I I I - 6 - university centers of Arabic studies in the United States, had been selected as the location for the establishment of a Center for Arabic Language Study. This was not only a significant achievement for the University on the basis of prestige in the academic community but represented a real gain in the University's over-all objectives. This achievement had impressed the Government representatives. The Chairman went on to say, however, that it was not enough to obtain additional Government funds but that the University must conduct a private program of fund raising, and presented to the Board a working paper which outlined the needs for such fund raising and some guidelines for the conduct of the proposed fund raising campaign, which had been prepared at the request of the Executive Committee. Mr. Cole, in speaking to the proposal, noted that Congress might become more restricted as to making funds available to the American University in Cairo and that relations between the United States and the U.A.R. were not propitious for increased Congressional contribu­tions. He noted that Mr. Barco and Mr. Thoron had recently spent a week in Cairo reviewing the whole financial situation and that if the University's grant from AID remained the same as last year, we might anticipate a total deficit of $670,000. It was essential to conduct a campaign both in Congress for the pound fund as well as a private program for dollar fund raising. Mr. Barco noted that, even if increased Governmental aid were obtained, the University would still require about $200,000 in dollars a year in addition. Hopefully this could be raised in terms of $ ~.O OO .O OO from private sources, as had been proposed by the Executive Commit tee at its last meeting
