Such a statement may apply to us all at some time or another. There is always the time when we are tempted to take the line of least resistance but the easy way out of the situation does not provide any reward. Perseverance is the most important stepping stone to success. Without perseverance great plans and dreams are never fulfilled. History is filled with examples of perseverance, that have changed the course of mankind. Had cer­tain individuals net held firmly to their convictions, our world would be far different than it is today. What if: Columbus had become discouraged and returned to Spain? Thomas Edison had failed to persevere in the development of the electric light? Henry Ford hod lost heart and had given up on the horseless carriage? The Wright Brothers had not tried to perfect a flying machine? Samuel Rubens had become frus­trated with his experiments in perfecting his battery? So, too, must all students persevere and complete their educational training. School is not easy and remember the old proverb, "Toil is the sire of success." Please remember that life accepts no excuses. In dealing with the problem of excuses school people are sometimes considered rather "hard-boiled". A stu­dent may think he has a perfectly good alibi or a sound reason. But teachers ore trying to do more than prepare young people to make grades in school; they are trying to prepare them to make the grade in life. If you think you are beaten, you are; if you think you dare not, you won't; if you like to win, but don't think you can, it's almost a cinch you won't. Life's bottles don't always go to the stronger or faster man, but sooner or later the man who wins is the fellow who thinks he can. Finally, our thanks to Mr. Carlson and Mr. Springman and all who helped to make this a wonderful yearbook. a Valedictory Mr. Chairman, Mr. Miller. Mr. Harvey, honored guests, teachers and fellow students: It is my privilege to be the Valedictorian on this memorable evening, the climax of our junior high school years. The *jlurc lies ahead — shrouded in a veil of uncertainty. As this veil lifts, the world will see us striving to fulfill our hopes and dreoms. Some will trip and lose sight of those dreams, perhaps never to envision them again. Others will keep trying, reaching upward when they fall, never giving up even when the odds may be against them. These will find success — at least in terms of self-satisfaction and respect from associates. It is the effort put forth that is of greatest importance. No one wants the symbols of success to come easily. These will not bring happiness and personal fulfilment. We must set goals for ourselves — worthy goals — odd some faith, a lot of diligence and perseverance and do everything wo possibly can to attain these goals. Such is the formula for that sought for, fought for, possibly elusive "thing", success. Here we are now before tho veil lifts, wondering what will become of us. No doubt the teachers arc wonder­ing. too. Thoy contribute a lot to our future for we certainly need their guidance. Nevertheless, the bulk of the burden rests on our shoulders as we will soon find out if we do not realize it already. Wc ore the masters of our own destiny, let us remember this when we are discouraged, when wc are down or when we feel we are doomed to suffer constant failuro. let us each find our star on that distant horizon—made up of our own goals, ideals, hopes—our own dreamt. Ed. kThe Qualities That Make Success and Happiness Address to the Grade Nine Graduating Class by Mr. D. J. Higgins By the year 1975 whon you will bo in your early 20s, man of that era is seen os o complete extrovert, satis­fied with his work, but unhappy if he is cost on his own resources. He will lack both political interest and spirit­ual strength. While technically competent, he will hove lost self-reliance. He will be unable to make decisions. He will be increasingly dependent on government for guidance. In this condition, man will vigorously pursue happiness without finding it. While gaining information, he will lose understanding. In 1964, Dr. Kenneth McFarland, then chief economist for the General Motors Corporation, met with a group of America's top business and scientific leaders. Their quest was to find what wos the greatest threat facing this era today. For three days they discussed the matter behind locked doors. They discorded the atomic bomb; they discorded bacteriological warfare; they discorded communism - and all the other isms, and their answer wos this — ''The greatest danger facing America today is the fact that we are fostering the idea that mon is not responsible for his own economic wolfarc nor morally responsible for his own conduct/' Today we ore guilty of adopting the attitude that the world owes us a living — that we ore entitled to happiness — and it's beginning to look like the odvocotes of this kind of thinking are right! Well, the world does NOT owe us a living — the world docs NOT owe us happiness—if it owes us anything at all it is tho oppor­tunity to moke a living and the pursuit of happiness, not happiness itself. We entered this world involuntarily. We inherited it os previous generations hove made if — be that good or bad. The lot to chongo it for the better falls on your shoulders. You ore the architects of the future. Tho idea of working for results seems to have become old fashioned. Equality in its original and true meaning is a cry for equal opportunity. It has become twisted to mean equal results. Today men tend to choose their careers and professions based upon the strength of the union in demanding results. Rugged groupism is replac­ing rugged individualism! Automation has replaced sweat. Judgment is being replaced by computerized decision mak­ing. You are in school to learn facts — to develop your individual thinking power. Few of you will use algebra and trigonometry — so what good is if? It will develop your thinking power. One thing concerns me about your social studies (that we used to call history) —• when my daughter Pat comes home and tells me whot sho learned in History I realize that when I was going to school the same things wero current events! John Glenn (the American astronaut) said "facts, in­ventiveness and possession of knowledge arc good, but unprincipled and unguided use of the power of knowledge could be ruthless. There must be guidelines for us to follow." Are we squares? Aren't people strictly "square" to be talking this way about moral standards ond spiritual standards? Isn't this rather a time to forget all that — to livo if up, to look for kicks, and to live for today? There is only one way that I can answer this — and that is to look back to the rise and foil of other great civilizations. When we do that, we find that ideals — far from being impractical arc tho very "stuff" of sur­vival. The lack of them has been the architect of their collapse. Every great society which came into boing and long endured did so on the basis of convictions ond beliefs so strong that they lifted the individuals above the mob ond caused them to live (and to die if necessary!) for some aim or purpose nobler and better than them­selves. President John F. Kennedy said, shortly before his death "I cannot counsel you about what subjects to study or what vocoation to follow. But whatever you do, you would be well advised to practice stern discipline and vigorous, unremitting effort. For high qualities and great achievement are not merely matters of chance or birth. They ore the product of long and disciplined foil." A positive attitude should be cultivated — not the kind I showed my own father! One time I went homo ond said "Dad, I think I'm going to fail my Easter exams." He said "son, you must be more positive than that!" I replied, "Okay Dad, I'm positive I'm going to fail my Easter exams." Get your education. It is a light load to carry on your back. The man who knows how will always hove a job. but the man who knows why will always be his boss. I was not a brilliant student — I often wished they gave a mark for courage — I'd hove gotten on H just for taking my report card home! I can recall Pat bring­ing home a report card that was something less than acceptable — but she was clever — she said "Here's my report cord Dad — and one of yours I found in the attic!" Attitude ond persistence ore basic quality require­ments. Read all the greatest books written on success ond happinoss since the dawn of recorded history and you will find that after education and mastery of the fundamentals the remainder consists almost entirely of the proper attitude. Persistence is a quality that will bring you success — no matter what yardstick you personally use to measure success. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Attitude and persistence alone arc uppermost! You will pay for happiness whether you attain it or not. Many people hove the mistaken belief that the cost con bo avoided. You must be prepared to give of yourself. Life is a continual decision of choice ond you will make many decisions in your time that will affect your future happiness and success. Don't bog down in mediocrity. Scorn mediocrity! Don't be satisfied with less than your best. listen to experience, but by all means think for yourself — don't just go along with the crowd. If I were to ask you how many opinions you have that ore strictly your own, you would possibly be puzzled to answor because you hove probably inherited your relig­ion; you have probably inherited your politics; you have probably inherited a great many of tho most common ideas that pass through your mind each day. Chances ore thot you hove never stopped to question a single one and get a fair answer from the exercise of the muscles of your own mind. You must look to the habit of thinking. The doors will be closed in June for the last time by Mr. Miller and Mr. Harvey as they are leaving Hamilton. Mr. Miller was appointed as the first principal of Hamilton Junior High School when it was established in 1951. Mr. Harvey came to teach in Hamilton in 1954 and he became vice-principal in 1961. Under Mr. Miller's inspiration and guidance many traditions that we now take for granted were developed in Hamilton and though the list is long, we would be remiss not to mention a few: the Armistice Day program, the Christmas pag­eant. the school Orchestra, the Operetta and the plays, plus the numerous clubs that operate during the noon hour and after school. The students arc proud of their school and will always look back with pride to the years spent at Hamilton. It is sincerely wished that each of these two fine, dedicated men, Mr. Miller and Mr. Harvey, will enjoy good health, good friends and good fortune in all future endeavors. Act os an individual. Styles and fashions are set by far loss than 1 % of the populace. The rest of us are followers. The rest of us are conformists. When your teachers get annoyed with you it will usually be because you arc doing less than your best. They don't berate you because they enjoy if—your indi­vidual success or failure will not directly affect them. Bucky Harris, manager of the Washington Senators once said "I don't get mad at bad boll players — only with good boll players that ploy bad ball." Finally one lost quality — and in my judgment the most important. If it were within my power to instill in any person the quality that would contribute to success and happiness it would be that of appreciation — appre­ciation for parents, for teachers, for friends — for our fellow man —- for if you hove appreciation it would necessarily follow that you would hove those other by­product qualities of appreciation such os compassion, hu­mility, honor, love ond understanding, tolerance ond good cheer. As you complete this milestone of your life of junior high school and embark on your new one of senior high school, include in your wardrobe of qualities somo of those I hove mentioned. Though we were undefeoted in seasonal and semi- fnol play, we wero evicted from our throne two gomes to one in the flnols. During the seoson the Hornets plcyod five exhibition games. We come up victorious four out of five. They posted victories over the Grads, Teachers, Tober ond Medicine Hot while losing only to o Commercial Men's leogue feom. Members of the team were.
