Lewald, Löwenstein, Nachmann and Rothschild Family Collection 1905–1990 Bulk dates: 1920-1946

The Lewald, Löwenstein, Nachmann and Rothschild Family Collection documents the genealogy of these four related families and includes mostly official documents such as passports, birth, marriage and death certificates, as well as personal papers such as family registers and memorial books.The book “Reflections by Jewish survivors from Mannheim; a collection of memoirs by Jewish survivors of Nazi persecution from Mannheim, Germany” (1990), edited by Robert B. Kahn has been separated from the collection and can be found in the library of the Leo Baeck Institute (call number: DS 135 G4 M36 K34).Henry Rothschild was born 1897 in Nordstetten (Horb am Neckar, Germany), and his future wife Betty Eichtersheimer was born 1903 in Mannheim (Germany). They had three children, Alfred, born 1923; Kurt Michael, born 1924; and Netty, born 1929. The family hid at least temporarily in France during the late 1930s and in 1940/1941. Henry Rothschild died in 1941; he was buried in France. In October 1941 the family immigrated to the United States.In the United States, Netty Rothschild married Jack Lowenstein, formerly Gert Jakob Löwenstein, who was born 1927 in Frankfurt am Main as the son of Louis Löwenstein and Elsa Betty Löwenstein née Ziegelstein. Gert Jakob Löwenstein had two siblings: Kurt Emil Moritz Löwenstein (born 1920) and Susi Hilde Löwenstein (born 1912). She married Berthold Nachmann (born 1905). They stayed in France in 1935 and 1936.Berthold Nachmann’s sister, Irma Nachmann (born 1905), married Stefan Lewald (born 1901), and the couple hid during World War II in Paris.
