5i REPORT OF THE DEAN OF THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IT CAIRO Cairo, Egypt. June 24, 1932 President C. R. Watson, Herrnhut, Germany. Dear President Watson: Permit me to present herewith some reports of my duties for the third year of my appointment as Dean of the University. The first six months were spent in the United States, four of them being devoted to cooperation with the Philadelphia Office and the Board of Trust-ees. The following will indicate i4y ctivities during the past six months. ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE COUNCIL: The duties of the Council were not many, being almost entirely confined to the regular meetings. ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL STUDIES: This has called for a considerable amount of time, both in the survey of conditions of the Staff, the curriculum, methods, results, student body, etc., and the possibility of en-larged and more efficient service for the school; the latter may involve increased registration, f- cilities for Turkish and Persian and perhaps other languages as well as Arabic, the development of the department of Islamics, r-nd possibly the introduction of a department of Christian Apologetics. THE FINANCE COMMITTEE: The situation at home, the adjustment of the Budget, etc., have called for frequent meetings of this Committee, where such delicate questions as arose called for the care and experience of us all. THE S. O. S. BUILDING: The Committee on the new building has met frequently, almost every day . My share has not been so much in the architectural problems as the observance and suggestion as to what might result in the creation of an atmosphere favorable to such a study center, in equipment, furnishing, etc. THE DIVISION OF EXTENSION: Practically every day there has been co-operation with Mr. Cleland, the Director, and tit regular weekly meetings of the Staff. The duties this year have been somewhat less than previously, but have been intensely interesting and provided a delightful cooperation with others. THE COLLEGE: Nay cooperation has been largely consultative and per-sonal, but not official, and as relating, the College to the other units of the University and community. I have carried one class, the Fourth Government, in its studies of "Problems of Faith and Conduct". Une of the interesting and diff-icult duties, in ivew of the situation this spring was to secure a distinguished Moslem speaker, - which we did. Quite from an extra-mural view point, and as a result of many con-tacts with out constituency and others, I would mention the following consider-ations by those directly responsible for the conduct of the College: (a) Should any effort be made toward controlling the enrollment, so as to make it :+bore Egyptian than it seems to be tending to become
