Eleven More Deaths Reported As Epidemic Is Checked In City

• Names, occupation, and address given for the eleven people who died yesterday.• Unanimous enforcement of closure order found last night. • Rooming houses and factories continue to be checked. The rooming houses are also being inspected for sanitary conditions. • Committee issued these special instructions: streets will be sprinkled; police should arrest all those who spit or expel mucus from their nose onto the street or a public area; the streets downtown will be flushed nightly; railway cars’ windows must be kept open to ventilate; hospitals are asked to not take on any surgery cases (unless they are emergencies) and to reserve beds for influenza patients; all nurse exchanges must report to the health department any nurse who refuses to take influenza cases; burning leaves is forbidden; cover nose and mouth with handkerchief when coughing or sneezing. • Hospitals showed many pneumonia patients but few with Spanish influenza as the cause. Several hospitals report no influenza cases or very few. • Dr. Sharpley says that hospitals are being carefully monitored and hopes that influenza will not spread through hospitals. • Precautions are especially strict in hospitals where tuberculosis patients reside. Visitors are not allowed unless it can be determined that they are free of a cold. • It is possible that the nine Denver selective draft boards will suspend until epidemic is over. • Some have suggested that the parks should close but doctors don’t believe that closing the parks is necessary. The open air should prevent disease spreading, even if the parks are crowded. • Orders to send home sick employees were well obeyed yesterday. • Many courts in Denver adjourned, starting yesterday, until the epidemic passed. • Miss Hill, the president of the Grade Teachers’ Association of Denver, told Dr. Sharpley that the teachers are willing to help in any way possible. • Loafing in Union station has been forbidden.
