Salmonella spp. is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens. Human and animal salmonellosis remain a serious global problem, because of the direct economic costs resulting from morbidity and mortality, and, thus, the considerable losses in animal products. Within the species Salmonella enterica there are over 2,500 different serovars, many of which have great veterinary and medical significance, although they differ widely in their host range, within mammals and birds, and in the nature of disease that may cause.
