We who graduate this term may do so a bit reluc­tantly as we shall miss the opportunity of attending this new school and of breaking it in. We leave this task to the first group of graduates of the new L.C.I. Life after our carefree days at the Collegiate will be different. We leave our school with it friends, homework, report cards, pranks on teacher \ and detention to make a new life and new acquaintances in a world different from that with which we are familiar. University awaits some, while others will go job seeking. No matter what we are doing, we shall remember the L.C.I. Do not smear the book of your life to such an extent that people will be ashamed to read it, but be diligent and strive to keep it clean and white. Do not give the impression that we come from some backward school; let everyone know that you learned something at the Collegiate and that you know the ways and means of putting to practice what you have learned. Do not be too readily influenced by would-be well-wishers who tell us to do this and to do that. Excessive haste does not always pay as it may cause us to choose the road leading to failure rather than leading to success. Think over your indi­vidual problems carefully and do not make your choice too hastily. The Year Book tries to bring to you a condensation of everything that went on in the school during the year. Between its covers is a reservoir of thought. When we take on age. we may live again in youth, just by rereading our year books. In recollection we will see our old friends, our many trips to Chris’s, basketball games, social functions, and the teachers whom we victimized in our many jokes. In your mind all these will live again. Finally, I would like to thank all those connected in any way with the publication of the school Annual. This project is made possible by our hard­working advisor, Mr. Rea; the year book staff; the faculty; many Lethbridge business establishments; and by student co-operation. ALBERT JcKENTAPage Four THE SPOTLITE” whr principal i>pealiB THIS is the last issue of the Spotlite of the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute which will be produced in this building. It marks the end of the chapter covering a period of twenty-two years when the high school was housed here. With the opening of the fall term, the senior students will find themselves in a fine new Collegiate, one of the best high schools in the province, a tribute to the progressiveness of the School Board, the parents and the citizens of Lethbridge. In these new surroundings new courses in Woodwork, Arts, and Home Economics will give further opportunity to follow modern trends in education. As we survey the past years of our Collegiate we recall that time has borne us through an economic depression followed by war, which cast its shadow across many homes represented in this school. Our record is forcibly indicated by the Honor Roll in our halls, bearing testimony to all in the services, and especially those who gave their lives in defence of our way of life. Through the years, many staff members have come and gone or retired. It may not be until some future time that the students will comprehend the service and influence of these faithful instructors, upon their lives, yet how richly they deserve a place in our honor roll of memories. The students occupy their niche as well. Through the years a fine group of boys and girls have passed out of school emerging capable, self-reliant, and eager to take their place in society. Some have achieved outstanding success in a wide variety of fields and we are all very proud of them. To each of us. leaving the building, memories will be different, but it is so natural to remember the pleasant times—the dances, parties, skating, bowling and curling, to the exclusion of the weary hours of homework and study. It is hoped the pleasant memories will far outweigh the others for us all. These memories will give us the incentive to go on to our new future with confidence and trust. May I add a word of congratulation to the students and their advisor, Mr. Rea, for the production of a fine Year Book, and also a word of encourage­ment to all students that they may always find some such worthy activity to engage their leisure hours. It is a great occasion for most of us because it is nearing the time we shall lay down our high school work for all time. But in reality, every­thing that marks an end, also marks a beginning. The end of one task, the beginning of a new one. The tree blossoms, bears fruit, sheds its foliage and immediately begins preparations for another season. So it is with our education. What we have learned at school, valuable as it is. constitutes only a beginning. The end of our school work merely means the beginning of certain experiences which will put to the test the principles we have learned here. At this time I think it is only fitting that we should pay tribute to Mr. Kyle and the entire staff who have guided us in our quest for education. They have worked very conscientiously with us, and their lot (like the policeman in Gilbert and Sullivan’s immortal operetta) has not always been a happy one. Youth training is not the easiest job in the world as any of our teachers can verify. Whether or not you have benefitted from all the advantages of the year’s work you have just fin­ished is a matter between you and your own con­science. From now on you must rely more and more on your own efforts. The good and success you derive from your college course or work will depend entirely upon you. Let us picture our lives as a road. Up to this time the road has been very straight and seemingly very long. We have been able to look back and also sec what is ahead. Now we have come to a bend in the road. We can still look back and see our successes and failures, but now they don’t en­tice us to look back as they used to. The bend in the road is the big question mark. What is around it? Where does it lead to? No one can answer these questions but ourselves. Right now we are in the position to be able to push ourselves around the bend onto the right path or just stay on the bend and wait another year for the answer. The end of the year means different things to each of us. To all of us it means the end of four years' hectic, hard work; another milepost on the educational journey. Some of us look forward to another four years of higher education at some uni­versity or college, while others are going right out into the business world. Each one of us will be striving to become an expert or authority on his own chosen work so that we will be bound to succeed. The story is told of a doctor who was driving through a village when lie saw a crowd gathered around a man whose dog was performing tricks. The doctor stopped and watched the exhibition for a few minutes, then he said: "My good man, how do you train your dog? I can't teach mine a single trick.” The man looked up with a grin. "Well, it’s this way,” lie said, “you have to know more’n the dog or you can’t learn him nothing." That man was right. Today, every one of us should be constantly striving to know more abou*. our future occupations. As you stop and look about you, ye shall observe many great and wonderful things which have transpired. Rising before you. as eternal as the morning dew, ye shall see the judgment seat, wherein will be the all-wise master of all, Mr. Kyle. On his right hand, sharing in his goodness and glory, sits Tom Davies, while on his left, only slightly less glorified, sits Steve Raz. As the sun peeks its face over the rim of the horizon we see one of those rightfully famous “hen parties'” still in session. Jean “Torchy” Pitcher, the Goddess of Fire, is holding court. The nine muses —Shirley Ridalls, Georgina Lynch, Evelyn Petrunia, Lois McDermott, Kay Russell, Elsie Tominuk, Louise Determan, Helen Afaganis and Shirley Jackson sur­round her, intently watching Delores “Terpsichore” Corenblum give them a demonstration of her art. You know Terpsichore: I am Terpsichore, I am the Goddess of Song and Dance, I put the ants in the dancer’s pants. Immediately following this discourse on that classical art, Myrtle “Kalliope" Baceda raises her sweet voice to ask if Terpsichore will please remove her bulk elsewhere as Betty “Thalia” Peterson wants to demonstrate her accomplishments in the field of comic art. From this we turn only to be confronted by Colleen “Hekate” Anderson zealously guarding the home of Flapper Joan “Cutic” Murdoch and Ken Supina from revenue collectors, Robert “Blackboard” McCue and “Gorry" Gary Ursenbach. These rev­enues together with certain other forced contribu­tions furnish them with abundant maintenance. This friendly little war is interrupted by the arrival of courier Ray “Fleet-feet” Archer bearing glad tidings of Steve "Ulysses” Gryschuck who has just won vic­tory over Jack McMillan, the last barrier in his fight for the fair Lady Frances McLeod. Lady McLeod rewards him with one of her timely fainting spells and falls into the arms of her handmaidens—Babs Young, Peggy Richardson, Florence Tuff and Isobel Townsend. Victor ‘‘Cure-or-Kill" O'Connell is sum­moned and promptly arrives in his wheel chair pushed by his faithful coolie, Albert JeKenta. Along about noon all the gloom is dispelled by the appearance of a very strange company. In the lead is George “Level-head” Fletcher doing cartwheels and all the while chanting that choice piece of Eng­lish literature: "Juliet, Juliet, wherefore art thou Juliet?” Following this are several no less enter­taining characters, Cyril Hoult and Wesley Shoo- bert, prancing along with their arms about each other, not so much from love as from a long life of pocket-picking. Bringing up the rear of this strange procession is the organ grinder, mighty John “Nin’- Paterson, who is the sharpener of weapons in war and the protector of mankind in peace. He is fol­lowed closely by a group of scholarly people, Una Roy, Joyce Scott, Louella Tetreau, June Kemper, Jim Nicas and Bob Cameron. They are speaking in languages scarcely known to anyone. Included in these dead languages are French and Latin, known to have been taught in the old L.C.I. back in 1950. A procession of elephants and men attracts our attention as the Goddess of Love, Joan “Venus” Dafoe, comes within range. The rest of the train is formed by runners-up in the contest. These in­clude Lois Head. Nancy Davidson, Arlene Green, Jean Miers, Dorothy Jarvie, Enola McCuaig and Pat Schweitzer. Each of the contestants has her own musical instrument of almost every conceivable pat­tern. The attitude of the player is carefully delin­eated. To become the new Venus is a prize worth working for. This touching scene is interrupted by the cheer­ing of the seven wonders of the world—Joan Robin­son, Gloria Dodd, Phyllis Goodlad, Arlene Hanson. Nellie Kazokas, Valerie Mercer, and Laverne Cun­ning. Their ship has just been successfully steered past such pitfalls as Ron Chapman, Jack Clcmis, Brian Haig and Don Lingard, and who should be at the helm but Robert William “Hercules” Russell! A great furore comes up from the shore as they are welcomed by the nose-counting officer, Lynn Hol- royd, who immediately hustles them off to the site of the famous Birs Mimrud or the so-called Tower"THE SPOTLITE" Page Nine of Babel. Here the antiquaries, Jim Nisbet and Hans Schawalder, are each trying to convince them that there are no stairways or other means of ascend­ing to the top of the tower. Jean Stark solves the argument by forcibly removing Hans from the scene leaving Jim to his own peaceful conclusions. Twilight is creeping upon us, but verily, there is yet another scene I must view before darkness descends. It is, yes, none other than Gerry Asplund, the philosophically minded one. who is converting the phonetic type writing to the pictorial (hiero­glyphic). Geraldine Horne is strongly protesting; she insists that more than one interpretation can be given to a picture. Gordon "Knot-head” Duthie and Ken "Can't-kill" Atkinson whiz past on their yet-propelled bikes. A group of inhabitants from Mars—Minoru Tak- ada, Miiko Nagata, James Dacyszyn. Eleanor Adams, Albert Opstad, Dorothy O'Connell. Lillian Scott and Lois Wuotilla, collect to watch open- mouthed as a rocket full of Moon Dwellers consist­ing of Don Dailey, Euphemia Rider, Bob Barker, Blanche Poulsen, Gloria Kabayama and Diane Ward flits by. Georgie Hurst tears past closely followed by Byron Horlacher who is shooting off atomic fire­crackers. Now the curtain of darkness is rung down by Ruth Shield and Gwen Langston. Yea, verily, we shall see the day when each will respond to the L.C.I. teachings in his own way. The work which has been accomplished by our teachers will manifest itself in the leading minds of the uni­verse by an uttered prophecy, a chanted poem, or, explained in verse, the nature, the origin, the reason for the world, as he was moved thereto by the vary­ing moods of his mind. Since then the executive has worked hard and steady in the interests of the school. Special praise is due the individual members, not only for the splendid way they have co-operated but also for the work they have accomplished. As this is the final term for most of them, they have been most heavily burdened with their studies and assignments. The success that attended the work of the execu­tive may be attributed to the willingness of each individual member of the executive to do his or her share of the work, to the co-operation they gave to the higher officials on the staff, to the helpful con­tributions from the teaching staff and to the co­operation of the school. The executive were indeed fortunate in having as staff representative, Mr. Blackbourne, whose wide experience with student activities of former years proved very helpful. He was always willing to assist in whatever way lie possibly could, and his assistance was very much appreciated by all. If the student body had not done this, the efforts of the executive would have proved futile. They were always ready to carry out their part in what­ever the executive did. We may say. in closing, that the executive of this term laid a secure foundation upon which the execu­tives of future years can build.
