The aim of the project 'Relevanz von Umweltindikatoren' as part of the assignments within the field of work 'Umweltqualitaet durch Reduktion und Vermeidung von Schadstoffemissionen', carried out by the Center of Technology Assessment in Baden-Wuerttemberg, was to point out the possibilities and necessities of various options for action within the environmental field. To achieve this, the steps judged as necessary for the realization of an environmentally friendly - therefore sustainable - development at long range as well as the matching systems of indicators have been thoroughly tested. The project was based on the objectives, principles, structures and methods of internationally established studies on environmental- and sustainability indicators. More than 90 indicator systems have been systematically analyzed with regard to their respective approaches and realization. The different concepts of the varying institutions have been critically compared with one another and have been tested with regard to their applicability within a regional frame, in this case Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany). The classification of environmental indicators known as DPSIR system - DRIVER, PRESSURE, STATE/IMPACT, RESPONSE - was applied. The project is an addition to the project 'Indikatoren der Nachhaltigkeit mit den drei Komponenten oekologische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung'. Respecting an environmental point of view, suggestions regarding the conception and the contents of environmental indicators were made to promote a long range environmentally friendly development. These suggestions add up to those already listed in the Center's catalogue.
