The President and Secretary in consultation were instructed to prepare a statement announcing the resignation, such statement to be re-leased simultaneously in Cairo and Philadelphia. The Committee would now report that the resignation was announced by the Chairman of the Board at the Cairo dinner in New York, Janua.'y n, 1953; at the same time releases were sent to Cairo newspapers, Mani expressions of regret have been received from inside and outside University circ.ies in America and in Egypt, The Order of the Nile was bestowed on Dr. Badeau by the Egyptian government be-fore he left Cairo in June 1953 in appreciation of his services. At the same meeting a year ago Dr. Cleland responded to the Board's in-vitation and later consented to serve as Acting President during 1953-54. His arrival in Cairo toward the end of September brought new courage and higher morale to the staff. With his guidance and the help of older and newer members of the faculty, things should go smoothly and satisfactorily during the present academic year. Recommendations to the Board of Trustees: l Faculty appointments: a) THAT Newton Dean Smith, Jr., (M.A., University of Minnesota) be appointed instructor of English and social sciences in The American University at Cairo for a period of three years beginning September 1953 at the revised salary and allowances, b) THAT John Jaquelin Ambler, V, (St. John's College, B.A.) be appointed in-structor of mathematics in The American University at Cairo for a period of three years beginning September 1953 at the revised salary and allow-ances. c) THAT Donald Arthur Byington (A.B,, Syracuse University) be appointed in-structor of journalism in The American University at Cairo for a period of three years beginning September 1553 at the revised salary and allow-ances. d) THAT Samuel E. Bertsche (a graduate of Washburn University, also M.S.M., Union Theological Seminary) be appointed instructor of English in The American University at Cairo for a period of two years beginning Septem-ber 1953 on special contract offered by Dean Howard. 2. Fulbright appointments: a) THAT the Fulbright appointment of H. Paul Castleberry (Ph.D. in political science, University of Chicago) be confirmed as visiting professor in political science at The American University at Cairo during 1953-54. s
