A problem of equivalence in the translation of Indonesian cultural terms into English in Edensor novel

In this research, the writer discusses about the equivalence which is one of the main problem in the translation of cultural terms. The objective of the research is to know the reason why the equivalence becomes the main problem for the translator in the translation of cultural terms. The writer uses descriptive analysis technique by applying qualitative research. The writer herself is as the subject by reading the novel and its translation, underlining and classifying the cultural terms that found from both novels, and analyzing the collected data that are related to the subject of the research. This study was based on some theories proposed by Newmark (1988), Molina and Albir (2002), and Venuti (1995). The theory of cultural category proposed by Newmark was used to investigate categories of cultural terms, theory of techniques of translation proposed by Molina and Albir to identify techniques of translation applied by the translator in achieving the equivalence of cultural terms, and theory of ideology of translation proposed by Venuti to analyze the tendency of the use of ideology of translation, foreignization and domestication, by referring back to the theory proposed by Molina and Albir on techniques of translation. The results of the study showed that there were five categories of cultural terms identified in the novel which are translated using direct loanwords, word to phrase and word to clause. There were 10 techniques of translation applied by the translator in the translations of the cultural terms including the applications of single and double techniques of translation. In addition to foreignization and domestication ideologies of translation, it was also revealed that there was also partial foreignization and partial domestication ideology of translation. It was called partial foreignization and partial domestication since some cultural terms were translated through combinations of two different techniques of translation; combinations of source-language-oriented and target-language-oriented techniques of translation.
