Comparative epidemiological study of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from food-producing animals, their meat, the environment and personnel of abattoirs and meat processing establishments in Northern Greece

Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile opportunistic pathogen, commensal of the human and animal microflora. However, under favorable conditions, it could become the causative agent of a variety of illnesses, ranging from skin infections and gastroenteritis to pneumonia or even sepsis. S. aureus is globally one of the major pathogens and is considered among the leading causes of food intoxication, due to its enterotoxigenic potential. The ability of S. aureus to survive and thrive in hostile environments contributes to its wide distribution. From both of a Public Health and a Veterinary Clinical Medicine viewpoint, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a source of concern. Multiple drug resistant (MDR) MRSA strains could colonize both humans and animals, increasing the potential for infections that are difficult to treat. Reports of MRSA isolated from production animals and animal foods have become more frequent in recent decades. The direct contact with carrier-animals and the handling or even the consumption of contaminated food of animal origin, have been associated with the transmission of such strains to humans.The purpose of the current dissertation was to study the epidemiology of MRSA in animals destined to be slaughtered, their meat, the environment and the personnel of abattoirs and meat processing establishments, located in Northern Greece. This study was dividend in two parts; in the first part the epidemiology of MRSA was investigated in abattoirs, whereas the second part investigated the epidemiology of MRSA in meat processing establishments.All retrieved samples were tested for the presence of S. aureus, according to the ISO 6888:1-1999 standard. Further analysis was performed using classic microbiological methods (Gram staining, mannitol fermentation and catalase-testing, detection of bound coagulase and protein A), so as to confirm the isolates’ identity. All phenotypically presumptive-positive S. aureus isolates were submitted to PCR tests targeting the coa and nuc genes. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing against 14 antimicrobial agents was performed by the disk diffusion method. The MRSA status of each strain was concluded via PCR detection of mecA or/ and mecC genes. In addition, all S. aureus and MRSA isolates were screened for the carriage of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes (sea, seb, sec, sed, see, seg, seh, sei και sej), as well as the presence of the genes encoding for the Toxic-Shock Syndrome (TSST-1) and the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) proteins. An assay of the biofilm-forming ability of all strains was also performed. Finally, genotypic analysis via spa-typing and Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) were used in combination, so as to reveal the phylogenetic relations among the examined isolates. S. aureus was isolated from 55 (10.1%) out of 547 samples examined from three abattoirs in Northern Greece. The highest S. aureus isolation frequency was observed from samples retrieved from human nasal cavities (17.2%) and tool surfaces (16.1%), followed by pig carcasses (15.5%), small ruminant nasal cavities (15.0%), cattle nasal cavities (7.5%), pig nasal cavities (6.9%), infrastructure surfaces (6.8%), cattle carcasses (5.7%) and small ruminant carcasses (5.0%). Among them, 7 MRSA isolates were identified, indicating a prevalence of 1.3%. All MRSA isolates exhibited resistance against cefoxitin and carried the mecA gene, but not the mecC gene. Two MRSA strains were recovered from the carcasses and one from the nasal cavities of the tested pigs. The rest of MRSA isolates were detected in samples of environmental surfaces of the investigated abattoirs. In terms of different establishments, the highest isolation frequency (31.7%) of S. aureus was noted in abattoir L, followed by abattoir K (14.2%) and then abattoir B (4.2%), respectively. The isolation frequency of MRSA was 2.0%, 1.2% and 0.0%, regarding the abattoir K, the abattoir B and the abattoir L, respectively.The vast majority of S. aureus isolates (96.4%) were found to be resistant towards at least one of the 14 antimicrobials chosen in the context of the antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Furthermore, all MRSA isolates were multi-drug resistant (MDR), exhibiting resistance towards four to seven antibiotic classes. The most frequently observed drug resistance, with respect to S. aureus and MRSA isolates, was against penicillin (89.1% & 100.0%, respectively), followed by ampicillin (74.5% & 100.0%), tetracycline (40.0% & 100.0%), clindamycin (29.1% & 100.0%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (25.5% & 100.0%), erythromycin (23.6% & 71.4%) and tobramycin (23.6% & 14.3%). On the other hand, all isolates were shown to be susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The screening for the presence of genes encoding for staphylococcal (entero)toxins revealed that 60.0% and 50.0% of the S. aureus and MRSA isolates, respectively, carried at least one enterotoxin gene, solely or in combination with others. Most of the enterotoxigenic isolates were carrying sei (75.8%) gene, followed by seg (42.4%), see (21.2%), sed (15.2%), seb (12.1%), sej (6.1%) and sec (3.0 %). All MRSA isolates carried the see (42.9%) or/ and sei (42.9%) genes, solely or in combination with others. No isolate carried the sea or seh genes. Moreover, neither the tsst, nor the lukF-PV gene was caried by any of the retrieved isolates.All examined isolates were found capable of producing biofilms; 43.6% of them possessed strong, 54.5% moderate, and only one isolate (1.8%) showed weak biofilm-formation ability.Two different spa types were detected in the MRSA isolates. Specifically, spa type t011 was detected in three out of seven MRSA isolates, whereas spa type t034 was detected in the rest of the MRSA isolates. Both of the aforementioned spa types are associated with the clonal complex (CC) ST398/ CC398, which is the most prevalent LA-MRSA clone in Europe. On the other hand, the genetic diversity of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates was more profound, according to the results of spa typing. Among MSSA isolates, 19 spa types were obtained, represented by t034, t7947, t337, a newly-detected type (not yet assigned with spa number), t084, t2891, t012, t024, t4038, t005, t011, t120, t209, t306, t542, t564, t589, t620 and t11205, in descending order of occurrence. To the best of our knowledge, some of the above spa types were detected for the first time in Greece. However, one strain was not typeable, based on spa typing. The majority (41/55) of S. aureus isolates were successfully typed by PFGE using the restriction endonuclease SmaI. PFGE profiling suggested a relative broad genetic diversity among the examined isolates. Specifically, 30 distinguishable pulsotypes, grouped in 7 main clusters, were revealed. On the other hand, PFGE profiling revealed the existence of indistinguishable or closely related pulsotypes among the S. aureus strains isolated from distant locations, within the examined geographical region. The circulation of epidemiologic clones within the same abattoir was also noticed in some cases, suggesting the potential cross-contamination. However, the MRSA isolates were not typeable by the above method. This could be attributed to the frequently observed methylation of SmaI restriction sites, in MRSA isolates belonging to the clonal complex CC398.The second part of the current study included the investigation of S. aureus and MRSA epidemiology in two meat processing establishments in Northern Greece. One hundred and sixty samples were collected in total. The prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA was 13.8% and 0.6%, respectively. The highest S. aureus isolation frequency was observed from samples of ground meat products (25.0%), human nasal cavities (25.0%), environmental surfaces (10.1%) and from primal cuts of meat (8.1%). Only one MRSA isolate was identified, originating from a ground meat product (i.e., raw pork sausage).The most frequently observed antimicrobial resistance was against penicillin (68.2%), ampicillin (68.2%), tetracycline (18.2%) and tobramycin (13.6%). The sole MRSA isolate was also characterized as MDR, because of the exhibited resistance against six antimicrobial classes. On the other hand, all isolates were found susceptible against gentamicin, amikacin, erythromycin, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin and fusidic acid.The majority (54.5%) of S. aureus isolates carried at least one enterotoxin gene, whereas no gene encoding for staphylococcal (entero)toxins was detected in the sole MRSA isolate. Most of the enterotoxigenic isolates were carrying seb (40.9%) gene, followed by sed (18.2%) and sei (13.6%). Neither the lukF-PV gene nor any other of the remaining SEs genes were caried by any of the retrieved isolates. However, the tsst gene was detected in two of the S. aureus isolates; one per meat processing establishment investigated.In addition, all examined isolates were found capable of producing biofilms. Among them, only one isolate was characterized as strong biofilm-producer, whereas the remaining isolates were classified as moderate biofilm-producers.Ten different spa types were detected in S. aureus isolates originated from the investigated meat processing establishments. The results of spa typing indicated an average genetic diversity among the S. aureus isolates. The predominant spa types were t084, a novel spa type exclusively associated with the meat processing establishment Z (not yet assigned with spa number) and t091, in descending order of occurrence. The rest of the detected spa types (t012, t197, t499, t774, t891, t899, t1510) were singletons. The sole MRSA isolate (originating from a ground meat product) belonged to spa type t899. To the best of our knowledge, t899 along with some of the aforementioned spa types were detected for the first time in Greece.Based on the results of the current dissertation, the isolation frequency of S. aureus and MRSA in the meat production chain in Greece were deemed relatively moderate and low, respectively. However, the detection of indistinguishable or closely related epidemiological clones at distant geographical locations or even in the environment of the same abattoir, are indicative of the isolates’ transmission potential and suggest that the dissemination of the pathogen in the community is likely to occur. The detection of several virulence factors in the isolated strains and especially among the MRSA isolates, poses additional concerns. Therefore, a thorough implementation of Good Hygiene and Good Manufacturing Practice codes is warranted, so as to mitigate the pathogen’s transmission in the community. The suggested interventions should start from the beginning of the meat production chain, even by redesigning the implemented cleaning and disinfection protocols. Furthermore, any additional preventive measure should be applied, by taking into account the ecology of MRSA. The potential transmission of MRSA between animals and humans, along with the MDR character of the isolates, are considered as major concerns that should be addressed in the context of the One Health Initiative. A more extensive epidemiological surveillance of S. aureus throughout the meat-chain is needed to better understand the pathogen’s dynamics for dissemination in this food sector.Ο χρυσίζων σταφυλόκοκκος (Staphylococcus aureus) είναι ένας ευπροσάρμοστος ευκαιριακός παθογόνος μικροοργανισμός, αποτελεί μέρος της φυσιολογικής μικροχλωρίδας των ανθρώπων και των ζώων, αλλά κάτω από συγκεκριμένες προϋποθέσεις είναι σε θέση να προκαλεί λοιμώξεις με ποικίλες κλινικές εκδηλώσεις, που κυμαίνονται από απλή δερματίτιδα ή γαστρεντερίτιδα μέχρι πνευμονία ή σηψαιμία. Είναι ευρέως διαδεδομένος στο περιβάλλον, διαθέτει την ικανότητά να επιβιώνει και να αναπτύσσεται σε αντίξοες περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες και παράγει πληθώρα τοξινών, κατατάσσοντάς τον μεταξύ των κύριων παθογόνων μικροοργανισμών που είναι ικανοί να προκαλούν τροφοτοξινώσεις, παγκοσμίως. Ιδιαίτερα σοβαρό πρόβλημα για τη Δημόσια Υγεία και την Κτηνιατρική πράξη αποτελούν τα ανθεκτικά στη μεθικιλλίνη στελέχη του (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA), τα οποία αποικίζουν τόσο τους ανθρώπους, όσο και τα ζώα, με ενδεχόμενο πρόκλησης σοβαρών λοιμώξεων που αντιμετωπίζονται δύσκολα λόγω της αντιμικροβιακής αντοχής. Τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, στελέχη του MRSA απομονώνονται όλο και πιο συχνά από τα παραγωγικά ζώα και τα τρόφιμα ζωικής προέλευσης. Υπό το παραπάνω πρίσμα, εγείρεται ανησυχία ως προς τη δυνατότητα μετάδοσης του παθογόνου από τα παραγωγικά ζώα και τα ζωικά τρόφιμα στους ανθρώπους, γεγονός που φαίνεται να σχετίζεται τόσο με την άμεση και στενή επαφή των ανθρώπων με τα ζώα, όσο και με το χειρισμό και την κατανάλωση τροφίμων ζωικής προέλευσης, επιμολυσμένων με τα στελέχη αυτά.Σκοπό της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής αποτέλεσε η μελέτη της επιδημιολογίας του ανθεκτικού στη μεθικιλλίνη χρυσίζοντα σταφυλόκοκκου (MRSA) στα προς σφαγή ζώα και στα σφάγια αυτών, στους εργαζόμενους και στις επιφάνειες του περιβάλλοντος τριών σφαγείων, καθώς επίσης στο κρέας, τα νωπά κρεατοσκευάσματα, τους εργαζόμενους και το περιβάλλον δύο εγκαταστάσεων επεξεργασίας κρέατος της Βόρειας Ελλάδας. Η μελέτη περιλάμβανε δύο σκέλη. Το πρώτο σκέλος αφορούσε στην έρευνα στα σφαγεία και το δεύτερο στις μονάδες επεξεργασίας κρέατος.Τα δείγματα εξετάστηκαν για την παρουσία του S. aureus σύμφωνα με τη μέθοδο ISO 6888:1-1999 και τεχνικές της κλασσικής μικροβιολογίας (χρώση Gram, παραγωγή καταλάσης, ζύμωση μανιτόλης, ανίχνευση της συνδεδεμένης πηκτάσης και της πρωτεΐνης Α). Όλα τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη που πληρούσαν τα φαινοτυπικά χαρακτηριστικά του S. aureus υποβλήθηκαν σε μοριακές εξετάσεις για την ανίχνευση των γονιδίων nuc και coa για την επιβεβαίωση της ταυτότητάς τους. Η αντιμικροβιακή αντοχή των στελεχών S. aureus έναντι 14 αντιμικροβιακών παραγόντων ελέγχθηκε με τη μέθοδο διάχυσης δισκίων αντιβιοτικών σε άγαρ. Για την ταυτοποίηση των MRSA στελεχών πραγματοποιήθηκε μοριακός έλεγχος για την ανίχνευση της παρουσίας των γονιδίων mecA και mecC. Επιπλέον, όλα τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη του S. aureus και του MRSA εξετάσθηκαν για τη φορεία γονιδίων παραγωγής σταφυλοκοκκικών εντεροτοξινών (sea, seb, sec, sed, see, seg, seh, sei και sej), της τοξίνης του συνδρόμου της τοξικής καταπληξίας (Toxic Shock Syndrome-1, TSST-1) και της λευκοκτονίνης Panton Valentine (PVL), καθώς και για την ικανότητα σχηματισμού βιοϋμενίων. Τέλος, εξετάστηκε η γενετική ποικιλομορφία και η φυλογενετική συγγένεια των απομονωθέντων στελεχών μέσω της τυποποίησής τους βάσει του γονιδίου της σταφυλοκοκκικής πρωτεΐνης Α (spa) και των ηλεκτροφορητικών προτύπων τους (pulsotypes), μετά την εφαρμογή ηλεκτροφόρησης σε παλόμενο ηλεκτρικό πεδίο (PFGE). Για το πρώτο ερευνητικό σκέλος της διδακτορικής διατριβής, το οποίο διεξήχθη σε τρία σφαγεία της Β. Ελλάδας, εξετάστηκαν συνολικά 547 δείγματα, στα 55 (10,1%) εκ των οποίων ανιχνεύθηκε ο S. aureus. Η μεγαλύτερη συχνότητα απομόνωσης παρατηρήθηκε στα δείγματα που λήφθηκαν από τη ρινική κοιλότητα των εργαζομένων (17,2%), ακολουθούμενη από τα δείγματα που λήφθηκαν από τις επιφάνειες των εργαλείων σφαγής (16,1%), τα σφάγια των χοίρων (15,5%), τις ρινικές κοιλότητες μικρών μηρυκαστικών (15,0%), βοοειδών (7,5%) και χοίρων (6,9%), τις επιφάνειες των εγκαταστάσεων (6,8%), τα σφάγια βοοειδών (5,7%) και τέλος, τα σφάγια μικρών μηρυκαστικών (5,0%). Ο επιπολασμός του MRSA στις εγκαταστάσεις σφαγής ήταν 1,3%, αφού 7 από τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη χαρακτηρίστηκαν ως MRSA εμφανίζοντας ανθεκτικότητα έναντι της κεφοξιτίνης και φορεία του γονίδιου mecA, ενώ κανένα δεν έφερε το γονίδιο mecC. Δύο από τα παραπάνω στελέχη ανακτήθηκαν από τα σφάγια χοίρων κι ένα από τις ρινικές κοιλότητες χοίρου και τέσσερα από τις περιβαλλοντικές επιφάνειες των σφαγείων. Σε επίπεδο διαφορετικών εγκαταστάσεων, το ποσοστό απομόνωσης στελεχών του S. aureus ανήλθε σε 4,2%, 14,2% και 31,7%, ενώ του MRSA σε 1,2%, 2,0% και 0,0%, για το σφαγείο Β, το σφαγείο Κ και το σφαγείο Λ, αντίστοιχα.Ποσοστό 96,4% των απομονωθέντων στελεχών του S. aureus εμφάνισε ανθεκτικότητα έναντι τουλάχιστον μίας από τις 14 αντιμικροβιακές ουσίες που επιλέχθηκαν. Όλα τα MRSA στελέχη εμφάνισαν αντοχή έναντι της κεφοξιτίνης, ενώ διαπιστώθηκε ο πολυανθεκτικός τους χαρακτήρας με παρατηρούμενη αντοχή σε τέσσερις έως επτά κλάσεις αντιμικροβιακών ουσιών. Τα υψηλότερα ποσοστά αντοχής των στελεχών S. aureus και MRSA αντίστοιχα, παρατηρήθηκαν έναντι της πενικιλλίνης (89,1% & 100,0%), της αμπικιλλίνης (74,5% & 100,0%), της τετρακυκλίνης (40,0% & 100,0%), της κλινδαμυκίνης (29,1% & 100,0%), του συνδυασμού αμοξυκιλλίνης – κλαβουλανικού οξέος (25,5% & 100,0%), της ερυθρομυκίνης (23,6% & 71,4%) και της τομπραμυκίνης (23,6% & 14,3%), ενώ όλα τα στελέχη εμφάνισαν ευαισθησία έναντι του συνδυασμού τριμεθοπρίμης – σουλφαμεθοξαζόλης. Η παρουσία ενός τουλάχιστον γονιδίου παραγωγής σταφυλοκοκκικών εντεροτοξινών, μόνου του ή σε συνδυασμό με άλλα, βρέθηκε στο 60,0% και στο 50,0% των στελεχών του S. aureus και του MRSA, αντίστοιχα. Μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό φορείας διαπιστώθηκε για το γονίδιο sei (75,8%), ακολουθούμενο από τα γονίδια seg (42,4%), see (21,2%), sed (15,2%), seb (12,1%), sej (6,1%) και sec (3,0%). Τα γονίδια sea και seh δεν ανιχνεύθηκαν σε κανένα από τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη του S. aureus, ενώ τα στελέχη MRSA έφεραν τα γονίδια see (42,9%) και sei (42,9%), κατά μόνας ή σε συνδυασμό. Τα αποτελέσματα των μοριακών ελέγχων για την ανίχνευση των γονιδίων tsst και lukF-PV, απέβησαν αρνητικά για όλα τα στελέχη που εξετάστηκαν. Όλα τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη βρέθηκαν ικανά να παράγουν βιοϋμένια. Συγκεκριμένα, το 43,6% από αυτά διέθεταν ισχυρή ικανότητα παραγωγής βιοϋμενίων, το 54,5% μέτρια ικανότητα και μόνο ένα στέλεχος (1,8%) παρουσίασε μικρή ικανότητα παραγωγής βιοϋμενίων. Στο σύνολό τους, τα MRSA στελέχη διέθεταν μέτρια ικανότητα παραγωγής βιοϋμενίων.Η τυποποίηση βάσει του γονιδίου που κωδικοποιεί τη σύνθεση της πρωτεΐνης Α (spa typing) των επτά MRSA που απομονώθηκαν στην παρούσα διατριβή κατέταξε τέσσερα στελέχη στον τύπο t011 και τρία στον t034, οι οποίοι ανήκουν στο κλωνικό σύμπλεγμα ST398/ CC398, που περιλαμβάνει τα στελέχη LΑ-MRSA που απομονώνονται συχνότερα στην Ευρώπη. Από την άλλη μεριά, οι ευαίσθητοι στη μεθικιλλίνη S. aureus (MSSA) επέδειξαν ευρεία γενετική ποικιλομορφία, όντας κατανεμημένοι σε 19 τύπους spa. Στους πιο συχνά εμφανιζόμενους τύπους spa συγκαταλλέονταν, κατά φθίνουσα σειρά, οι t034, t7947, t337, ένας νέος, που ανιχνεύθηκε για πρώτη φορά και οι t084, t2891, t012, t024, t4038, t005, t011, t120, t209, t306, t542, t564, t589, t620, t11205. Απ’ όσο γνωρίζουμε κάποιοι από τους παραπάνω τύπους ανιχνεύθηκαν για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα, ενώ ένα στέλεχος δεν τυποποιήθηκε με βάση την παραπάνω μέθοδο.Η πλειοψηφία (41/55) των στελεχών S. aureus κατέστη εφικτό να τυποποιηθεί με τη μέθοδο PFGE, μετά από την επίδραση της ενδονουκλεάσης περιορισμού SmaI, αναδεικνύοντας μεγάλη γενετική ποικιλομορφία, που χαρακτηρίζονταν από 7 κύρια διακριτά συμπλέγματα, τα οποία περιλάμβαναν 30 διαφορετικά ηλεκτροφορητικά πρότυπα. Παρά ταύτα, η γονοτυπική ανάλυση με τη μέθοδο PFGE αποκάλυψε τη διασπορά όμοιων ή γενετικά πολύ συγγενικών στελεχών S. aureus, που απομονώθηκαν από το σύνολο των εξετασθέντων σφαγείων, στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Βόρειας Ελλάδας, αλλά και σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις και την ύπαρξη επιδημιολογικών κλώνων εντός των εγκαταστάσεων σφαγής ζώων, υποδηλώνοντας την πιθανότητα πρόκλησης διασταυρούμενων επιμολύνσεων. Τα MRSA στελέχη δεν κατέστη εφικτό να τυποποιηθούν με την παραπάνω μέθοδο, λόγω της προκληθείσας μεθυλίωσης στις θέσεις πρόσδεσης της περιοριστικής ενδονουκλεάσης, γεγονός που αναφέρεται συχνά για τα MRSA στελέχη που ανήκουν στο κλωνικό σύμπλεγμα CC398.Κατά το δεύτερο σκέλος της έρευνα, συλλέχθηκαν και εξετάστηκαν 160 δείγματα από δύο εγκαταστάσεις επεξεργασίας κρέατος της Β. Ελλάδας. Ο επιπολασμός του S. aureus και του MRSA ήταν 13,8% και 0,6%. Ο S. aureus ανιχνεύθηκε κατά φθίνουσα σειρά στο 25,0% των παρασκευασμάτων κρέατος, στο 25,0% των εργαζομένων, στο 10,1% των περιβαλλοντικών δειγμάτων και στο 8,1% των δειγμάτων από τεμάχια τυποποιημένου κρέατος (αποστεωμένου ή μη). Το μοναδικό στέλεχος MRSA που απομονώθηκε έφερε το γονίδιο mecA και εντοπίστηκε σε δείγμα που προήλθε από ένα παρασκεύασμα από σύγκοπτο κρέας και συγκεκριμένα από νωπό χοιρινό λουκάνικο.Τα υψηλότερα ποσοστά αντιμικροβιακής αντοχής των απομονωθέντων στελεχών S. aureus από εγκαταστάσεις επεξεργασίας κρέατος, παρατηρήθηκαν έναντι της πενικιλλίνης (68,2%) και της αμπικιλλίνης (68,2%), ακολουθούμενα από αυτά της τετρακυκλίνης (18,2%) και της τομπραμυκίνης (13,6%), με το 68,2% των στελεχών να εμφανίζει αντοχή έναντι τουλάχιστον μίας από τις 14 αντιμικροβιακές ουσίες που εξετάστηκαν. Το στέλεχος MRSA βρέθηκε πολυανθεκτικό, εκδηλώνοντας αντοχή έναντι έξι κλάσεων αντιμικροβιακών παραγόντων, ενώ ήταν το μοναδικό, που εμφάνισε αντοχή στην κεφοξιτίνη. Όλα τα στελέχη βρέθηκαν ευαίσθητα έναντι της γενταμυκίνης, της αμικασίνης, της ερυθρομυκίνης, της κλινδαμυκίνης, της σιπροφλοξασίνης και του φουσιδικού οξέος.Η πλειοψηφία (54,5%) των στελεχών S. aureus που απομονώθηκαν από τις εγκαταστάσεις επεξεργασίας κρέατος έφεραν από ένα έως τρία γονίδια παραγωγής εντεροτοξινών, ενώ στο μοναδικό MRSA στέλεχος δεν ανιχνεύτηκε κανένα γονίδιο παραγωγής τοξινών. Το γονίδιο με τη μεγαλύτερη συχνότητα ανίχνευσης ήταν το seb (40,9%), ακολουθούμενο από το sed (18,2%) και το sei (13,6%). Τα υπόλοιπα γονίδια παραγωγής εντεροτοξινών, όπως και το γονίδιο lukF-PV, δεν ανιχνεύτηκαν σε κανένα από τα απομονωθέντα στελέχη S. aureus. Δύο MSSA στελέχη, ένα από κάθε εγκατάσταση επεξεργασίας κρέατος, έφεραν το γονίδιο παραγωγής της TSST-1.Σημασία για τη δυνητική παθογένεια των απομονωθέντων στελεχών εμφάνισε η ικανότητά τους να παράγουν βιοϋμένια. Όλα τα στελέχη διέθεταν μέτρια ικανότητα παραγωγής βιοϋμενίων, εκτός από ένα
