further modify the natural character of the stream which created the Grand Canyon and has been continuing to wear down and deepen the canyon. The natural forces which carry silt and debris through the canyon would be lost and much of this material would be deposited in and along the sides of the river bed. Opportunities would no longer exist to enjoy the unique recreation values of exploring the area by river, through the rapids and falls, an experience that has attracted wide interest. The reservoir as presently planned would flood a portion of Havasu Creek, which is within Grand Canyon National Park and is a spring-fed stream of unusual beauty, unique in that part of the country. Access to both the Bridge Canyon and Marble Canyon impoundments will be severely restricted by steep canyon walls and adjacent rugged topography. This will limit total visitor-use potential. The Virgin City and Lower Gunlock reservoirs in the Dixie project should be provided with adequate recreation facilities for local use. The recreation facilities at the larger reservoir (Virgin City) should be designed for considerable State, and some national, use as well. Its location near Zion National Park makes it suitable for supplementing the scenic attractions of the park. Many of the visitors to the park would use it for picnicking, camping, swimming, fishing, and boating. Recreation Demands in the Southern California Area The State of California has recognized the fact that the expected large future population growth, especially in Southern California, will present an ever-increasing need for additional outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The State Park Commission feels that the Colorado River is second only to the Sacramento River as a source of water recreation opportunities for California. Proposals have been made for acquiring or leasing land from the Federal Government and establishing three major parks and recreation areas along the Colorado River in Southern California. In conjunction with Southern California's present water-oriented recreation and the State's proposed Castaic, Perris, and Cedar Springs Reservoirs, these parks would help to meet the pressing needs for such recreation.
