Apprendre à comprendre l'écrit. Psycholinguistique et métacognition : l'exemple du CM2

Learning to understand written language. Psycholinguistics and metacognition : the example of 4th year junior school children (10-year olds). In order to become an accomplished reader, the pupil needs to learn to use the written language well beyond the second cycle (6 and 7-year olds ). The basis for this observation can be the evaluations as well as the empirical work set out in the theoretical part of this article where the problems concerning practices are also posed. The 3rd cycle (8,9 and 10-year olds) does not seem to attach the desired importance to strategic reading which is too often born out of successful, or unsuccessful, pieces of self-learning. It is not enough to be a good decoder in order to become a good understander : understanding can be developed as is shown by the American research which is summarized in this paper. As regards French, an explicit teaching of comprehension was put in place in some 4th year junior classes using the contributions of metacognition and applying them to texts where psycho-linguistic operations, which it is recognized play a rôle in understanding (the) written language, have to be brought into play. The effects of this teaching are very clear as regards improving textual understanding. Giving the teaching of comprehension a status by devoting time to it and by working with the pupils on the procedures they use as well as the errors they make could become an objective for the 3rd cycle.Pour devenir un lecteur accompli, l'élève a besoin d'apprendre à utiliser l'écrit bien au delà du cycle 2. Ce constat peut s'appuyer autant sur les évaluations que sur les travaux empiriques présentés dans la partie théorique où sont également posés les problèmes concernant les pratiques. Le cycle 3 ne semble pas donner l'importance souhaitable à la lecture stratégique qui, trop souvent, nait d'auto-apprentissages réussis ou non. Il ne suffit pas d'être bon décodeur pour devenir bon compreneur : la compréhension peut se développer comme le montrent les travaux américains résumés ici. En France, dans des classes de CM2, un enseignement explicite de la compréhension a été mis en place en utilisant les apports de la métacognition et en les appliquant à des textes qui nécessitent de mettre enjeu des opérations psycholinguistiques reconnues jouer un rôle dans la compréhension de l'écrit. Les effets de cet enseignement sont très clairs sur l'amélioration de la compréhension de texte. Donner un statut à l'enseignement de la compréhension, en lui consacrant du temps, en travaillant avec les élèves sur leurs démarches et leurs erreurs, pourrait devenir un objectif pour le cycle 3.Remond Martine, Quet François.
