Flu Ban Futile At Present Time, Anderson States

• City health officer Anderson gives two main reasons why he is not considering another quarantine during the present influenza epidemic: (1) Communities surrounding Spokane are experiencing an increase in the number of cases and (2) travel, specifically to Spokane, can not be stopped, rendering a quarantine ineffective; City commissioner Fleming agrees• Anderson says this regarding the epidemic, “the most serious phase is the shortage of nurses”; he believes the death rate can be reduced if additional nursing help can be given at this time• Today there were 271 new cases of influenza with 7 new cases of pneumonia reported to the health department; the total number of influenza cases now number 7,106; pneumonia 579; and deaths 579• The current influenza cases are said to be more virulent than before• The school board has not yet decided to close the schools but will be meeting again tonight• Anderson is said to be considering options including a modified quarantine, but acknowledges it would cause (economic and health) suffering and privation• Anderson warns public gatherings have contributed to the recent high number of casesNewspaper article1,
