three other faithful advisors were Miss James, Mrs. Sutherland and Mr. McKenzie, who, equipped with their superior knowledge and experience, kept us in check.LETHBRIDGE PUBL C SCHOOL BOARD, 1954 L. Our Schools Are Good Schools During the past year there has been some criticism and much discussion of Canadian school systems. People, well- meaning but often ill-informed, have been extremely critical. However, there are some facts that cannot be overlooked. Today our schools do a more effective job of teaching the basic skills. Our books are better, we have more materials and we know more about the individual student than was known thirty years ago. Today we retain more students in school. No longer do large numbers of our students drop out of school at the end of Grade Eight. Now nearly all our Grade Nine students continue on to Senior High School. Today we have large, modern, well-equipped schools in­stead of the inadequate school plants of the past. Today we pay much attention to vocational education. Most of our students will have to go to work soon after leaving high school. Our shorthand, typewriting, bookkeeping, home economics, woodworking, metals, automotive and electrical de­partments enable our students to develop saleable skills. Today we offer our pupils a much richer and more varied program of studies and activities. Dramatics, economics, geol­ogy personal development, law psychology social studies, sociology have been added to our high school curriculum, Extra-curricular activities are now an important part of our pro­gramme. Today there is a much closer relationship between the school and the home. Home and School Associations, parent- teacher conferences make for close co-operation in the interests of the pupil. Today we utilize motion pictures, filmstrips, radios and tape- recorder to make teaching more effective. Today we are deeply concerned with those who require special instruction. Opportunity classes, junior divisions in the primary grades, classes for New Canadians enable our teachers to offer instruction suited to the needs of the individual pupil. Today our schools are continuously attempting to improve the quality of their services while keeping pace with the phyi- cal demands made by greatly increased enrolments. During the past year the Lethbridge Public School system increased its expenditure from $678,000 to $780,000. Its enrolment went from 2276 to 2656 in the elementary schools, from 726 to 815 in the junior high grades, and from 503 to 556 in the senior high school. It appears that this annual increase of 500 students will continue for many years. As the city grows so will its schools. The Home and School Association The Hamilton Junior High Home and School Association welcomes the opportunity of being able to outline the work of the association for the past year, in the school yearbook. The Program Chairman had arranged some interesting programs. The program was arranged by the teachers of Hamilton Junior High and the themes for discussion were "High Marks, "So What"; "Atti­tudes, How Important"; Health, Social Adjustment and Char­acter Building; a panel discussion by teachers and parents on problems and lack of adolesence, which proved very interesting. Open house was held at Hamilton Junior High, displaying hobbies of parents along with displays of class, shop and home economics work, which attracted a very large crowd of par­ents and friends. The displays were held during a regular meeting of Ham­ilton Junior High Home and School Association, which also featured addresses by L. H. Bussard, Superintendent of City Schools ,and Mrs. Asplund of the Home and School Association. A presentation of framed pictures of Their Majesties was made by Mrs. Owen Williams of the I.O.D.E. and a program of entertainment was held by the students. The following after­noon parents were able to visit the schoolrooms during class and see how the teachers went about their work. Following all meetings a social half-hour was spent, and parents chatted with the teachers over their coffee. The Home and School Association expresses its thanks to the students, teachers and parents for a very successful school year-^— i ..... . ■■ ■ n m him FIRE DRILL GIRLS' TECH FIRE DRILL Valedictory By LORNA BLACKBOURNE I am highly honored at having the privilege of giving the Valedictory of the Graduating Class of 1954. Tonight we mark a very important milestone in our edu­cational career. We are now leaving our carefree Junior High days behind us and are preparing to enter High School. Let us pause in a brief moment of reflection and ask ourselves "What has Hamilton Junior High meant to us?" Three years have sped by since we, an awestruck group of Grade Seven student entered the unfamiliar doors of Ham­ilton Junior High. We have come a long way since those first uncertain days in Grade Seven—for during our brief stay at Hamilton, we have developed pride and love for our school. At first, perhaps, we found it hard to join with students who had formerly come from rival elementary schools. But as we shared the fun of our dances, parties and club activities, and together endured the hard work of our classes and exams, we all became friends, each contributing in his own way to­wards the common good of our school. And in so doing, we have learned how to get along with fellow students in a big school, and we have developed, we hope to some degree, poise and self-assurance. Not only has our school life in Hamilton Junior High pro­vided for us friendly activities. We have gained power through knowledge which we crammed into our small heads—or per­haps I should say had crammed into them by our patient teachers. In whatever activities we did, in whatever knowledge we gained, there have always been people behind us, urging us on. Perhaps at times we did not show appreciation to them for their efforts. Perhaps our teen-age quirks seemed pitiful and hope­less. But we know that without the teachers we would not have come even this far. So, to the teachers we pay special tribute for their patient guidance and assistance throughout these many years. Time past blends into time present, and time present fuses into time future. Our experiences at Hamilton will always be a part of us, and as we move along into time future, we know we will constantly reflect on Hamilton Junior High as a school that gave us much of permanent worth and value. With these few words, we bid our Hamilton Junior High our fond farewell. TOAST TO SCHOOL BOARD Members of the School Board, Administrators, Ladies and Gentlemen and Fellow Students: To me has fallen the great honor of proposing the toast to the School Board and Administrators. First of all, I should say that I feel too much importance cannot be placed on the wonderful job these people are doing, and that all the benefits from their labors are derived by us, the students. But we, as students, often fail to think of all the work and time that is put forth to make possible our getting an educa­tion today It is through the efforts of people such as these that we are able to enjoy this high standard of education. I believe that we, as students, should give a little more thought as to what goes on behind the scenes in the adminis­tration of our school. I feel we should not only do this once a year but periodically throughout the year. So, fellow students, I feel we owe these people a great debt. In a small way of showing our appreciation, I ask you all to rise and raise your glasses in tribute and toast to a fine group of people. A DAY WITH ROOM 27 Any tour of H.J.H. would be incomplete without a visit to Room 27 As you enter, completely disregard the sign over the door which reads, ''Abandon hope all ye who enter here.'' You will soon realize we have a wonderful but unusual class. Here you will find Bill Lingard, Vice-President of the Students' Council, and Bev Umber, one of the successful contestants at the Music Festival. Take one busy morning typical of the general proceedings. The students of the room are busily collecting the chewed up pencils, bubble gum and the like that they will need during the morning; there's the bell and we're off! It's Room 27 out in front as we pour down the stairs and into Room 14 for another session of Math. We are blessed with many mathematicians such as Algebraic Knight, Minus Truman, Concentric Marsden, and Equilateral Johnson, to mention a few into whose heads Mr. Miller has been trying to pound some Math, for the past year. Mr. Miller has been a wonderful teacher with a great sense of humor. Once again the bell rings, and this time we are off to Room 25 for Social Studies and Language, taught by Mr. Aoki. At the first of the year he seemed quite sane, but around Easter he cracked up (he got married). This was a bad example of self-control for our women-haters, Bouwsema, Kendall and Schan. All joking aside, some of our brilliant students, Mic Domeier, Blondy Forster and Cutie Cosgrove show up well in this period. Again the bell rings and we're off to H. and P.D., taught by Mr. MacKenzie. Here Karen Dewar tries her hand at de­fining manners but does she know what it's all about? Here also we discuss the new unit on alcohol education, but when Fran Hodges starts to "hie" it is very misleading. The next period we spend with Mr. Ede, our Science teach­er. He gives us a number of diagrams and experiments, but ambitious Don Wells has cartoons where he should have dia­grams. Some of our scientists-to-be are Pat Lyall, Joan Shreeve and Barbara Pratte. Among our other subjects is Community Economics—a spe­cial subject given only to us. Everyone looks forward to our two periods a week with Mr. Dewar. Some people, such as Linda Beerling and Sharon Lunde, are naturally brainy in this subject. Then there's Literature, taught to us in our home room by Mrs. Sutherland. She politely overlooks any loud outburst from the back of the room as it is likely Peter Stasiuk who is al­lowed five words a period after paying half his library fine— or it may be Vicious Belzberg and Dead-Eye Santa at it again. Phys. Ed. is a relief to the boys from the rigors of the hot schoolroom, although it isn't much of a relief for Mr. Lindsay When we get too out-of-hand, he soon gives us some exercises which fag us out. Mr. Lindsay is really a lot of fun and we enjoy Phys. Ed. Our girls enjoy two periods weekly under the iron hand of Mrs. Daw We are proud of Marianne Snowdon, who was captain of the All Stars, and Marlene Court, who took track and field honors. Our shop instructor is Mr. Jordan, a good teacher and a big help to us. Shop is where the male populace of Room 27 really shines, especially Kong Lee and Bob Scott. Bev Maughn, one of the better cooks, has accomplished the impossible in Home Ec. this year by actually learning to boil water without burning it. Our teacher, Miss Gray showed her good sportsmanship when she overlooked nearly being drowned by Elaine Bluekins when the washing machine went on the rampage. Thanks, Miss Gray for a fun-filled year. In typing, taught by Mr. Block, Room 27 excels. During the year Bev Umber set a new record of 273 words per minute. How that girl can talk. "Fingers" Jackson also gives the rest of us some stiff competition. Jean Tudor, Maurice Hawley, Sydney Chow Hemming Chew and Phil Armour, finding school was no place for them, said, "Parting is such sweet sorrow " and skipped merrily down the steps of H.J.H. for the last time. We wish them luck! This, our last year in Hamilton Junior High, will never be forgotten by any of us. WATSON—The Plymouth is the best, so Mr. Watson says. MR. STEAD—A teacher who finds it pleasant to smile and have fun. MR. BLOCK—Always on the "look-out" for gum-chewers, and truly a fine typing teacher. MRS. SUTHERLAND—Through her fine efforts we have man­aged to learn some literature. MISS KUNST—This well taught course was enjoyed by all, espe­cially the unit on alcohol. MR. LINDSAY—He makes the boys men, and the men cripples! MRS. DAW—Truly a physical director with a fine personality and a pleasing smile. MISS GRAY—Immensely enjoyed by all the boys on their big day at Home Ec. MR. JORDAN—Always ready with a joke and full of "know­how" for making useful things. MR. KNILL—He has a talent for art and made our year so pleasant. Laughter filled the room and then silence In walked Mr. Sillito, our home room teacher, and introduced himself. That started a new term full of fun and embarrassing moments, our last year at Hamilton (we hope). After a few weeks, the school elections were held. When the numerous speeches and careful voting by the student body were over and the results finally announced, we found that two of the successful candidates were in our room; President Jerry Oates and Treasurer Rita Nakagama. The basketball season started, and after try-outs and elim­inations, we found that our room was represented by Allan Gold on the boys' All-Star team, and Gloria Insull on the girls' All-Star team. With basketball underway, other sports also came—such as bowling. Eileen Charlton won the girls' championship, and Ron Eckstrom deserves mention for his sportsmanship during the season. Numerous clubs were also formed, and some of these are: the Pep Club, Radio Club, Paper Staff. Many of the students of our room took part in these activities. They are: PEP CLUB—Lorraine Oliver, Carol Woolley Barbara Steed. RADIO CLUB—Burry Foss. PAPER STAFF—Stan Benjamin, Lorraine Oliver, Carol Wol- ley Barbara Steed, Rita Nakagama. In the Girls' House League basketbal were: Rita Naka­gama, Eileen Charlton, Terry Peters, Jerry Salomon. In the Boys' House League basketball were: Jerry Oates, Dave Bauer, Valentine Dong, Fred Reagh, Jim McElgunn, Rob­ert Forrest, Dennis Jones. These clubs all enjoyed a very successful season and the students from our room who participated in the activities wish at this time to thank the teachers and all others who helped organize them. It seems that the weeks flew by and the Christmas holidays arrived. After enjoying a very necessary holiday we came back to the "Halls of Learning" and settled down to study for the forthcoming Easter exams. With Spring arriving it seems that the boys of our room took to wheels. They were Max Davies and Terry Wagler with motorcycles and Jack Quan with his dad's car. JACK DEWAR Jake is quite a character, Jack is his real name.
