-~- I ties. We must be the hub of American Scholarship in the United Arab Republic. Above all, we must emphasize quality in our work and a flexible, energetic willingness to tackJe new programs. Within the framework of such precepts the following program developments seem to fit. First, we must improve and expand what we now do. That means, for example, that the Social Research Center should enlarge its staff, increase the range of its work and the level of its capacities. Next fall we seek to add from six to eight new middle range and senior staff members and we are actively discussing ways of adding to our program of social research, demographic and economic research. The program of the Center for Arabic Studies should continue to grow as rapidly as possible. Its graduatelprogram is coming along very well. We now must concentrate on enriching and enlarg- Ing its traditional program of language teaching. We are negotiating a number of relationships with American universities under which we will bring to the American University in Cairo graduates and some undergraduates for specialized Arabic studies. A summer institute program to give specialized training is planned to begin this summer. It will be a pilot project for 30 Portland State College students who will come to Cairo for six weeks. Development of several aspects of the Arabic studies program depends on the availability of hostel faci lities. Since these are e I now in sight,we can press ahead. In the Division of Public Services we are preparing our first evening secretarial program. We believe this is a field in which we should expand in future years. The Division has begun again t
