VI. PERSCNNEL Several new members joined the staff wad made special contributions. P: r. Rumford came tc us from the headmastership of the British School at Suez to teach English and to act as chairman of the department. Being an experienced teacher he proved particularly helpful with the twc examination classes cf the Egyptian Section; he was extremely cooperative in a variety of ways. Mr. Edmondson, with a good experience in the journalistic field, joined us to take charge of the department of Journalism as well as to teach. As he made his adjustments tc our situation, he gave firm direction to the department. It is unfortunate that we could not have profited for a longer period from the experience of a mature, practiced person, but he offered his resignation in the spring because of poor health adjustment to Egypt. From America two other teachers came by appointment from the Philadelphia office - Mr. Shepard and Yr. Mabbs. Both have done well for the first year in assuming responsibilities and endeavoring to adjust, especially the former. Lachenzie, who had j oine f us two years ago after being mustered out of the British Forces, leaving before the end of the year because of breakdown of health, returned; he had indicated his desire to be with us again. I was eager to have the advantage of his ye=ars of special experience in the teaching of English; he had been much admired by his students and liked by his colleagues. It seemed wise to ask him as an older man to take charge of the Hostel. Matters did not work out well. He came tc the crnclusion that he had lost his zest for teaching and his ability to control situations. Certainly he was unable to keep a firm hand in the hostel; he was extremely kind and concerned for the welfare of the boys, but he disliked to discipline and was constantly disappointed in their failure to respond to advice. Thus he asked to be released from contract at the end of the year. Several part time teachers assisted with courses in the Faculty - Mr. Barracks began the teaching of an Economics course and one in Composition, but returned to America at the end of the first quarter, ostensibly because of the health of his mother. Miss Sheila Engert replaced him. When Mr. Horton with-drew at the end of the first semester, Mr. Williams took over his courses, but encountered some difficulty in winning the attention of the students. firs. Speers conducted the course in Junior Philosophy. Help with Sociology was given by Dr. Salah el Abd and Mr. Yahia Darwish, both specialists with the Ministry of Social Affairs and both having had training in America. Although the pro-spects are good so that part-time teaching can be gre a tly reduced next year, yet we shall noel to continue seeking aid for the higher courses of our major subjects, and it is good to draw to us such specialists as Dr. Salah and Mr. Darwish, just as we were fortunate once again to have the aid of Dr. Maurice Wahba cf the Faculty of Science for a course in Chemistry. These men give a prestige to their courses besides helping us to have viewpoints on the standards of our students compared to those of other institutions hereabouts
