Request was received from Cairo for four short-term teachers and the CommitteV is happy to report that it was possible to appoint four unusually well-qualified men and to send them to Cairo in August 1947. This is the first normal contingent of short-term teachers since the be-ginning of the war. 2. Mr Harrell F. Beck, one of the four short-term instructors sent in 1945 (a'L1 of whom were theological students and therefore released b their draft a boards for service in Cairo), by Dr. Badeau recommended his appointment as a permanent member e of rt he hsecond to staff, pr. Adams in the School of Oriental Studies. Mr. Beck has ac-cepted this appointment. 3. The exchange of Dr. F. C. Hood of the University of Illinois and Dr. Arnir Boktor for the year 1946-47 was completed to the great satis-faction and benefit of both institutions. The exchange was made possible through the Division of :International Exchange of Persons of the De-partment of State. Dr. Doktor returned to Cairo in August 1947, and Dr. Hood has resumed his duties in Illinois. 4. The Council 1:anutes for 1946-47 were reviewed by the Committee and are on file in the Philadelphia office. The Minutes reported the following resolution of appreciation sent to Syracuse University for the service of Dr. Spencer during 1945-46 which was presented in plaque form by Dr. Badeau at Syracuse ih..Febhuary►; 1947: Frorp the Council of The American University at Cairo To Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York Greetings: Cn behalf the administration, faculty and student body of the American University at Cairo, the University Council hereby records its gratitude for the services rendered to the American University by the School of Journalism of Syracuse University in the person of its Dean, Dr. M. Lyle Spencer. During his visit to Cairo in 1937, Dr. Spencer planned and inaugurated the first instruction in journalism in the Arab world, and in the present year of his visiting professorship he has laid the basis for new and significant developments in this department of teaching. The services thus rendered have been of great value both to the American University at Cairo and to the Arabic press of the Middle East.
