The ability to decide — to mako up your mind — to quit straddling — to choose wisely and cour­ageously under any circumstances — is unquestionably one of the earmarks of greatness in anyone. It means the ability to choose between the wise and the foolish, between wasting time and using it wisely, between being safe and unsafe, the good and the bad, the beautifiul and the ugly. It is in a large measure a possible test whether a person is educated, regardless of the number of years spont in school. Once the great Lord Melbourne, then Primo Minister of England, asked a young man named Dis­raeli, what he would like to be. Disraeli boldly replied, "Prime Minister of England." Few people in world history present a more remarkable illustration of attaining a goal than Disraoli. The process of learning in school extends to all of us the opportunity to develop our minds so that wo can ascribe to the aforementioned ability. As students of our present-day school system wo can vis­ualize you as standing at the glorious steps of opportunity which you can climb without too much diffi­culty if only you will assimilate the knowledge which is available to you. The teachers of Hamilton Junior High School have assisted you in your journey up the stairs of learning and also have helped to pave the way for all to become "educated". O. am Grade Nine Banquet The Grade Nine Banquet for Hamilton Junior High School was hold at the Civic Sports Centre on Friday, June 5, 1964, with nearly 240 teachers guests and students attending. The banquet began at 6:30 p.m., with Bill Goodman, our president, acting as chairman. After Karen Compton said grace, evoryone sat down to a deliciously prepared meal of fried chicken. Following Heather Bedwell's Toast to the Queen, Brian Dcrksen proposed a Toast to tho School Board and Administrators, which was responded to by Mr. A. C. Anderson. The Toast to the Teachers was proposed by Bill Roycroft and responded to by Mr. C. L. Harvey. The Valedictory was ably given by Sandra Hunt. Best wishes for tho Grade Nines wero extended by Dr. D. F. McPherson, president of the Hamilton Homo and School Association. Ken Wong then out­lined the Class History. Mr. W. Bowns, who was introduced by his son Laurie, pointed out to us tho satisfaction one rccoivcs by putting that "little extra" into our efforts, and stressed the importance of aiming high in setting our life's goals. The Grade Nines wero welcomed to the L.C.I. by Mr. Ted Aoki. Mr. G. C. Miller, the principal, then said fairwell to tho Grade Nines and wished them well in their de­partmental examinations which were soon to bo written.Address To The Graduating Class Mr. Chairman, Honored Guests, Teochers ond Students? What do you students want out of life? A car, a good job, friends, time for fun and living, and education. Probably all those things and probably in about that order — so sot your goal high — hitch your wagon to a star and givo it all you've got, and thon — just "a little extra". That "little extra" sometimes means that we hove some unpleasant duties to perform before we reach our goal — but the sooner we get at these dutios and the harder we work at thorn, the sooner we roach the goal beyond. I mentioned in my opening remarks amongst the things you want from life, was "friends". You wont very much to bo liked, and the people you wan! to like also wont very much to be liked. Wanting isn't enough, you have to come up with "that little extra", and act and show these other people that you like them, and then, and only then, does that feoling start to be returned. I will say right now that friendship and having good friends is one of the high­est awards you can ever obtain! So work at being friend­ly — givo it "that little extra". Next I mentioned — a car, a good job, time for fun ond living, and on education, but — the order of those things should be rearranged, and should be — on educa­tion, a good job, a car, and finally time for fun ond liv­ing. Why do I rearrange these? It's simplol You will remember that already I spoke of friends in the number one spot, and then comes education. When you gel a good education, and this means university or specialized troining in a particular field, the good job, then the car, ond finally time for fun and living follow along naturally. University and specialized training means, of course, putting out "that little extra". Specialized training means, of course, to the young lady, possibly a nursing course, and to the young man a course in welding or motor mechanics. Don't and I repeat DON'T quit school just because you are old enough and because you con get a job ond then that car you wont, or all those dresses you wont. Why? Because tho level of employment you start out at will very seldom get much highor. Your earnings will probably re­main in the S200.00 to $300.00 per month range, and the car and tho other things you wont will bo hard to come by. Surveys hove shown this and they hove also shown that once in a great while one of this group is lucky and reaches the $500.00 per month brocket, but only once in a while. These some surveys have shown that the person with uni- versity or specialized training usually starts at $500.00 per month, then goes to $800.00, $1000.00. $1500.00 and $2000.00 per month, and in some with large corpora­tions $10,000.00 ond more per month. The first group live in homes of about $12,000.00 and the second in homes of $25,000.00 or more. A vast difference you will agree — and well worth "that little extra". Now let's get back to today and what is facing you. School, homework, studies, exams, ond tho small chores you do at homo. "THAT LITTLE EXTRA" still applies, so start to form this habit of doing "a little extra" right now if you don't already have it. The "LITTLE EXTRA" you do in school, or on your home­work, your studios, will come bock os a reword in the form of passing with better grades ond possibly one or more of tho scholarships that are available. Form this habit NOW, of doing "THAT LITTLE EXTRA" and eventually when you reach the business world you will get promotions over someone with the same education or specialized troining, but who has NOT developed this habit. So in closing, lot mo leave you this thought if you want FRIENDS, AN EDUCATION. A GOOD JOB. A CAR, AND TIME FOR FUN AND LIVING, don't follow the crowd, set your goal high, hitch your wagon to a star, and DO THAT LITTLE EXTRA. W. In our first enfronce. we played the part of a subordinate orienting ourselves with the school, odopting to the new system of class changing ond looking up at the senior classes. Although we were not too conscious of what we were doing, the democrotic meons by which we elected our executives was introduaed to Ul. Since we hod become a little more intimate with our school, enthusiosm be­come evident in such school activities os Houseleogue, the Operetto. the Concert and Track ond field. This entrance was a relatively cosy one. Then come our final big entrance, we became the stars, the seniors. However, a new obstacle loomed into view, the dreaded "departmentals". But to soothe ond to build up to this impocf, we were given dances ond skating parties. Tho "departmcnfols" olso provided on excuse for the low sale of tickets on our behalf. Now. we moke our lost exit to proceed to ploy o more difficult part. We are indeed grateful to the teachers for the knowlodgo, for tho potience. for the understanding, for the graciousness which they hove shown us. We deport with mixed feelings: sod to leave Homilton ond hoppy in anticipation of greoter things to come. P o g o Tw o Valedictory Honored Guests, Mr. Miller, Mr. Harvey. Teachers, ond Members of the Groduoting Class: Tonight is the climax of our years in Homilton. We have arrived this for on a seemingly never-ending rood — the rood of education, which wo hove yet not fully tra­versed. Homilton has given us a list of inestimable bene­fits. If has given us new friends, mony new activities, o better outlook on life, ond above all, knowledge from books. We have been learning ever since wc wore born, but we first started to apply what we learned when wc entered grade one. Since then we hove been os o tree, growing. As we grow older, we became maturcr, gained a broader ond newer outlook on life, and reached for newer and better things the main one of which wos education. It will not be long until we ore entering our chosen life's work, but there will still be a continual need for more ond more education. Wc are commencing a new phase of our life, but wo will always bo looking ahead to tho goals in the future, which will be ours to conquer. Wc cannot conquor education all alone, for whore would wc be without all our hard-working ond diligent foachors who have worked with us so for to get us where wo oro now. MCRLCY HART Mea&btrsfclp Hamilton Home and School Association One of the major objects of a Home and School Association is to foster co-operation between parents and teachers in the training and guidance of children. To further this objective, parents wore given an opportunity at the beginning of the 1963-64 school year to visit the teachers in their rooms and become acquainted with them. Another objective is to give parents an understanding of the school and its work. Here we had help from various members of the teaching staff — Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Guidance and Counselling, and Opportunity Classes. Our thanks are extended to those teach­ers who took part in these programmes throughout the year. In December, 1963, the Christmas Concert, presented by the teachers and students, was an enjoyable substitute for a general meeting. Education Week in March, 1964, gave the parents another opportunity to visit classrooms and teachers and further discuss the work that their son or daughter was doing. Although at times the executive was disappointed with the small atten- adnee of parents and teachers at some of the meetings, we feel that this has been a successful year. A donation of money was made to the Librarian to purchase books he felt were needed. A further donation was made to the school to be used in whatever way it would be most useful. At the close of another school year the Home and School Association would like to express thanks to Mr. Miller and Mr. Harvey for their assistance and co-operation throughout the year. Our congratulations go out to the teachers and students for their successes this year: may they continue in the future. PATERSON. Q.C., ll.D. Gilbert C. Paterson was o school teacher turned lawyer, but he nevor lost his love and enthusiasm for his first calling. He was always a champion in the furtherance of education in Lethbridge and Southern Alberto. There are three structures of education that stand os monuments to tho efforts of Dr. Paterson in Lethbridge today. He played a leading role in establishing the Dorothy Gooder School for Retarded Children. The dedication and naming of Gilbert Paterson Elementary and Junior High School was Lethbridge's way of saying thank you for his outstanding work in education. Dr. Paterson was tho driving force as a school trustee who initiated, encouraged and fostered tho Lethbridge Junior College idea info reality. This college was tho first of its kind in Canada. Dr. Paterson was tho type of person who worked hard and long once he sot out to achieve a goal. Ho was born in 5toynor, Ontario, on October 21st, 189.1. In 1913, ho came west and enrolled in the Calgary Normal School. In 1920, he enrolled in the faculty of Low with the University of Alberta, graduating os a Gold Medalist, and came to practice low in Lethbridge in 1923. He became the first secretary-treasurer of the Lethbridge School Division No. 7. In 1935, Dr. Paterson switched his interests to the Lethbridge Public School Board os a Trustee, which he served continuously until his retirement in 1961. Gilbert C. Paterson passed away on April 11th, 1964. after a lengthy illness.
