Loewenstein Kahn Family Collection 1912-2009 Bulk: 1939-1940

This collection contains materials relating to Erna Loewenstein née Kahn and her family. It includes correspondence between family members in New York and Bingen am Rhein, Germany during World War Two, as well as various items such as passports, photographs, and other documents.Josef Loewenstein (Löwenstein) and his wife Erna, née Kahn (1900- ) had two children, Warner (Werner) Löwenstein (1928- ) and Ruth Formanek (1923- ), all originally of Ockenheim, Germany. Josef Loewenstein died at some point before 1939. Erna then married Max Nathan of Bingen am Rhein, Germany, son of Moritz and Klara Nathan. Erna and her children were able to leave Germany in 1939.Selma Herz née Loewenstein was Josef Loewenstein's sister; she was married to Hermann Herz. Erna Loewenstein's parents were Julius Kahn (1866- ) and Hilda Kahn (1875- ) née Mayer. They managed to reach New York in 1939. Their four children were Erna (1900- ); Karl Kahn (1903 -); Paula Weis (1907- , married Ernst Weis, 1899- ); and Ernst Kahn (1902- ). All the children were able to escape Germany.In 1951, Karl Kahn married Sidonie (Tony) Kahn née Lindo (1910- ). She was the daughter of Heinrich and Lina Lindo, who perished in the Holocaust.Processeddigitize
