Noun shift and its equivalence in the land of five towers

The main concern of this research is translation study; that is theory of translation shift which was postulated by J.C. Catford. This research focuses on one of theory of shift, class shift, in a popular Indonesian novel, Negeri 5 Menara and its translation The land of Five Towers. the objectives of this research are: (1) to observe the kind of noun shift in Bahasa Indonesia intoEnglish Translation, (2) to assess the shift using equivalence theory of Mona Baker. This research uses qualitative descriptive method to reach the objectives of the research. He employs himself to collect data: by reading the novel and its translated sentence by sentence, marking the nouns which are shifted in translation novel, classifying, selecting, and analyzing the selected data according to the relevant theories: Translation Shift and Equivalence. Based on the research finding, there are five kind of noun shift in Bahasa Indonesia into English Translation in the novel; Noun to Verb, Noun to Adjective, Noun to Pronoun, Noun to Preposition, and Noun to Adverb. The research concludes that the noun to verb shift is mostly occurred in the research. Most shifts have equivalence in varied level.
