The Virgin City and Lower Gunlock reservoirs in the Dixie project should be provided with adequate recreation facilities for local use. The recreation facilities at the larger reservoir (Virgin City) should be designed for considerable State, and some national, use as well. Its location near Zion National Park makes it suitable for supplementing the scenic attractions of the park. Many of the visitors to the park would use it for picnicking, camping, swimming, fishing, and boating. Recreation Demands in the Southern California Area The State of California has recognized the fact that the expected large future population growth, especially in Southern California, will present an ever-increasing need for additional outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The State Park Commission feels that the Colorado River is second only to the Sacramento River as a source of water recreation opportunities for Californians. Proposals have been made for acquiring or leasing land from the Federal Government and establishing three major parks and recreation areas along the Colorado River in Southern California. In conjunction with Southern California's present water-oriented recreation and the State's proposed Castaic, Perris, and Cedar Springs Reservoirs, these parks would help to meet the pressing needs for such recreation.
