Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile opportunistic pathogen, commensal of the human and animal microflora. However, under favorable conditions, it could become the causative agent of a variety of illnesses, ranging from skin infections and gastroenteritis to pneumonia or even sepsis. S. aureus is globally one of the major pathogens and is considered among the leading causes of food intoxication, due to its enterotoxigenic potential. The ability of S. aureus to survive and thrive in hostile environments contributes to its wide distribution.
