Influenza Wave In City Believed Nearing Crest

• Not all daily reported deaths or cases are “new.” Some date back several days. • Names of the twenty who died recently are printed, along with their ages and addresses. • Policemen misunderstood the closure order for businesses; some thinking that it meant a certain section, others thinking it meant entire city. This led to many complaints to city hall from business owners. • Mayor Mills clarifies: “The order does not include small stores employing not more then two clerks, nor does it include drug stores, restaurants, and hotels, and it applies only to those within the zone. Wholesale establishments also are excluded. Groceries are not affected for the reason that they can open when they please and the government compels them to close at 6 P.M.”• Precautions have been so well implemented and observed in large businesses in Denver that very few of them have a large number of employees sick. Denver Dry Good is an example. They employ over 1,000 people and only 17 were ill yesterday and only 1 case of influenza. The employee with influenza is almost recovered and will return to work on Monday. The same is true with other big department stores. All stores have been immediately sending home any employee with a cold. • All public libraries will be closed until further notice. All books currently checked out should be held until the libraries re-open. No danger of books being carriers of influenza. All books are sterilized when they are returned. • Another precaution: all funerals in cemeteries must now be private. All indoor funerals were made private earlier, with the closure ban, but funerals in cemeteries did not have to be private.
