REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION To THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES For 1936-37 Meetings held during the year: April 22, 1937 at the Harvard Club, New York City, and October 28, 1937 at the University Club, New York City. Dr. Arthur Jeffery met with the Committee and told them in some detail of the work that he has been doing for the past twenty years on a criticism of the Koran. He showed very clearly the effect which this work would have on the thinking of the whole Mohammedan world. He explained that he was practically the only man left in the world who was working on this problem and he felt a responsibility for seeing it through before he died. He explained that he had received offers from an American University and from three Lnglish universities which would enable him to devote practically all of his time to this important work. He felt that he owed it to the missionr-ary cause and to himself to accept one of these offers and asked that the Committee accept his resignation as a member of the faculty of the American University at Cairo. It was the consensus of opinion of the Committee that Dr. Jeffery's resignation should be accepted with regret and that the details in regard to this resignation should be left in the hands of President Watson. Suggestions for Dr. Jeffery's successor include the following names: Dr. Kraemer who is serving partly udder the Dutch government and partly under a mission board in Java; Pastor Neilsen, a Dane, who is at present connected with the School of Oriental Studies in Jerusalem; Dwight Donaldson, a Presby-terian missionary in Persia; L. E. Browne, an English missionary in India; T. Ci yler Young, a Presbyterian Minister in Iran; Dr. Reausch of the Lutheran Mission in East Africa; Dr. Sweetmen and Dr. Bevan-Jones of India. 1937-38: The following faculty appointments were made for the college year Dr. John S. Phelan, professor of Sociology at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., as a special lecturer in the Department of Education for the year 1937-38. Mr. H. L. Sensemann, member of the English Department of Columbia University, as teacher of English in the government course of the College of Arts and Sciences for a period of three years, commencing with September 1937. Mr. Russell G. Tuttle of Windsor, Conn., as short term instructor in physical education and mathematics. Dean M. Lyle Spencer, Dean of the bchool of Journalism of Syracuse University, spent the second semester of 1936-37 in the College making a study of the possibilities for a course in Journalism. His report recommended that an American trained in the field of journalism and publicity be added to the College staff commencing with September 1937. He emphasized the fact that the publicity work done by this man would dout Less result in increased enroll-ment both in the College and in the course in journalism. Mr. Leslie A. Nichols, Jr. who has been Dr. Spencer's associate for the last five years, was appointed assistant professor in journalism for a period of three years
