Essig first came to Mississippi State in 1959 as a member of the Animal and Dairy Science Department, focusing on ruminant animal nutrition, specifically beef cattle. He received both his Bachelor\u27s and Master\u27s degrees from the University of Arkansas, in 1953 and 1956, respectively, and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1959. During his Mississippi State career, Essig authored than 200 research articles.
