years of this course. Fbr the year 1939--1+0 of the sixty-five students enrolled in Forms I, II, IV, forty were Moslems. After reviewing carefully the opinions of the Trustees as expressed to Dr. Watson personally or by letter, and after a thorough discussion of the subject, the Committee passed three specific resolutions. The Committee 2resents the recommendation that action taken by them be confirmed: THAT the Committee on Education finds nothing inconsistent with the Christian policy of the American University at Cairo in acceding to the Egyptian govern-ment's request that where fifteen or more students of a given religion are to be found in a given class of the Government Secondary course, these students shall be given instruction in the religion of their fathers, provided that the University retains its authority to select the teacher or teachers in those courses of religion. THAT the Council in Egypt be given authority to carry on negotiations with the Egyptian Government and to formulate a policy and plan for teaching the re-ligious courses mentioned above, safeguarding the Christian objectives of the University with particular reference to the points mentioned by the Committee on Education. THAT a special memorandum, prepared by Dr. Watson on the subject of the Egyptian Government's request to the College department concerning the teach-ing of religion to various student groups in the government course, be sub-mitted to the Trustees in order that each Trustee may have an opportunity to register with the Committee on Education his opinion on the subject as prompt-ly as possible. In June 1940 Dr. Watson was invited by the Foreign Missions Conference of North America to become its Executive Secretary. The Committee on Education de-voted considerable time investigating this offer and advising Dr. Watson concern-ing it. The following resolution was unanimously adopted by the Committee and subsequently approved by circular action of the entire membership of the Board: WHEREAS a delegation from the Foreign Missions Conference of N.A. appeared before the Committee on Education on June 28, 1940 in New York City and urged that Dr. Watson be granted leave of absence as President of the American Uni-versity at Cairo to become General Secretary of the Foreign Missions Confer-ence of N.A., an organization of over 100 boards of foreign missions in the United States and Canada; WHEREAS the Committee on Education has given careful consideration to what ap-pear to be the needs of this Committee in the light of the world crisis, to the opportunity before the American University at Cairo in these critical days; and last but by no means least, to Dr. Watson and his desire to make every year count for the most in some great Christian enterprise. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of Trustees record their deep sympathy with the Foreign Mis-sions Conference of N.A. in their extremely important work and in their pur-pose to give the work new advance, but regret that they cannot think that th
