Referential Meaning Translation Distortion in The Great Gatsby English-Indonesian Novel. A Thesis: English Letters Department, Faculty of Letters and Humanities, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta 2016.The aim of this research is identifying the cause of referential meaning distortion in translation and the translation procedure. The object of this research is a novel entitled The Great Gatsby that was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.The writer uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data have been analyzed using the criteria of good translation proposed by Mildred Larson and translation procedure that was proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet.As the result of this research, the writer found 14 cases referential meaning distortion in word and phrase level. The first 9 cases referential meaning distortions are caused by meaning inaccuracy, 3 cases caused by wrong word choice or equivalence, and the rest caused by unnaturalness.x, 37 hlm. ;ilus
