This report was received, dis-cussed, and approved. (See Appendix D.) 59. REPORT OF In presenting his report for the year THE PRESIDENT 1920-21 as President of the University, Dr. Watson emphasized the following points: He pointed out the special significance attached to the record of this initial year of the launching of the University, because of the following considerations: the political situation creates enlarged opportunity for such an educational project; the students are drawn from social levels that represent the leadership of the country; the religious program that was successfully carried out represents a great achievement in view of the large percentage of Moslems enrolled; the public favor which the University enjoys has great significance; the locaticn and character of the University equipment constitutes an even greater asset than had been supposed; finally, the successful financial record, and the meeting of all obligations to the current budget, constitute a ground for genuine thanksgiving. Dr. Watson also commented upon the splendid loyalty and efficiency of the University staff under the leadership of Dr. McClenahan. He also outlined the negotiations that had taken place with the Cairo Study Center and the Missions supporting it, with a view to affiliation with the Univer-sity. He presented the problems of the future under the following headings: Curriculum. We have a free hand, but what should be the content of the curriculum? Departmental Developments. Should we proceed successively or simultaneously in the development of the departments er Schools of Agriculture, Teachers' Training, Religious Training, and the University Extension? Residential Department. What provision can be made for the extremely pressing appeals for a boarding department? Faculty. What shall be the order of prior-ity in building up the faculty, and where can qualified men be found? Buildings. That is the most effective use that can be made of the extremely valuable site that the University has in Cairo? 60. REPORT Dr. M. G. Kyle, Chairman of the Committee, present- OF COIVMMMIITTEE ON ed the report. This report was received, discussed EDUCATION and approved (See Appendix E), and the following recommendations were adopted: a. That the President of the University be requested to study the question of the most desirable educational developments to be sought for the University, in particular: (a) The development of a resident-ial department. (b) The further needs of the Department of Arts and Sciences. (c) The requirements for agricultural training. (d) The requirements 2)r teacher training. (e) The possibilities of the School of Oriental Studies, in relation to a proposed Christian School of Religion. b. That owing to the peculiar conditions necessarily existing at the launching of the University, and in the initial stages of its development, the strict application of the rules laid down in the By-Laws for the government of the University and the administration of its Council and Faculty, be relaxed until the next meeting of the Board of Trustees, and that the President report to the Trustees at that time the method of procedure that has been followed, and that might be recommended.
