Closing Order To Be Effective Another Week, Mayor Decides

• Thought that Denver will re-open next Sunday but not this week. • Mayor Mills responds to any potential criticism that a meeting between the county medical society and several other physicians should not take place, since all other meetings are cancelled. Mills: “The doctor is the one upon whom we depend for combating this plague. He is exposed and thru him his family is exposed. Upon him devolves the responsibility for not only combating the malady but curing, if possible, his patients. The doctor is devoted to his profession in this epidemic and already some have paid the price. It is proper that these men should meet, should exchange views and by a general discussion endeavor to frame measures that will not only further prevent the spread of influenza, but definitely check it and cure those afflicted with it. I am confident that out of this meeting will come great good not only to the city but to the state.”• At the meeting of physicians planned for Tuesday, doctors from cities surrounding Denver will be present. Hoped that the exact situation in Denver and the state can be determined. • It was originally predicted that the city would open today but given the lingering presence of influenza in the city, the unfavorable epidemic situation in the state, and the demand of the public that the city be closed a while longer, the decision was made to prolong the closure orders. • Several Denver “jobbing houses” will not send men elsewhere in Colorado, Wyoming, or New Mexico because of the presence of the epidemic. • Decrease in Denver of new cases. On Friday, there were 169 new cases and yesterday there were only 60. For Friday’s report, 100 are said to date back a week or so. Total of 3,325 cases reported to the city of Denver. • Thought that many cases of influenza are going unreported. Doctors are not required to report cases and it is thought that because doctors are working especially long hours, they do not have time or energy to report all cases. • The quarantine at Fort Logan will not be lifted for at least another week, or until there is no more danger at the fort, in the city, or in the state. • Names of the dead, along with ages and addresses are listed.Newspaper article1
