Erich Offenbacher Collection 1835-1939

This collection contains an assortment of family papers, especially those pertaining to the attorney Josef Offenbacher, his wife Helene Schwarzschild, and their ancestors in the Schwarzschild, Goldschmidt, and Oppenheimer families.In addition to a handful of vital records, there are some materials pertaining to the Offenbacher's refugee period in the Netherlands (1933-1939) and their emigration to the United States (1939). Many materials attest to their involvement in the religious life of Frankfurt am Main, especially in the Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft. Remaining materials demonstrate a tight-knit family life, including correspondence from the noted book dealer Selig Goldschmidt and Emil Schwarzschild, and a scrapbook of Josef Offenbacher's writings and poems delivered at family functions. Some family documents, including four Brautbriefe, date to the mid-19th century, as well as some professional documents like passports for commercial activity.
