JEFFERY: In view of the departure of Dr. Arthur and Mrs. Jeffery on December 29, 1937, for America where Dr. Jeffery is to take up the duties of his new position at Columbia University, Council voted to place upon its records the following minute: For slightly over 16 years the Rev. Arthur Jeffery, B.D, , M.A., Ph.D. has been connected with the American University at Cairo. During this period he gave himself freely to building up the efficiency and the reputation of the School of Oriental Studies as a center both for the training of missionaries to Moslems and for scholarly research in Islamic history, theology, literature and culture. His linguistic gifts and his broad and detailed acquaintance with Islamic sources drew to the School, as students, collaborators and visitors, Orientalists from all over the Western world. During his stay with the University, he endeared himself to his associates by his personal friendliness, his deeply religious spirit and his public Christian messages. His departure is recognized as a great loss to the University and especially to the School of Oriental Studies to which he was attached. His call to Columbia as Professor of Semitic Languages represents however a greater opportunity for continuing his Koranic research work and we therefore reconcile ourselves to his going by the thought that it gives promise of making possible an outstanding service to the Kingdom of God through the completion of his great opus, the critical study of the Koran. We extend to him and his wife the University’s best wishes, and hold a grateful memory of the years that they spent with us. 1762. TRUSTEES’ MEETING: Dr. Watson read the report of the recent meeting. Council noted especially: a) The death of Dr. W.I. Chamberlain. b) The assignment of three "Trustees’ Scholarships" to the Department of Education. c) The recommendation that the following employees be bonded: Acting Bursar §5000. Vice* Bursar 5000. Cashier 2500. Assistant Cashier 2500. Farm Manager 500. and the cost to be added to the Cairo budget, commencing July 1, 1938. Dr. Watson was asked to try once again to try to avoid the expense of bonding permanent men. (See ,fl734) d) The report of the Committee on Spiritual Resources. Dr. Watson stated that copies of this are being sent to the permanent staff. 1763. KING FAROIJK’S MARRIAGE GIFT: Dr. Watson reported that the College had collected L.E. 24.135 from students and staff, which was being sent to the fund under the direction of Dr. Ali Pasha Ibrahim. It is to be noted that 72^ of the students and 92^ of staff made contributions. Council approved a recommendation that the Trustees be asked to send cable greetings to H.M.
