Mr. Nichols. remarks that the Director of Education plans to send two or three more students to us. Hitherto he has been sending students to Beirut for their scientific training, but seems inclined now to have them.at Cairo. Of one other scholarship student special note should be made. He completed the work of Sixth Form last year and desired to continue his studies,..but.felt that his finances did not permit as his father was out..of.work. We awarded him a scholar-ship as we deemed him a worthy candidate.. He continued working.long hours throughout the year at the Gezirah Sporting Club; at the same time he made an excellent scholastic record. rarely have we.had.students who were finding and seizing the opportunity for self-help while attending classes. We rejoice in the determination of this student.. One other Sophomore, an Egyptian Moslem, reports keeping the accounts of three or four traders, thereby earning enough to pay his fees. One of the girls of the Senior Class was employed as a governess for a family living in one of the more distant suburbs; she.did excellent scholastic work while carrying this burden. An effort was made to give to those receiving. grant-in-aid special assignments of duties in order to counter the idea that such grunt-in aid was a gift requiring no obligations. To those. receiving one to four. pound grants-- especially in the lower classes - it is difficult to offer appropriate tasks. To the older boys, receiving., substantial grants, work was assigned in the library - caring for the charging. desk. during the lunch hour, keeping .the periodical refer-ence room in order, replacing. books on the shelves, drawing out cards from the catalogue under the direction of the cataloguer, writing.Arabic cards; other students were given tasks, such as helping teachers..in.preparation of class notes, assisting the physical training instructor,. attending to..cīosing the doors in Assembly, taking attendance in Assembly. Students.accepted.their tasks readily enough and, in many cases, performed them regularly and well. One boy asked to be given some task other than shutting the assembly door because that seemed not quite dignified; strangely enough this boy is one most active in the Scouts. Class Attendance:-Controi.of absences and tardinesses has recurringly presented problems. With the cooperation of Rizq Effendi the attendance of the boys in the econdary section was kept well in hand again.this year.. The students of the Matriculation section were carefully watched during the year for their attend-- ance record; the control was not as effective as in the case..of the Secondary section because of the practice of excuses being .given at the .Registrar's office. Senior College attendance was the most difficult tc, gauge and to control. During the first semester the practice of reporting absences daily broke down completely; in fact, there was almost no reporting of absence at any time.. The matter came to a head at the end of the first semester when two repeating Sophomores were droppd because of inability. to carry their work; although teachers gave poor attendance as one of the charges, there was little evidence in the records to support that particular charge. During. the second semester a drive was made to secure complete records regarding attendance daily. Each teacher of the.upper classes was re-quested to put outside his door early in the period a slip registering tardinesses and absences. These were collected by a servant during the period and given to the Dean's Secretary who compiled the records. Students wishing to have an absence or a tardiness excused presented written excuses to the Acting Dean or the Super-visor of Women. The intent was to hold students to a limit of three unexcused absences for a course. These uetsures for controlling absences called forth edit-orial comment in the Caravan; the attitude of some of the Senior College students, especially the coeds, seemed to be that they should not be bothered to furnish excuses for absences.
