I I - 6 - '(Ever since her first acquaintance with The American University In C~iro. she was interested In the work of Or. McClenahan in the School of Oriental Studies, now the Center of Arabfe Studies. The purpose of the School of Oriental Studies was to give Americans a greater understanding of the Middle East through intensive study of the Arable language, Arab culture, and Islamlcs. Today, this Center, still located In the building which she and her mother donated in 1935. has become not only the leading institution training Americans in the Arabic language outside the United States, but also one of the most important Institutes for the study of Islamic Art and Architecture in the world. 'The Board of Trustees was deeply touched to learn that Miss Gillespie had made a bequest of two shares of her resident estate to The American University In Cairo to further the work of the Center of Arabic Studies. The Board wishes to register the appreciation for this gift and for the long-time friendship of this truly remarkable daughter of Pennsylvania~ Report of the Vice Chairman Mr. Barco said that his continuing contacts In Washington both with the Executive branch and Congress revealed a most positive attitude towards the University within the U.S. Government. It would appear that the UniversityJs ability to survive without dilutIon of Its American character has Increased its importance In the view of Washington. This attitude helped produce an accelerated Issuance of dollar and pound grants for this academic year. Furthermore, there seemed to be a general view that following the reestablishment of diplomatic relations the pound endowment fund would be vigorousl
