Erich and Rita Kahn Collection 1786- 1945

This collection holds the papers of members of the Kahn and Loeb families, including Rita Kahn (née Loeb), Karl and Maria Anna Kahn and Emil and Johanna Loeb. The collection's focus is on the immigration of family members, with many official documents as well as educational and professional documents. Among the collection's papers will be found several passports along with other identification papers, letters of reference, educational certificates, ship's passenger lists, some personal correspondence and papers, biographical and genealogical notes, a newspaper clipping and other papers.The following books have been removed to the LBI Library: "Das Gebetbuch der Israeliten" (German and Hebrew, 1934, 1937); "Stunden der Andacht" (German, 1908, 191?); "Hausmittel" by Christoph Jakob Mellin (1786); "Vater ist im Kriege" by Rudolf Presber (1916); "Die Heilige und ihr Narr" by Agnes Guenther (1916).Various textiles that belonged to Johanna Loeb were removed to the LBI Arts and Objects Collection.Johanna (Jeanne) Ury, the daughter of Isaak Ury and his wife Mathilde (née Loeb), was born in Grossblittersdorf in 1886, then part of Germany (now Grosbliederstroff, France). Johanna married Emil Loeb, born in 1881 in Schwegenheim, Germany, the son of Elias Loeb and his wife Regine (née Landmann). Emil and Johanna had a daughter, Rita, born in Saarbrücken, Germany in 1921. In 1935, the family emigrated to Luxembourg, where they lived until 1941, when they immigrated to the United States.Karl (sometimes spelled Carl) Kahn was born in Offenburg, Germany in 1883. He studied at the University of Strassburg and was granted a license to practice dentistry in Germany in 1904. In 1920, he received a doctorate in dentistry from the University of Heidelberg. He married Maria Anna Loeb, daughter of Adolf Loeb and Barbara Elisabetha (née Cahn) in 1912. The couple had a daughter, Else, born in 1915 and a son, Erich, in 1920. In 1938 the family immigrated to the United States. Erich Kahn served in the U.S. Army during World War II.Rita Loeb married Erich Kahn and the couple settled in Teaneck, New Jersey, where Erich Kahn owned a pastry shop. They had two sons. Erich Kahn died in 2007, Rita in 2012.Processeddigitize
