I extend to our year book staff sincere thanks and appreciation for the commendable job undertaken in its publication. This laudable edition has recorded by words and pictures the history of the Collegiate Institute for the past school year. I hope that as you peruse its content in later years, it will recall many happy memories. One of the major functions of a high schooi is to educate students to act respons­ibly. It is easier for us to drift with events rather than resist. That is why Democracy is often replaced by Dictatorship. "The fault . . . lies not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings." The degree of your success in life, of your social acceptance, and of your freedom, is largely determined by the degree to which you accept responsibilities. On several occasions during the school year faculty members have noted the praiseworthy attitude of our students. Evidently, they have perceived with satisfaction that you are carrying out the responsbiilities required of you by the Collegiate Institute. This involves positive decisions on your part regarding your homework, punctuality, attendance and general deportment. Our school has not stifled your liberty by a mass of restrictions. This happy situation exists because of your acceptance of responsibility. On behalf of the L. C. This popular teacher taught language, literature and French, and took a keen interest in the Junior Red Cross. Mr. and Mrs. Bond are now residing in Calgary. PATERSON On April 11 # 1964, Dr. G. C. Paterson, a pioneer educator of Lethbridge, passed away. His personal dedication to the betterment of humanity will be sadly missed by all. Teaching was his first calling, and upon entering low, he did not lose interest in education. Shortly after Dr. Patorson began practicing law in Lethbridge, his abilities in the field of education were realized and sought. He served continuously with the Lethbridge Public School Board and was elected to many other high-ranking offices in education. Ho was nominated *for the chancellorship of the University of Alberto and served two years on the Senate of the University. In 1960, the University of Alberta awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Law. That same year the Alberto Teachers' Association honored him with a Life Membership in the Association. An honorary membership in the Alberta Association for Retarded Children was another award cherished by Dr. Paterson. There ore three structures of education that stand as monuments to Dr. Paterson's efforts in Lethbridge. The Lethbridge Junior College, the first of its kind in Canada, represents the fulfillment of his most cherished dream. The Dorothy Gooder School for Retarded Children symbolizes another project in which Dr. Patorson took a leading role. Gratitudo for his outstanding efforts, lies in the naming of Gilbert Paterson Elementary and Junior High School in his honor. Those honors and institutions ore everlasting memorials to a man who earned this recognition through profound dedication to our educational system. We shall not forget. Systematic work habits will "ice yon one foot up on the ladder of success. From those who will put forth the extra effort will come the top executives of tomorrow. TAKE TIME TO THINK: it is the source of power. Ask yourself these questions? Am / lazy; does my comfort come before my work? Am l a coaster; do 1 depend upon others to get the job done? Do I engage in self-pity; am / the one who never gets the breaks? Perhaps you are dragging an anchor. TAKE TIME TO PLAY: it is the secret of perpetual youth. Develop skills and interests hi activities which will occasionally take your mind of your work. Active participation in games is an investment in mental and physical well-being that you cannot afford to be without. TAKE TIME TO READ: it is the fountain of wisdom. by exposing yourself to the ideas of others, you will put yourself ahead of those who depend upon their experience (done. Recreation will come from those books which lift you from the realities of everyday life. TAKE TIME TO BE FRIENDLY: it is the road to happiness. Those around you seek friendship. Take an interest in their activities, and when you need a friend you will not be alone. TAKE TIME TO DREAM: it is hitching your wagon to a star. Assess your interests, abilities and opportunities, then dream of the position toward which you are moving and for an inspirational push read about Thomas F.dison, Helen Keller, Marie Currie, Louis Pasteur and others who never looked back. They asked only for the opportunity to move ahead. Page Savon President's Message ALLEN ROLFE It has been the aim of the 1963 • 64 Students' Council to bring to the students opportunities for fun, fellowship and recreation. We feel that our dances, football and basketball games, and other activities have certainly served this purpose and we are gratified at the support given by the students of the L. C. I. Inter-mural activities were more popular than ever this year, and students turned out in great numbers to participate in basketball, volleyball, tumbling, badminton and other sports. Marked interest was shown in the newly-organized World Affairs Club, and good support continued in the clubs already established. A special vote of thanks is extended to the staff members and students who made these organizations so successful. Radio broadcasting over CHEC was also introduced this year and the L. C. I. editions of Campus Directory were always entertaining. Now, from the elected representatives, the room represen­tatives, and our Council Advisor, Mr. Robin, may I express our appreciation for the privilege of serving you this year. As you leaf through the pages of this book, now and in future years, we hope you will be reminded of friendships made, activities enjoyed, and incidents experienced in the classroom. For the graduating students, this year marks the culmination of twelve memorable years. Like past and future graduates, we are about to take our place in an adult world. What success we achieve in all our future endeavors will depend on our ability to utilize the past twelve years of training. In the coming years we will be con­fronted with many challenges that will test our sense of responsibil­ity, our character, our qualities of leadership, and our sense of right and wrong — our educational system and home training have pre­pared us well, and we have been conditioned to clear these hurdles with confidence. For the enthusiasm and hard work of the Spotlite staff, I would like to express my thanks. There are also several students who, though not on the staff, have contributed to the yearbook. It is to all of these interested individuals and to our advisor that I would like to add a special note of appreciation in recognition of their worth­while efforts. Miss MacEachern has been teaching in Lethbridge. In this time sho has never been absent for one day due to illness. After all these years, she has decided to retire. Her plans for retirement include a great deal of travel. Although Miss MacEachern is not originally a lethbridgite, she has spent most of her life here in our fair city. After taking her elementary education in Control School, she attended the Lethbridge High School, which was located in the old Bowman School. Miss MacEachern then went to Normal School in Calgary, where sho took a teacher training course. The following three years she taught in Coloman. Her teaching career then took her to Wakefield, England on a teacher exchange program. After her trip abroad, she returned to Coleman, and on February 1, 1925, Miss MacEachorn came to Lethbridge. This was the beginning of her teaching career in this city. While teaching in Galbraith, Bowman, and Central Schools, in the elementary grades. Miss MacEachern obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Ever since that time sho has been teaching in the Collegiate, first teaching Social Studios and language and then just specializing in English. Miss MacEachcrn's plans for the immediate future include a year's visit to Britain and the Continent. The students wish her "Bon Voyage" and a happy retirement. StofF ond fellow Groduonds: Moy I first express my appreciation for hoving been chosen Valedictorian for tho Graduating Closs of 1963 • 64. Valedictory — What does this word mean? I must od- mit that when I first looked ot it I was parried. The dic­tionary defines valedictory os a time of farewell, a time for looking bock. It is then, I expect, my duly to look bock on our lost twelve years of hord labour. This is, however, olso a tinvj to look forword. It strikes me os impossible to soy farewell to something without greeting something else. Hence to me valedictory tokes on o double meaning. let us think for a moment of life os o mountain ond of us os mountaineers. We hove been climbing for seventeen years. Whot hove we accomplished? let us rest for a moment, glance down from our lofty perch ond retroce Our path. Our climb hos been o difficult one. The grodo hos been steep ond tho path rocky. Each problem we faced seemed an unconquerablo crevosso. Each exigency seemed an in­surmountable precipice. But we conquered each crovosso ond surmounted each precipice. Mony times we nearly fell. Some did ond were lost. The rest of us pulled ourselves to­gether, shifted our load ond climbed on. A mountain is not all crevassos ond precipices. It olso possesses green volleys, rippling creeks ond luxurious plateaus. Wc have had mony hoppy ond memorable times during the post yeors. We remember tho lockers we stacked ond the other pronks we indulged in. There were parties we attended ond dances we enjoyed — these ore important phoses of life, too. let us not forget, however, tho! ony successful ascent is the result of teomwork. Who were the members of our team? First there were our teachers. Reluctantly we must admit that they helped. They shared with us their knowlsdgc, their experience ond their timo to equip us for our climb. They prodded us on when we wonted to quit or turn back. Their prods took mony forms, varying from the pressure of the voice to the pressure of the strap. We fought bock with great tenacity, using every weapon ot our disposal ranging from wafer pistols to paper airplanes. Truo, we suffered with each blow but tha proddings ooch pedagogue handed out were both necessory ond effective. They took the brunt of our abuse but still offered help. How could we have ever hopod to finish it without their unceosing assistance? Whot can we soy but thank you? Who else comprised out team? If we were to compile a list. I expect, that it would encompass every person we have ever known. There ore our parents who sacrificed time ond thot oil important money to supply the right atmosphere. There ore the members of the City Council ond the School Board who administered our affairs. Any who propped us up when we storted to slide were certoinly members. Any who encouraged us ond shored our lood when the trail got rough hod their places too. The list of teammates is endless ond so is our remembrance of them. The view from our mountain perch is a panoramic one. The lost seventeen yeors hove been full. A moment ago we glanced down tho side of our moun­tain and surveyed whot we have, tonight, left behind, let us now turn our eyes upward. Whot lies ahead? Whot new adventure con we expect? Clouds have rolled down ond engulfed the mountain psok in o ghastly shroud — the future is unsure. We know, however, thot through those clouds is the summit. This is our goal. This is what lures us on. This makes us attempt the impossible. Each of us knows his goal ond eoch of us struggles to ottoin it. Whot kind of climb can we expect from here? Whot new precipios would we see were those clouds rolled bock? What new crcvosscs must we be prepared to bridge? What new challenges does the future hold? Mony of our future prob­lems ore ot present only speculations. Some, however, foce us even todoy. Mony must learn to co-operate with his fellow mon. We can no longer afford to be hampered by friction resulting from differences in color, roce ond creed. Only united can mon hopo to foce ond conquer tomorrow. Man must find food, clothing ond shelter to satisfy the world's starving, naked and homeless millions. Todoy this problem is acute — tomorrow its solution may be impossible. Mon must discover n»w methods of combatting and con­trolling the numerous crippling and fatal diseases that plague our world. I have mentioned just three problems thot face us today. There must be three million more. What obout the future? What new terrors will hove to be faced? To us falls the task of coming to grips with these prob­lems. They ore ours to foce, ours to deal with, ond ours to solve. Can we conquer this mountain or will life defeat us? Wo hove come one-fourth of the way — con we finish the climb? Perhops you feel thot those probloms do not concern us. Perhaps you feel that they are remote. You realise thot the problems ore critical ond solutions must bo found; but it's up to tomorrow's loaders to deol with them, let's stop ond look ot some facts. We hove been attending school for twelve yeors. By the time we graduato this year, we will be in a select group. We will be the 60 per cent that survived the the climb. As wo leovo the l. C. I. we enter the world, ond within a fow short years assume its leadership. These then ore our problems. The future is only as sure os we ore resourceful, let us hope, for the world's soke, that we are capable of facing the challenge. I spoke earlier of the people to whom we are indebted. Theso people hove made on investment. We have only one way of repaying thot debt and thot is by succeeding. Only when we have fulfilled our potential, only when we hove scaled our mountain, only when we hove reached the peak, planted our flag and ottoined our goal, con we consider ourselves debt-free. Robert Joseph Bob is one of our cnorgotic hockey players who is presently playing with the Lethbridge Sugar Kings. After finishing high school, ho plans to enter cither on American college for Business Administration or join the R.C.M.P. ANDERSON, Bonnie Joyce Bonnie, secretary of the Students' Council, con usually be found at Parson's Hardware, where she works part-time. A valuable mem­ber of her church choir, Bonnie plons to attend the U. of A. next year in the Education Focully. ANDERSON, Bruce Thomas An enthusiastic worker in the L.C.I., Bruce is the President of the Junior Red Cross and is active in the De­bating Club. Other interests in­clude Chemistry and Young Sol­diers. Next ycar he's off to Ed­monton for Honors Chemistry. APPELHOF, Jacob Dean Although church basketball takes a lot of Jake's time, he still enjoys skating ond swimming. Jake's fu­ture plans ore os yet undecided but he hopes to work in a bank or to troin as a lob. Technician ot the Research Station. ARNOLD, Judith Margaret Judy is a popular girl with o smilo for everyone. Outside school, fig­ure skating with the Lethbridge fig­ure Skating Club, and skiing occupy Judy's time. ATWOOD, Karen Koren, one of our Commercial girls, is olwoys ready with a friendly smile for everyone. She is very active in church activities and has a port-timo job at the Fish and Chip Shoppe.
