Günther Loewenthal Collection circa 1900-1987

This collection consists of 137 photographs primarily centered around Günther Loewenthal and his wife Ilse prior to their emigration in 1941, with extensive family photographs represented as well. The photographs date back to circa 1900 and as late as 1987, when the Loewenthals returned to Germany. There are photographs of their friends and family in a variety of settings (urban, rural, at the ocean). There are several photographs from a stay in Bucharest. There are also several pictures of family members shortly after World War II, and pictures from their visit to Mülheim in 1987. A World War II era clipping featuring a photograph of Moskowitz twin children, refugees from Germany, is also in the collection.Günther Loewenthal was born on May 9, 1917, in Berlin (Germany), son of Benno and Hertha Loewenthal. He left Berlin in 1941 for the United States, settling in New York. His parents stayed in Germany and were killed in the Holocaust. Günther Loewenthal married Alice Kox, originally from Mülheim an der Ruhr. The couple visited Berlin and Mülheim in 1987 upon invitations of the respective mayors.
