The gift of $1.0,000 from the Arabian American Oil Co. to provide special facilities for teaching Arabic, including mechanical equipment, is also significant of their >>ermanent interest in the S.O.S. The U.S. Foreign Operations Administration (Point IV) has likewise been negotiating for special orientation courses for its personnel coming to the Arab countries. The post-war growth of interest in the Near and Middle East by universities in the United States is also opening doors for us. Columbia, Chicago and Rice Institute (Texas) have already indicated some joint efforts that could be undertaken. Other possible contacts are Princeton, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Johns Hopkins and California, all of which are develop-ing post-graduate programs on the Near East. These are just a few of the indications of AUC's growing position as an international university serving an increasingly important area in unique and effective ways. They all prove that the infant institution of the 3.920's has grown up and is now expected to share mature responsibilities with other educational and learned groups in the Fear. East and elsewhere. Referring to the Deans' reports, certain natters should be emphasized: (A) Hill house was opened as a well-equipped men's dormitory and although some difficulties with the contractors had delayed the completion of all details and the settlement of their bills, these have now been resolved and the accounts paid. Some minor details and corrections will be carried out by ourselves. It is a great satisfaction at long last to have a proper dormitory for our men students and unmarried male staff members. As we gain experience in dormitory administration, it is to be hoped that the maximum values will be derived. Again we are grateful to the generous donors, the ten nieces and nephews of Dr. and Mrs. Wm. Bancroft Hill. A complete financial statement will be supplied as soon as the final bills are paid. (B) The first year of the Social Research Center involved the setting up of a staff and equipment, and the starting of research. As explained in Mr. Rink's report, three research projects were approved for groups outside the Center, as well as one he carried on himself. Dr. Dorey worked to build up a reference library and files and the construction of a fact book about Cairo. The reports on research done are attached as appendices to the Director's report. With a new permanent director able to give his undivided attention to the Center, it is hoped that there will be a considerable intensification of the type of studies so well begun. At the suggestion of the Ford Foundation a plan for a considerably enlarged center to serve the Near Eastern area as a whole was drawn up and has been approved by them subject to certain commitments to be made by the Trustees. This matter will be referred to later. (C) In the report of the Faculty of Education, Dean Boktor calls attention (1) to the great need for a model school as an institution to demonstrate methods taught in the courses, and (2) to the demand for advanced courses leading to a Master's degree. Perhaps the revival of Lincoln School under local auspices and affiliated with the University could be achieved and help serve these Purposes. The matter should be studied. (II) Associated with the University's achievements, there are inevitably some difficulties and problems which need to be mentioned and perhaps studied in some detail in order to arrive at satisfactory solutions. There is space here only to list them and comment briefly. (A) A very decided lack of esprit de corps in the staff and serious tensions came to my attention in the first few weeks of my stay, and increased as the year progressed. In four of the five departments there were serious rifts between the Deans and the members of their permanent staffs. In one case it was so serious that the resignation of the staff member had to be requested. In other cases, the tension impaired smooth functioning, and on several occasions I had to intervene in person. In two departments the students were aroused and petitions and anonymous multigraphed complaints were circulated. Four short-term members resigned before the end of their three-year term o
