The federal Clean Air Act requires states that did not meet clean air standards through other means to switch to reformulated gasoline, which is expected to reduce ozone. Maine officials planned to switch statewide to reformulated gasoline, but the federal Environmental Protection Agency said the state couldn\u27t require the fuel in the seven counties that meet federal clean air standards. Maine and 13 states north of Virginia have petitioned the federal government asking that entire states be allowed to sell the gas
